Non-Regulation Model 1850 Officer's Sword by Horstmann & Sons

Lot # 529 (Sale Order: 29 of 385)      

32.5" blade with etched panels of military motifs and floral designs. Shagreen and gilt brass wire wrapped handle. Cast brass guard with eagle, backstrap with floral designs. Metal scabbard with brass bands.

Condition: Blade has been lightly cleaned. The etched panels are very sharp and crisp. Handle with nice patina. Scabbard has nice plum color, the drag has few light dents. Overall a very good example of Civil War sword by this famous maker.

Model 1860 Union Naval Officer's Cutlass

Lot # 530 (Sale Order: 30 of 385)      

26" blade length, marked near the guard {anchor} over "P" over G.G. dated 1864. Ames Mfg Company on the reverse. Brass guard with USN. Leather and brass wire-wrapped handle. Leather scabbard with copper rivets. Brass tip and near the throat with brass button.

Condition: The blade has nice and clear markings, some light staining. Guard is excellent. Leather scabbard is very good. Overall excellent example of this Civil War Naval Officers Sword inspected.

34" blade with etched panels of military motifs, cast brass guard with eagle and floral designs. Backstrap with floral designs around the pommel. Metal scabbard with cast brass bands of floral designs. Handle of rayskin and brass wire.

Condition: Excellent overall. The wire has come loose near the pommel. Blade has dark gray look with some light staining. Metal scabbard with nice aged look.

7.25" spear point single-edge blade. Marked along the false edge Joseph Rodgers Cutlers to his Majesties, Sheffield England . Leather scabbard with German silver tip and throat. German silver guard checkered handle.

Provenance: From the Estate of Art Gerber, Tell City, Indiana

Condition: Blade still retains the original polished finish, very minute staining. The leather scabbard is excellent. Overall excellent.

Lot of 2 consisting of 1 Confederate Cavalry button measuring 22.5mm with lined "C" and plain background with border. The opposite side is plain with no maker's marks. The second button is a Confederate Artillery button measuring 22.7mm with lined "A." The opposite side is marked in circular pattern "Superior Quality."

Condition: Both of the buttons are in very good condition overall with sharp markings. Displaying a mustard patina.

Lot of 2 Civil War buttons consisting of 1 Confederate script Infantry button measuring 22mm. This is a 2-part button and marked with lined "I" in circular motion on the opposite "S. Isaacs Campbell & Co London 71 Jerymyn St." The second button is a South Carolina State seal button measuring 18mm. Back of the button is marked in circle "Hortsmann & Allen N.Y."

Condition: Both of the buttons are in very good condition with sharp and crisp markings.

15" seat, front and rear cantles decorated with round-head tacks. Unmarked wood stirrups with covers tooled in a star motif. Underside padded with stuffed blue and white-stripped ticking material. Includes blue wool girth.

Condition: Fair overall. Some cracking and crazing of leather with some loss of tacks. Padding shows some staining with use. Some fraying on girth.

Martini Henry MkIV 1 Rifle

.577/.450, 33.25" barrel secured by 2 clamping bands, S/N 17771. Blued finish, smooth walnut stock. Receiver with weak markings that read ENFIELD / 1887 / {crown}{broad arrow} / IV. / I. Retains long-range leaf rear sight, ramped front sight, slotted cleaning rod, saber bayonet lug on upper band, sling swivels.

Condition: Good as refinished and reconditioned. Retains some of the applied blue, markings on metal weak from polishing, markings in wood weak from sanding. Mechanically functional, good bore is dirty and lightly pitted. Stock worn with numerous dings and mars.

British Pattern 1859 India Service Enfield "Short Rifle"

Lot # 538 (Sale Order: 38 of 385)      

.65 caliber, 33" barrel secured by two clamping bands, no S/N. Blue finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked 1860 / TOWER forward of hammer and with a small {CROWN}/{broad arrow}, the usual British {crown} / VR is present at the tail of the lock. Stock with WO / {broad arrow} War Office roundel that reads TOWER LONDON 1860. Stock additionally with a {BROAD ARROW} / I / 1862 India Service storekeeper's mark. Fixed V-notch rear sight, front sight/socket bayonet lug, upper sling swivel present with toe swivel missing, full-length ramrod. After the Sepoy rebellion, the British military adopted a policy of supplying the native troops in their service with arms that were one or two technological steps back from those used by front line British troops. In 1858 a smoothbore version of the Enfield was adopted for issue to the Indian troops and the following year a slightly improved variant with a thicker barrel was adopted. These guns were nominally .656 caliber but were smoothbore rather than rifled, although from casual examination they appeared to be standard Enfield pattern arms. These native troops arms are not regularly seen for sale in the United States.

Condition: Very good. Retains no finish with a mostly smooth plum patina with some light to moderate pitting, mostly at the breech. Clear markings, mechanically functional, good bore that is is dirty and oxidized. Stock with scattered bumps and dings and clear markigns.

Condition: Overall it needs a good cleaning. It is covered with storage crud, underneath it has some original finish. Just untouched and attic dirty. Bore is good and will clean to better.

** US Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle W/Bayonet

Lot # 541 (Sale Order: 41 of 385)      

.45-70 caliber, 32.5" barrel, S/N has three digits that are legible 111; however, this is a later receiver with rounded shoulders. Buffington rear barrel sight. Has a 63-style hammer. More than likely Bannerman or another surplus company assembled the rifle.

Condition: The stock has been cleaned. Metal is mostly brown. Bore is very good to excellent. Comes with a bayonet. Overall good.

.45-70 caliber, 32.5" barrel, S/N 51898, small V P and {eagle} barrel proofs. Early style breechblock with eagle and crossed arrows. Model 1879 rear barrel sight with slotted screws. Walnut stock. Comes with a correct bayonet.

Condition: Bore is bright and shiny, nice rifle that saw arsenal updates. Overall very good.

Condition: All metal has nice even patina brown. Stock is very good with remnants of two readable cartouche, one ESA, SWP. Stock has nice sharp lines. Overall very good example of a Model 1868 Rifle.

U.S Springfield Trapdoor Model 1873 Rifle

.45-70 caliber, 32.5", S/N 14400. Lockplate with 1873 markings, correct early breechblock with eagle and crossed arrows, with large V P {eagle}. Correct early rear stepped base sight, sloted screws, long wrist stock.

Condition: Nice condition early 73 Springfield rifle, the barrel was probably an early change made by the arsenal, as the rifle flows with a nice even look. Remnants of an ESA cartouche and a fine firing proof behind the triggerguard.

** Lithgow British Enfield Mk. III Rifle with Bayonet and Austrian Police Markings

Lot # 547 (Sale Order: 47 of 385)      

.303 British caliber, 25" barrel, S/N 71793. Blue finish, walnut stocks, 1919 date. Top of barrel flat marked "Osterr Gendarmerie." Top of receiver and stock marked with Austrian proof mark and "2nd M.D." Stock also marked "CMF, 2 M.D." Since most of Austria's guns had been confiscated during the war, British SMLE's were given to the police to get them up and running. Hence, the Austrian police markings. Wilkinson 1907 dated bayonet with scabbard and frog

Condition: Good to very good condition with a dark bore. The bore still has cosmolene present and will clean to better condition. The wood furniture has had a high gloss finish added over many dings and scratches. This is an old timer with an interesting history.
