Civil War Union Cavalry M1851 Belt Buckle & Hanger

Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 9 of 388)

Buckle has the three piece eagle and appears to be like plate 617 of O'Donnell & Campbell Book. The buckle has bench mark 563 back edge. The keeper is unmarked. There is a 12" part of the belt near buckle with a very well done restoration entailing the adding of thin layer of modern leather to keep the original leather from breaking and reinforce the leather. It is so well done, you hardly see it. The condition is good to good plus because this rig can still be worn with a uniform torso or mannequin with care. Leather has some rough edges from flaking and fittings have a lot of green verdigris. However, this one is still sturdy for display options.

Great Confederate Made CSA Navy M1841 Sword

Lot # 13a (Sale Order: 14 of 388)

This is a fantastic confirmed Confederate made copy of the US M1841 naval cutlass sword that was copied and used primarily by the CSA Navy (Page 258-259 of Swords Of The American Civil War by Richard Bezdek). This sword is so unique because it not just has the leather scabbard with tin drag/tip and throat but has a D guard with "93" stamped into the crossguard. The 20.75" blade (27" overall) is unmarked and has center spine with many smaller sword play nicks to both blade edges. The blade is very dark and has heavy and even pitting on the entire blade. The tip is not blunted but these swords normally don't have a particularly pointy tip because they were used just as much as a tool as a weapon. The scale handle shows casting seams on both sides and even have the 3 rivet hole divots but are not functional or drilled but are leftover from the original casting from Union grips. The pummel retains the federal eagle and arrow bundle with very blurred detail from the casting. The brass crossguard has raised rim and very pleasant hammer pattern design on outer side. The half basket crossguard has a quillon with bend in it that was definitely bent in the field. The crossguard has a post production "93" stamped in hand guard and on the underside the shows the pressure from the stamping. There is also a small hole at top of hand guard that may have been for lanyard or sword knot. The leather scabbard is very fragile with some cracking and heavy flaking. Scabbard has shrunk over time and when sheathed, there is a 1" gap from throat to crossguard. The lengthwise leather stitched seam has no breaks and relatively secure and sturdy. The soldering two piece drag has two holes for rivets but they are not present but drag is holding in place. The one piece tin scabbard throat has a small frog lug and the back soldered seam has come apart and someone attempted to re-solder the seam. The back shows evidence of a tin loop once being there and some brown leather residue of the frog that was once in place. The loose 4" piece of the leather frog is present. The front piece of frog is present and in solid condition as part as leather part are concerned. Many different Confederate Navy wartime copies of the 1832 sword were made and this comes from one of those southern makers supplying the CSA. This has to be one of the rarest variations made and would made a center piece of the most discerning Civil War collector.

This is an incredible matching drummer boy tail coat and kepi grouping that is from the ex-Kenneth J. Budny collection. It is prominently displayed on the cover of Budny's 2005 Civil War Headgear book and is well described and takes center stage examination on pages 42-45 . We will have full page photos of the multi-page layout and text to serve as description. Since it left Budny's collection. The jacket's front buttons appear to be all period matching. It also appears to be in the same overall condition today as in 2005. It may be a bit dusty. The green wool has almost a velvet feel. There are some moth tracks and sporadic old period repairs and one 1" green patch repair on left arm bend of the elbow and series of small patch repairs on left middle back. The right sleeve has a bit more fading to the green fabric. The kepi has some fading in color and some of the red piping is frayed. Side buttons match and leather sweatband and hard visor are still tightly in place. There is some expert opinion that the kepi has French characteristics. There is 2" slit to kepi lining. Kepi shows some wear and hair oils on sweatband. We will grade both the kepi and jacket in very good condition. We welcome additional photo requests. This jacket and kepi will include a used copy of Budny's book. This is a chance to get one of the premier published Civil War grouping ever offered.

Civil War Union Drummer Belt & Stick Carrier Parts

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 25 of 388)

This set of 2 includes leather drummer's belt which is unmarked and in very good condition. The leather is not dried out and is very flexible and can be used on torso uniform. It is missing the brass drum stick holder. Shows age and wear. HOWEVER, the 2nd item is an original drum stick holder attachment. It is marked "C.L. Carrington" over "APL.4th". It is missing the prongs and is not a perfect fix to the belt with the placement of the prong holes. This group of 2 is an excellent candidate for a restoration project with original period parts.
