Barnett Commercial Enfield Artillery Carbine

Lot # 442 (Sale Order: 42 of 314)

.577 caliber, 22.75" barrel secured by two clamping barrel bands, no S/N. Blued and color case hardened finish, brass furniture, hardwood stock. Lock marked with a two-line sans-serif stamp BARNETT / LONDON.  Stock with BARNETT / GUNMAKERS / LONDON three line oval cartouche. Single Birmingham black powder proof and 25 gauge mark on breech. Three-leaf rear sight, fixed front sight, sling swivels, jag head ramrod. These commercial copies of the Pattern 1853 Artillery Carbine were produced in the latter half of the 19th century, primarily as trade guns by Barnett, who sold them to whoever was willing to buy these light, handy musketoons. They were made without the saber bayonet lug of the military version and the sans-serif lock marking is typical of the Barnett lock mark found on 1870s and 1880s era percussion trade muskets. This variant of the Enfield artillery carbine was not imported during the American Civil War.

Condition: Very good. Barrel with traces of blue, showing scattered surface oxidation. Clear markings, mechanically functional, very good bore. Stock with light handling marks.

Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket

Lot # 443 (Sale Order: 43 of 314)

.58 caliber, 39.25" barrel retained by three clamping barrel bands, no S/N. Blued finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked TOWER / 1861 forward of the hammer and with the British crown to the rear. Standard Birmingham commercial proof, view and definitive proof marks, with two 24 gauge caliber markings, indicating .58 caliber. An additional S.W. inspection is present at the breech as well. This mark is normally associated with Enfield that bear the Sinclair, Hamilton & Company inspection mark of a {crown} / SH / G# on the top of the comb, forward of the buttplate tang. In this case stock has been sanded and that inspection mark is not present. Top of nocksform marked with a fluer-de-lis maker's mark. Matching assembly marks on barrel, breech plug and and in barrel channel of stock. Retains the correct pattern rear sight, front sight/bayonet lug, sling swivels and an original ramrod. Includes an old snap cap, attached to the lower sling swivel.

Condition: Good. Retains some of the added brown finish, no original finish present. Barrel cleaned with light markings, mechanically functional, good bore that is moderated oxidized and lightly pitted the last 4"-6" nearest the muzzle. The lock appears to be a replacement, as the fit is poor and the lock is not assembly marked to the balance of the gun. Stock sanded with no visible markings, leaving some of the metal proud of the wood. A crack is present, running from the rear lock bolt to the barrel channel. There is also some minor wood loss under the lock.
