Contemporary Confederate Sword

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 26 of 498)      

Blade length 33", 38.5" overall.  28.5" fuller.  Brass hilt with wood grip.  Patriotic etching on blade with "CS" on left in one line and W.J. McCOY MACON GEO" on right in two lines.  Steel scabbard with brass furniture and patriotic engraving.  

Condition: Good condition.  Blade has some darkening, hilt has taken on a dull patina with some verdigris forming.  Scabbard has been cleaned with an uneven brown and gunmetal patina.

Lot of Two U.S. Rifle Bayonets

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 27 of 498)      

Lot includes one US marked .58 caliber bayonet in two rivet scabbard and one US marked .58 caliber bayonet in seven rivet scabbard with contract mark, possibly E.A. Crossman.  

Condition: Good condition.  Bayonets show some darkening and pitting but have clear stamps.  Scabbards have some signs of age and wear such as blooming and light cracking, but are still flexible.

Blade length 30," overall length 36."  20.5" fuller.  Sharkskin grip wrapped with gilt wire and brass guard.  No scabbard.  

Condition: Good condition.  Blade has an even gunmetal grey patina with no serious chips or dents on edge.  Guard has darkened with etching still clear.  Grip has no fraying or loosening of wire or rayskin

Pattern 1860 Light Cavalry Sword by J. B. Allere

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 29 of 498)      

Blade length 35", 40.5" overall.  Wire-wrapped leather grip.  Left of ricasso marked "J.B.A.",designating manufacture by J.B. Allere of Chicago. Right side marked "M."  Pommel marked J.M.  Steel scabbard.  

Condition: Very good condition.  Blade has a gunmetal gray patina with an intact grip and pommel taking on a dark mustard patina.  Edge has three small dents.  Inspector and manufacturer stamps crisp.  Scabbard has an uneven mix of gunmetal gray and plumb patina.  Scabbard has some dents.

Pattern 1840 Artillery Sword

Blade length 32", 37.5" overall.  24.5" fuller.  Wire wrapped leather grip.  Left side of knuckle bow marked "32."  

Condition: Fair condition.  Blade has some darkening.  Grip and pommel have been painted with much of the paint revealing a red and bronze finish underneath.  Scabbard has a dull gunmetal patina and shows signs of repair.

Blade length 32", 38.75" overall.  30" fuller.  Brass hilt and guard.  Left side of ricasso marked "C. ROBY W.CHELMSFORD MASS" with right side marked "US 1865 AGM"  Knuckle bow marked "A.G.M."Leather scabbard with brass hardware.  Right side of throat lightly marked "HOE". Chape marked "A.G.M." 

Condition: Very good condition.  Blade is bright with some darkening.  Guard has a dull mustard patina.  Scabbard is in very good condition, missing one screw at throat.  Leather is flexible and free of heavy cracking or peeling.

Import Pattern 1840 Cavalry Sword

Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 32 of 498)      

Blade length 36", 27" fuller, 41" overall.  Brass hilt with wire wrapped leather grip.  Steel scabbard.  Ricasso marked with crown and "G.G." indicating possible manufacture in Germany.  Also marked "86" on pommel and front branch of guard.  

Condition: Good condition.  Blade shows some darkening with light dents on edge.  Hilt has a mustard patina with patches of bronze. Wire on grip is intact.  Scabbard has few dents, with a gunmetal patina and patches of light rust and pitting.

Civil War Bowie Knife by Buck Bros. Worcester, Mass.

Lot # 37 (Sale Order: 35 of 498)      

6.25" spear point blade, markings on each side of the blade "Buck Brothers."  German silver ferrule and guard with rosewood handle.

Condition: Blade is in good condition with salt and pepper pitting blending to a patina.  The markings are good but fading. The handle in good condition with minor nicks and dings. The German silver ferrule guard has a nice even patina.

27" spear point single edged blade with full length fuller.  Brass hit with steel scabbard.  Marked "CSN" and "1862" on guard.  No other discernible markings.  Mismatching scabbard.

Condition: Fair condition.  Blade has a dull patina with rust and pitting throughout.  Hilt has a mustard patina with numerous marks, dents, and discoloration.  Scabbard has a gunmetal patina with rust throughout.

Blade length 35" with 27.5" fuller.  Overall length 41".  Brass hilt with wooden grip.  Steel scabbard.  Marked "U.S. C.E.W. 1864" in three lines right of ricasso.  Illegible markings left of ricasso.  Pommel marked "H.C"  

Condition: Fair condition.  Blade has completely darkened with rust throughout.  Hilt has a mustard patina and the guard is slightly bent.  Grip has lost its leather and wire wrapping.  Scabbard darkened throughout with some pitting.

Blade length 35" with 28" fuller.  Overall length 41".  Marked "C. ROBY & CO." Brass guard with wire-wrapped leather grip.  Pommel cap marked "61" 

Condition: Fair condition.  Blade has been cleaned, but evidence of heavy pitting throughout.  Hilt has a dull patina.  One branch of guard has been broken and repaired.  Some loss of leather from grip.

Blade length 29.25", 35" overall.  Brass hilt with wood grip.  Steel scabbard with brass hardware.  Made in style of U.S. M1860 staff officer's sword.  

Condition: Poor condition.  Blade is heavily darkened with pitting at ricasso.  Grip has lost its leather and wire wrapping.  Brass has dull patina with brozne coloring and rust present. Scabbard is rusted.

Blade length 32" with 30.5" fuller.  Overall length 38.5"  Marked "U.S. ADK 1863" in three lines right of ricasso.  Wire wrapped brass hilt marked "AHC" on right on knuckle bow.  Marked MADE BY AMES MFG CO. CHICOPEE MASS" in four lines left of ricasso.  

Condition: Good condition.  Blade has a gunmetal gray patina with some darkening from age.  Ames stamp very faint.  Hilt has a mustard patina with some darkening to bronze near guard and pommel.

4.75" spear point blade and 9" overall length.  Ricasso marked"Man" over "Hattan" over "Cutlery Co.".  German silver knuckle guard with bone grips and red leather sheath.  Sheath has German silver throat and tip.

Condition: Blade has very fine salt and pepper pitting throughout.  Markings on ricasso are good.  Grips are good with a pleasing yellowing patina.  Sheath is in good condition with some cracking to the leather.

8.25" blade etched Self Protector.Stamped Manufactured by W & S Butcher Sheffield. German silver hollow cutlery handle with German silver guard. Overall length 13".  Complete with original leather sheath with German silver tip. 

Condition: Blade is noticeably pitted on both sides. Leather sheath with numerous scuffs. Etched panel on blade is very visible. Good.

Reproduction Artillery Uniform on Wooden Form

Lot # 48 (Sale Order: 46 of 498)      

12-button US pattern enlisted artillery shell jacket. Dark blue wool construction with red grosgrain tape trim, burgundy satin lining in body and sleeves. 2.5" standing collar, functional cuffs, pillows at rear of coat. Mixed hand and machine sewn construction with hand-sewn buttonholes. Buttons with various back marks, primarily Horstmann and Scovill.

Condition: Good. Shows light wear and a few small moth holes. Some of the stitching is coming loose.

Relic Possible Confederate-Used US Eagle Head Pommel Saddle

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 48 of 498)      

20" length.  Saddle is complete with four iron rings and two rosettes on each side near the pommel. Both iron stirrups are stamped C.S.A. on each side. This saddle is quite possibly a Texas Confederate saddle.

Condition: Brass eagle head pommel is in very good condition and has been polished. All leather areas of the saddle are stiff and brittle. Large segment of leather missing near the front edge of the seat and appears to have been torn off a long time ago. Saddle is missing some tacks and is severed especially on the near side in the cantle region. Straps are in slightly better condition and still somewhat pliable. Near relic condition.

Large 19th Century Civilian Lockable Valise ca.1850

Lot # 51 (Sale Order: 49 of 498)      

19" x 8.75" x 6", brown tooled leather.  Inner flap closes with a brass bar complete with currently non-functioning brass pad lock and key.  The underside of the outer flap conceals a pocket of striped cotton, interior lined in white cotton.  All buckles lacking as are two of the three billet straps. 

Provenance: John Ashworth Collection

Condition: Good.  Normal age, service wear and stains.  Leather carry handle broken on one end.

Confederate "Y" Strap Pattern Saddle Bags

Lot # 52 (Sale Order: 50 of 498)      

Smaller size black leather semi-rigid double bags and connecting yoke.  Flaps closed with a "Y" shaped billet, both now broken.  Complete with iron buckles.  An unusual pattern, the "Y" billet is typical of Confederate construction. 

Provenance: John Ashworth Collection

Condition: Fair to good.  Overall age crazing, the yoke has been reinforced with new leather on the underside.
