A. Hobson & Son Bowie Knife with Sheath

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 593)      

4.75" spearpoint blade.  Silver guard and pommel with bone grip scales.  Ricasso weakly marked "CURRENT/A. HOBSON/SHEFFIELD".  Silver mounted leather scabbard with gilt tooling.

Condition: Good condition.  Blade is bright with some streaking.  Top portion of blade has some pitting, damaging edge.  Grip scales has some darkening, turning a pale cream color.  Solver mountings have a dull luster, with some minor flaking, particularly on pommel.  Scabbard has lost some of its top layer with moderate definition remaining of gilt tooling.

Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 593)      

.45 caliber, 7.5" barrel length, S/N 101166 (ca. 1883).  Left side of the frame marked in 3 lines with patent dates.  Replaced front blade sight and 6 shot fluted cylinder.  Blue finish with one piece smooth walnut grips.  

Condition: This firearm is in good condition with an old re-blue throughout.  Most of the wear to the finish is at the muzzle, left side of the barrel and edges.  The cylinder shows drag marks as well as wear to the edges.  The front sight has been replaced.  The grips are very good to excellent.  He bore is good and mechanically good.

.38 special caliber, 5.5" barrel length, S/N 160957 (ca. 1895).  Left side of the barrel marked "Colt Single Action Army .38 Special."  Left side of the frame marked in 2 lines with patent dates next to rampant Colt logo.  Right side of the barrel marked in single-line Colt Hartford address.  Front blade sight and 6-shot fluted cylinder.  Blue barrel, cylinder, hammer, trigger, back strap and triggerguard.  Case color frame with stag grips.

Condition: This firearm has a replaced barrel and cylinder.  The barrel and cylinder retain some of the bluing with wear to the muzzle and edges.  The case color on the frame is dulling and blending to a patina.  Stag grips are good with minimal nicks and dings.  Bore is good and mechanically good.

Condition: Good.  Some wear to blued finish with most wear appearing on barrel and cylinder.  Some pitting to right side of barrel, with finish taking on a mixed plumb and gunmetal coloration.  Markings are legible with a very weak cartouche.  Action functions normally.  Some wear to grips consistent with age and use.  Bore is slightly gray with some surface rust.  Rifling shows some rounded edges.

Lot of Two Sword Belts

Lot includes one U.S. Model 1851 sword belt and one New York militia sword belt.  Model 1851 belt has applied silver wreath with right-facing eagle beneath thirteen stars.  Rear of plate shows numeral "5" with keeper marked "439".   Tongue appears soldered to plate.  Cast New York belt shows "NY" in Gothic letters surrounded by asymmetrical wreath.  Wide tongue with kepper, each devoid of bench or assembly numbers.

Condition: Fair to good.  Brass has some bronzing with no luster.  Leather is mostly pliable with some stiffening.

Lot of Civil War Camp Items with Attributions

Lot consists of six items carried by soldiers during the American Civil War, including chess set, pocket mirror, compasses, ruler, and a set of bone and wood dominoes.  Ruler is marked "Sergt. W.R. Opdyke. Co F. 11th Regt. N.J. Vol. 1863" on one side, with "Hookers Old DIvision. HANCOCK CORPS." with III Corps badge painted with red I Division colors.  Smaller compass is marked "1865/1865".  Pocket mirror cover carved with VI Corps division badge with numeral "5" along with initials "HLT".  Chess set box carved with shield and wreath with lid carved with "CD" in shield with crossed swords. 

Condition: Good condition overall, some tarnishing to metal items.  Chess set and dominoes are incomplete.

Federal Model 1858/61 Fatigue Cap with Company Letter

Dark blue wool with 5" disk and dark blue welt.  Non-regulation company insignia.  Tarred leather visor with buckled chinstrap attached to body with two eagle buttons.  Leather sweatband with dark brown cotton lining.  Correct single row of machine stitching and buckram crown.  No maker's label.

Condition: Fair condition.  Moderate wear to crown and body with some moth damage.  repair to visor with a missing portion of sweatband.  Some cracking and deformity of visor.  Repair co body shows stitch marks throughout and a nonuniformity of machine stitching.

Lot of Three U.S. Model 1858 and 1862 Canteens

Lot # 46 (Sale Order: 46 of 593)      

Lot consists of three U.S. Model 1858 canteens with jeanwool covers.  Includes two Model 1858 "smooth side" and one Model 1862 "bullseye" pattern, all three with pewter spouts.  One Model 1858 marked on spout "A. Jewett", indicating manufacture by the firm of Alber Jewett & Co. of New York.  Jewett example also features a linen strap with cord stopper retainer.  Model 1862 has illegible markings on pewter spout, which may read "J. HALL  ROHRMAN PHILA", as well as a replacement leather strap with eagle button as well as a replacement chain stopper retainer.  One Model 1858 marked "108/NYV", though these are most likely post-war.

Condition: Fair to good overall.  Some wear and missing fabric to jeanwool covers.  Additional denting and other blemishes present.

National Lancer's Shako with Plume and Black Hot Box

Lot # 48 (Sale Order: 48 of 593)      

Founded in October of 1836 by request of Massachusetts Governor Edward Everett, the National Lancers are one of the oldest existing organized militia units in the United States. Initially organized as an armed escort for the Governor, the National Lancers would serve in the Civil War as part of the Army of the Potomac, seeing action at some of the largest battles in the war.  They also participated in the defense of Boston during the 1863 draft riots, where they prevented rioters from seizing the artillery armory. The Lancers also participated in the Pancho Villa Expedition and were part of the American Expeditionary Force during World War One. After the war they were absorbed by the Massachusetts National Guard, with the ceremonial element being adopted officially into the Organized Massachusetts Militia in 1964.  Today, the Lancers retain their ceremonial duties as well as being activated for search and rescue operations. They also continue to serve in a security role, being activated to provide security to Camp Curtis Guild during the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In Massachusetts, the Lancers are known for their annual recreation of the midnight ride of Paul Revere and William Dawes.

Late 19th-early 20th century. Leather construction with red and blue wool body, yellow facings and brass-rimmed tarred leather visor. Fitted with brass sunburst plate and replacement gold cords.  Interior label marked "J. PAUL MAGNUSSON/17 Pleasant Street/NEWTON CENTER, MASS." Leather band with brass-plated leather chinstrap attached with cavalry insignia buttons. White feather plume.

Comes with black leather case with metal plaque marked "Joseph E. Fraumeni" with address along with initials "A.G.K."  Fraumeni rode with the Lancers for over 40 years, and served as its commanding officer.

Condition: Good. Colors are bright with minimal fading. Some cracking and bubbling of leather along with some wear on chinstrap. Brass has a dull patina with a dull luster. Interior label is legible and in good condition.Additional condition information available upon request.
