Brass Boxlock Blunderbuss Flintlock Pistol by Nock

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 460)      

.56 caliber, flared to .78 at muzzle, 6" round, blunderbuss-style brass barrel, no S/N. Brass construction, smooth walnut grip. Obverse frame engraved with a panoply of arms and with the barrel engraved LONDON , reverse frame engraved H NOCK in a wreath. London commercial proof marks on bottom of barrel, concealed by bayonet blade. Box lock, flint lock action, snap bayonet under barrel released by triggerguard. German silver shield escutcheon in grip. Wood ramrod in pipes on reverse of barrel. Henry Nock worked in London ca 1770-1804.

Condition: Very good. Brass with a dull golden patina, markings and engraving remain clear, with some scattered bumps and dings in the metal. Mechanically functional, snap bayonet does not lock into place securely due to locking spring being weak. Good bore with moderate oxidation. Grip with scattered bumps and dings.

Early Spanish Miquelet Pistol

.675 bore diameter, 9' octagonal-to-round barrel with cannon muzzle. Two hallmarks on the top of the breech. Carved decorative steelwork covering rear half of the barrel. Floral design pieced brass work on the butt of the stock and around the tang. Large belt hook, iron triggerguard. Walnut stock.

Condition: All brass has nice untouched patina. Barrel and triggerguard with nice patina, smooth and no major pitting. Stock with nice uncleaned original patina. Overall an excellent example of a Spanish pistol made in the mid-1700s.

Pair of 18th Century Silver Mounted English Flintlock Pistols by Smith

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 460)      

.58 caliber, 9.125" octagonal-to-round barrels, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock, silver mounts. 4.625" long flat locks engraved SMITH with sliding cock safeties, fenced, waterproof pans, roller frizzes and flat faceted swan neck cocks. Silver triggerguards with Birmingham assay marks, including the Birmingham anchor, the lion passant, the date letter "I" in shield and an illegible maker's mark. The "I" letter dented 1781 production. The maker's mark on the deeply chiseled classical butt caps are illegible as well, but the same assay marks and date codes are present. Barrels with Tower private proofs, sterling openwork side plate, thumb plate and with silver wire forming an apron around the tangs. Include bone tipped wood ramrods that appear to be original to the pistols. Likely the work of William Smith, who apprenticed to the famous maker John Joyner in 1766 and worked in London during the latter part of the 18th century and early 19th century.

Condition: Very good. Metal cleaned to bright with some light pitting on the locks and cocks. Barrel with scattered surface oxidation and discoloration. Mechanically functional, heavily oxidized bores are very dirty. Silver mounts dull and lightly tarnished. Both stocks with scattered bumps, dings, scuffs and light scratches. One with some repaired cracks and replaced wood in the forend near the tip, the other with a crack running about 2" from the front of the lock to the forend and a 3.5" spliced replaced piece of wood at the forend, essentially from the pipe forward.

Pair of 18th Century German Flintlock Pistols by F. Petter

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 30 of 460)      

.54 caliber, 9.25" octagonal-to-round barrels, no S/N. Bright finish, brass mounts, blued small parts, beech stocks. Both pistols marked "1" on their tangs. 4.75" flat beveled flint locks with relief carved hunting and game scenes, unbridled faceted pans and flat beveled swan-neck cocks that are engraved en-suite with the locks, as are the fronts of the frizzes. Locks remain in original flint and are both signed F Petter in the "v" of the frizzen springs. Deeply chiseled brass mounts with panoplies of arms and heroic motifs on the butt caps, hunting scenes on the side plates and flowing foliate and feathery themes on the triggerguards, nose caps and other mounts. Barrels with simple, light engraving and traces of gold gilt highlights. Stocks with raised carved aprons around the locks, and along the backstops, with simple raised motifs and incised lines along the fronds. Brass tipped wood ramrods.

Condition: Very good. Metal cleaned to bright leaving the engraving on the barrels weak with only traces of gilt. One pistol with a repaired tang, showing a well-executed dovetailed patch. Both locks fully functional, mounts lightly cleaned with a golden color. Both stocks with some repairs with some wood filler around both lock mortises. One stock with 2" angled and spliced section of wood replaced at the forend tip and with a repaired crack through the grip. This same pistol shows replaced wood and more repaired cracks on the reverse near the butt cap. The other pistol some minor filler around the forend tip and a repaired crack through the grip at the butt cap. All repairs are neatly accomplished and do not substantially detract from the overall aesthetic quality of the pistols.

Early Spanish Ripoll

Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 31 of 460)      

.740 bore diameter, 7.775" octagonal-to-round barrel with cannon-style muzzle. Gunmaker's stamp on the top of the breech, ( MAS ) ( Domingo Mas, Ripoll gunmakers) circa 1715. Lockplate is beautiful early style with chiseled work on hammer and frizzen pan. The stock has finely pierced brass overlays around rear barrel breech extending down to the ball butt. Brass engraved sheathing covering entire front end to muzzle. Triggerguard has brass inlay work around it. Nice pierced brass overlays covering the entire bottom of ball butt. The brass strip around both sides of stock in the middle of the gun. Some silver inlays and silver wire work rear of the front band. Engraved front brass band. Long belthook, iron tipped ramrod.

Condition: The barrel is gray with some staining and pitting. The belt hook has some pitting is mostly gray metal. Brass with nice patina. Stock is very good with nice dark patina. Overall this is an excellent example of early Ripoll pistol.

18th Century English Flintlock Holster Pistol

.58 caliber, 13" octagonal-to-round barrel, slightly swamped at the muzzle, no S/N. Bright finish, brass mountings, walnut stock. 5.125" flat beveled, semi-banana-shaped lock engraved with panoplies of arms and heroic scenes. Original flint lock with removable, unbridled, faceted pan, flat beveled swan-neck cock and a steel with a period refacing, showing decorative engraving on the front of the frizzen. Barrel with Crown/V English proof marks, and an illegible marker's or retailer's name engraved on the top flat. Deeply chiseled gilt brass mounts with classical, heroic and martial themes with a lion's face buttcap and languets extending 2.5" from the grip mount. Thumb plate escutcheon with classically themed bust. Faceted ramrod thimble and entry pipe, horn tipped wood ramrod. Stock with relief carving over most of its surfaces with flowing vines and floral themes and a carvings around the tang forming a decorative apron.

Condition: Very good. Metal cleaned, leaving the engraved mark illegible. Metal with a mottled oxidized brown over gray patina. Engraving on lock remains crisp, mounts sharp. Barrel with small welded repair 3.25" from the muzzle. Mechanically functional, oxidized bore is very dirty. Stock very good with the expected bumps and dings, some minor chipping around the grip cap and couple of hairline cracks in the grip, but without the major repairs and restoration normally encountered on mid-18th century pistols.

Chiseled Spanish Miquelet Pistol

Lot # 35 (Sale Order: 34 of 460)      

.50 caliber, 8.5" octagonal-to-round barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, hardwood stock, chiseled and open work iron mounts. Highly figured miquelet lock with grooved frizzen decorated with strange and somewhat unsettling humanoid motifs that more closely resemble escapees from Area 51 than anything human. This strange motif is repeated throughout the chiseled and open work mounts on the pistol. Includes a wooden ramrod.

Condition: Good. Metal with a dull pewter patina, showing some scattered surface oxidation and discoloration. Lock needs mechanical attention, bore heavily oxidized, dark and dirty. Stock with scattered handling marks and an old crack in the grip on the reverse.

Sideplate chiseled with a human face. Hammer crew with face design. Triggerguard with a deep chiseled face on the forward section with finial. Rear ferule has face chiseled with finial. Walnut stock with deep relief carving.

Condition: All metal has been cleaned in a European manner and has begun to repatinate. Stock is excellent. Overall a great museum quality pistol.

Early Brescian Snaphaunce Pistol

.560 bore diameter, 15.5" octagonal-to-round barrel with cannon-style muzzle, 22" overall. Lockplate engraved with deep chiseled face on the rear of the lockplate, and on the hammer screw; frizzen spring nicely engraved; engraved steel lacework, belt hook, steel butt cap. Typical Brescian pierced designs at barrel and tang. Buttplate has engraved foliage. Sideplate has an open pierced vine design. Walnut stock.

Provenance: From the Joe Kindig collection.

Condition: All metal has been nicely clean to bright, no pitting smooth. The stock is excellent. An excellent example of early Brecian snaphaunce pistol. Circa early 1700's.

Pair of German Flintlock Pistols

.520 bore diameter, 11" octagonal-to-round tapered barrel, The long barrels of Spanish form with gilt stamped German proofs at the octagonal breeches with silver foresights. The flat lock plates finely relief-chiseled with strap work and a lion rampant. The swan neck cocks chiseled en suite with the locks and frizziness. Figured and molded light walnut full stocks are carved in relief at barrel tangs and under rear ramrod pipes. The brass mounts are cast and chased with strap work. The full side plates cast and chased with dogs harrying a boar.

Condition: Condition is very good with little wear to engraving on steel and some original bluing on barrel of one pistol. Brass mounts retain traces of original gilding. Horn tipped ramrods possibly original. The locks retain their original small parts. Stocks are crisp though showing evidence of old cleaning. A very attractive pair of long mid-18th century German holster pistols.

Engraved iron mounted furniture, superbly designed delicately made lockplate with high relief floral motifs at the rear. All iron mounts have nice relief work on the parts. Walnut stock. Antonio Guisasola (Eibar gunmaker 1796-1820).

Condition: All metal has been cleaned in a European manner. The pistols have nice sharp and crisp lines. Stocks are excellent. Overall excellent.

.612 bore diameter, 7" tapered round barrels with ribs running from the breech to 2.5" finishing in a teardrop. Marked in the rib BarBar . Beveled lockplates marked Barber . Fine sterling silver mounted and hallmarked furniture. Nicely shaped fishtail butts with longspurs. The pommel has carved design surrounding nicely chiseled mask of a lions face chased in relief. Sideplates are intricate openwork design cast and chased with classic motifs of flowers, swags & tassels interlaced with leaves and sprays. Nicely carved walnut stocks.

Condition: barrel and locks are nicely cleaned in the European manner. Stocks are untouched with nice varnished patina.

Pair of 18th Century Austrian Flintlock Pistols

.52 caliber, 10.325" swamped barrels, no S/N. Bright finish, chiseled brass mounts, hard wood stocks with horn forend caps. Flat beveled locks engraved with simple engraving of martial and game scenes. Lock with faceted, fenced, bridled pans with engraved decorative covers over the frizzen springs and flat topped frizzens with engraved fronts. Flat beveled swan necked cocks engraved en-suite . Barrels with flowing Damascus patterning, flowing relief-carved vine motifs at the breech that enhanced with silver and three .125" mine cut garnets on each pistol. Chiseled brass mounts with game and classical scenes. Stocks with stylized fleur-de-lis patterned raised carved aprons around the tangs, simple raised borders around the locks and some incised line carving along the forends. Horn tipped wooden ramrods secured by faceted brass pipes. A lovely pair of highly embellished Austrian pistols from the mid-18th century.

Condition: Very good. Metal cleaned to bright, now dulling to a medium pewter patina. All engraving remains crisp and sharp. Locks mechanically functional, one cock with a brazed repair at neck. Bores very good but somewhat dirty. Stocks with scattered bumps and dings. One with a small repaired crack along the upper stock line near the nose cap on the obverse and a repaired crack through grip with some minor wood loss along the grip strap. The other with a small repaired chip along the upper edge of stock line and no major repairs noted.

Early Pair of Torsco-Emelian Snaphance Pistols

.44 caliber, 8.4375", no S/N. Bright finish, engraved and openwork steel mounts, hardwood stocks. Profusely engraved snaphance locks with flowing floral motifs. Sliding pan covers, flat, reinforced cocks engraved en-suite. Octagonal portion of barrels engraved with floral and feathery sprays, engraved openwork aprons at tangs. Mounted with steel belt hooks on the reverse. Plain steel butt caps with extended langets, steel ramrods.

Condition: Very good. Metal with scattered surface oxidation and discoloration and some light pitting. Locks mechanically functional, bores dirty and moderately oxidized. Stocks with scattered bumps and dings, as well as some minor wood loss and chipping along the edges of the forend, with some scattered minor grain cracks as well.

Rare Early Spanish Madrid Lock Flintlock Pistol Circa 1730

.60 caliber, 10" slightly swamped octagonal-to-round barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, gilt brass and silver mounts, hardwood stock. Top of barrel with the gold maker's marks of A.P. Esteva and invade silver decorative motifs. Original flintlock with gold maker's mark of Ose P. Deop . 4.875" flat beveled lock is profusely engraved with tight foliate patterns at the tail and a Griffin under the pan. Bridled and fenced pan with grooved steel face, flat beveled swan neck cock engraved en-suite with the lock with a ring style top jaw screw. Deeply chiseled brass mounts with applied silver classical heroic busts on the thumb plate, butt cap and triggerguard. Stock with raised carved foliate apron at tang and incised lines along forend and around lock. Wood ramrod. A. Pedro Esteva worked in Barcelona ca 1714-1750.

Condition: Very good. Metal cleaned to bright and now dulling with scattered light oxidation and discoloration on the barrel. Lock a dull smoky gray color with crisp engraving. Mechanically functional, oxidized bore with some pitting and dirt. Stock with scattered bumps and dings, a repaired crack through the wrist above the thumb plate, with some replaced wood and added finish.

Gilt Bronze-Mounted Flintlock Pistols

A very fine pair of early 18th century gilt bronze mounted Austrian flintlock holster pistols with fluted barrels by Lazarino Cominazzo Austrian from Ettersburg Castle. Locks of flattened form with pointed tails are engraved with scrolls issuing from the mouth of a monster. The elegant swan necked cocked engraved en suite engraved with a floral design top jaws engraved with a shield. The elegant 13 inch long Spanish formed barrels with beautiful fluting at breech, signature Lazarino Cominazzo . Walnut full stocks beautifully relief carved around triggerguard and at breech. Full gilt bronze Carlsbad-type mount with side plated cast in plate sand relief soldier in mounted combat and female captives tied to plinth. Triggerguard cast and chased in relief. Bust of a queen spurred butt caps cast in chase and relief with warrior end pommel with raised relief grotesque mask. Barrels with steel foresights. Both pistols in identical condition. Locks retaining all original polish. Barrels with mostly there polish, hand only light arsenal-type staining. bronze mounts retain all original fire gilding. Triggers retain all original blue; screws retain niter blue. Stocks are in virtually pristine condition retaining all original varnish finish. Pistols are over 20 inches overall. As with all pistols coming from Ettersburg Castle, retains outstanding conditions.

S. North Model 1808 2nd Contract Naval Flintlock

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 49 of 460)      

.64 caliber, 10" round pinned barrel, no S/N. Brown finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Flat beveled lock in original flint with matching assembly marks throughout, marked S. NORTH / BERLIN / CON at tail and with an {eagle} / U. STATES forward of the cock. Removable brass pan, rounded reinforced cock. Top jaw and screw may be replacements. Brass side plate, triggerguard, butt cap and ramrod pipe. Iron belt hook. Wooden ramrod an old replacement. Only 3,000 of these early US Navy handguns were produced ca 1808-1810 and remain difficult pistols to acquire for any collection. This would be a fabulous addition to an advanced War of 1812 US Navy collection.

Condition: Very good. Barrel with a evenly oxidized medium brown patina, about .125" short of full length. Lock cleaned to bright with a pewter patina and clear markings. Mechanically functional, fair bore, deeply oxidized and pitted. Brass with a nice mustard patina. Stock with some cracks in the forend and one behind the lock. Three deep grooves cut into the stock on the reverse under the belt hook. A solid, original flint example of a rare US martial pistol from the War of 1812 period.

.36 caliber, 7" octagonal-to-round barrel. Marked on left flat of barrel A.W. Waters Milbury Mass . Notched rear barrel sight small blade front sight. Two-piece walnut grips.

Condition: All finish has turned to a dark brown patina. Nice sharp and crisp lines with crisp markings. Grips are very good with minimal nicks and dings. Overall very good for a rare American maker.
