Cowan's Auctions is pleased to kick off the year with a live auction on January 23, 2020, at our sales room in Cincinnati, Ohio. With a wide variety covering many collecting genres such as military firearms and accouterments to sporting firearms. Among the highlights of the auction are some rare Indian War accouterments from well-known Indian War collector Bob Snitselaar. Also, highlighted are some collectible Japanese Officer's swords and arrowheads. A fine selection of World War II U.S. Army Air Forces insignia. Collectors are sure to find an item that fits well into their collection.

Lot Of Two 1902 Military Swords

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 256)      

Both swords are engraved. First nickel plated blade measures 31.5" in length with a .75" wide forte and a hilt measuring 5.25" in length. Second nickel plated blade measures 30" in length with a 1" wide forte and a hilt measuring 5" in length. 

Condition: Both blades have flaking nickel along with slight rust on scabbards. Otherwise they are in fair condition with no other visible damage or notches.

British 2nd Life Guards Officer's Sword

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 256)      

Elizabeth II Period, 37" straight single edged blade with fuller, engraved with battle honors and an "ER II" cypher. ricasso Wilkinson maker marked. Hilt has a nickel plated steel full guard with brass decorative elements and a regimental cypher with queen's crown, lined in white buff leather with matching sword knot, grip wrapped in black shagreen leather and silver wire, nickel back strap and brass pommel cap. Complete with nickel steel scabbard with brass drag and hanger rings on Turk's head bands.   

Condition: Excellent, blade in bright finish.

Engraved English Sword

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 256)      

Engraved spear point blade measuring 32.75" in length with a 1" wide forte. Steel hilt measuring 5.5" in length. Steel scabbard measures 33.75" in length.

Condition: Steel blade has very little oxidation or pitting. Hilt and scabbard have oxidation and pitting consistent with age. Otherwise sword is in fair condition.

Lee Firearms Company Sporting Rifle

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 31 of 256)      

.44 caliber, 30.75" octagonal barrel, S/N 1774.  Blade front sight with semi-buckhorn rear sight block.  Top of barrel marked "LEE'S FIRE ARMS CO. MILWAKEE, WIS./PATd JULY 22d 1862."  Frame marked with serial number.

Condition: Fair.  Barrel has a mostly gray and oxidized patination with some scattered evidence of prior cleaning and scratching.  Frame has a dark mixed coloration with missing extractor.  Hammer has some rust and marring.  Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes with an apparent repair through wrist.  Not mechanically functional.  Bore has some scattered pitting and cratering with some wear to edges of rifling.

British Indian Army Snyder-Enfield Rifle

Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 32 of 256)      

.577 caliber, 36.5" barrel, no S/N.  Blued finish with full-length stock secured by three barrel bands. Blade front sight with ladder rear sight.  Brass nose cap, trigger guard, and buttplate.  Square-ended sideplate washers.  Hindi language markings throughout.  

Condition: Fair.  Metal parts have a mixed gunmetal coloration with scattered light needlepoint pitting. Barrel bands are slightly loose.  Stock shows scattered marks and blemishes with a minor stable crack through upper lockplate screw.  Otherwise free of major cracks and splits.  Action is functional; bore is fair to good; some old pitting with visible edges to rifling.

Smith Carbine

Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 256)      

.50 caliber, 20.25" barrel, S/N 15623.  Blued barrel with case hardened frame and half stock.  Blade front sight with leaf rear sight.  Receiver marked with typical three-line Poultney & Trimble and Massachusetts Arms Company markings and two-line Smith's patent markings.  Left side of stock marked with illegible initials in box along with what appears to be hand-carved "AP."  

Condition: Good.  Barrel has a mottled gunmetal gray patination with some patches of needlepoint pitting.  Frame has a mixed gunmetal patination.. Some handling marks and blemishes to stock including some apparent repairs to left side of forend, top of wrist adjacent to frame, and two stable splits on the left side of wrist.  Action is tight and functional.  Bore is good; some darkening with visible but worn rifling.

.22 LR caliber, 18.75" barrel, S/N L299.  Blued finish with plain forend and grip.  Blade front sight with rear sight block.  Top of barrel marked with caliber, model, and two-line Stevens address.  

Condition: Fair to good.  Barrel finish shows some minor thinning with some darkening in exposed areas.  Falling block screw is missing.  Stock has some handling marks and blemishes.  Bore shows some wear with some storage dust and grime.

Starr Carbine

.54 caliber, 21" barrel, no S/N.  Reblued barrel, case hardened breech block and lever with refinished stock.  brass barrel band and butt plate. Blade front sight with folding leaf rear sight.  Barrel marked "E.F.."  Lockplate marked "STARR ARMS Co/YONKERS N.Y.."  Breech block marked "STARR'S PATENT/SEPT. 14th 1858." 

Condition: Fair.  Some scratching to reblued finish with some case hardening remaining.  Forend has been replaced.  Repair on toe of butt stock.  Falling block action needs some attention but is functional.  Bore is somewhat dark with some old removed pitting at visible rifling.

Deluxe Civil War Light Artillery Officers Sword

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 36 of 256)      

.32" curved blade with etched panels of military motifs.  Marked on the blade Ames Mfg Chicopee Mass. Leather and gilt wire-wrapped handle, deluxe-style guard and pommel.  Metal scabbard with brown finish and brass carrying rings, brass drag.

Condition: Blade with a dull grey look. Some staining. Handle is very good.  Scabbard has been re-browned. Overall very good.

Confederate Bowie Knife With Louisiana Emblem

By John Lingard's Celebrated Bowie Knife Peacroft Sheffield. 6" clip point blade, 2.75" false edge, coffin-shaped German silver pommel with Louisiana Pelican feeding her young, German silver guard.  7.25" red leather with gold lines and German silver throat and tip scabbard. Marked on the blade near the guard John Lingard's Celebrated Bowie Knife Peacroft Sheffield.  

Condition: Blade has oxidation and pitting consistent with age and wear. Handle has oxidation and staining consistent with age. Leather scabbard show some minor flaking.  German Silver has nice oxidation. Overall in fair to good condition.

Bowie Knife with Wood handle

6.5" steel spear point blade, 1" wide forte, 4.5" stag handle, German silver pommel with eagle holding a shield also on the guard. Blade marked with maker's name Edward Barnes & Sons in a banner.

Condition: Blade has oxidation and pitting consistent with age and use. Handle is missing half of a quillon one side, but is otherwise intact. Overall in poor to fair condition. No scabbard.

Perry Patent Model For Breech-Loading Firearm, No. 210,626 (December 10, 1878)

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 40 of 256)      

34" overall length, 4.25" wide at widest point.  Rudimentary post front sight.  Edward L. Perry's patent claimed to improve and simplify the manufacture of toy firearms.  The threaded, detachable skeleton stock and "plunger" system were designed to be produced in a much more cost-effective manner.

Condition: Some peeling paint and scattered rust.  Parts move but are not functional.  Tags remain.

7x57mm caliber, 22" barrel, S/N 940.  Visible numbers matching.  Blade front sight with 1-14 rear tangent sight.  Barrel shows import markings.  Receiver marked with Chilean motto, crossed rifles, and model with German proofs throughout including Mauser banner just forward of bolt handle.  Left side of stock marked with Chilean coat of arms and 1936 date with stock maker's mark.  Includes non-matching bayonet.

Condition: Moderate wear to finish consistent with surplus arms with some mixed handling marks and blemishes to stock.  Bore is good with visible edges to rifling.

Lot consists of three yanone (arrowheads) of various types including karimata (rope-cutting), watakusi (barbed) and togari-ya (pointed).  No visible hamon (temper lines) with watakusi showing a somewhat illegible seven-character mei (signature).  

Condition: Some mixed oxidation and rust present.  Tangs show a layer of even, dark rust.  With proper, professional polishing could be returned to a beautiful state.

Japanese Officer's Shin Gunto

25" blade, 1.625" wide at collar.  Ihori-mune (back) with chu-kissaki (medium point).  Sanbonsugi hamon (temper line), likely false.  Taka no ha yasurime (file marks) with single mekugi-ana (peg hole) and ten-character katana-mei (katana style signature) accompanied by Showa tang stamp.  Military mountings with leather field cover.  

Condition: Sword has been previously cleaned in a manner unsuitable for Japanese swords, resulting in a poor polish and rounding of ridge line and kissaki.  Some deep pitting remaining.
