Composite Flintlock Musket

Lot # 507 (Sale Order: 423 of 663)

.70 caliber, 42" round barrel, bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked "TOWER" at the tail, with a weak British crown forward of the hammer. The only other marking is a P proof on the barrel.  Three barrel bands, sling swivels, Indian War era leather canteen sling used as sling. Contemporary flash guard and firzzen cover added. The gun appears to be a re-conversion of a percussion altered state contract US 1816 musket, using a British military lock. The touch hole has been bushed, suggesting that the gun was a drum conversion at some point in time.

Condition: Fair to good. Not mechanically functional, loose frizzen. Barrel and iron furniture with streaky brown over gray patina, some scattered oxidation and old dried grease. Stock with moderate wear, bumps and dings and a couple of old cracks on the reverse at the lock mortise and some additional grain cracks in the butt.

U.S. M1808 Miles Contract Musket

Lot # 508 (Sale Order: 424 of 663)

.69 caliber, 42" barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Lock marked with small upper portion of an Eagle over US forward of the hammer and MILES at the tail. Lock appears to be original flint, with integral fenced iron pan and flat, reinforced cock. Barrel appears to be marked 1813 and with an M - possibly a Maryland issued gun. Pitting on barrel and circular shadow around touch hole suggest the barrel is reconverted. Three iron barrel bands with retaining springs to their rears. Retains both sling swivels and an original ramrod.

Condition: Good. Metal with a thick brown patina, breech heavily pitted. Lock functional, but fits poorly in the mortise. Bore fair. Stock with numerous repairs around lock area and scattered bumps and dings, with some some wood loss forward of the middle band. A well used, War of 1812 vintage musket.

Independent Maker US 1808 Contract Musket

Lot # 510 (Sale Order: 426 of 663)

.70 caliber,  44.5" barrel retained by three barrel bands. Bright finish, walnut stock. No visible proof marks on the barrel. Flat pointed lock plate with fenced and bridled iron pan and a flat reinforced cock. Lock plate marked with an American eagle motif. Appears to be original flint, with all internal lock parts assembly numbered "13". The letters "LS" are stamped in the wood behind the triggerguard - possibly a Luther Sage inspection. A typical example of some of the unknown makers producing "1808 Contract" pattern muskets during the Federal era, likely for sale to state or local governments.

Condition: Good to very good. Metal with a thickly oxidized brown patina and some scattered surface roughness and pinpricking. Bright metal under the barrel bands.  Mechanically functional, dark dirty bore.
