Large 19th Century American Eagle Carved Statue

Lot # 1000 (Sale Order: 1 of 329)

Due to the size/weight/fragility of this item, it will require a pick up or customer-arranged 3rd-party shipping. We will connect you with reputable transport companies after the auction. This is an incredible, mid 1800's carved American eagle that may have adorned a public or important building like a bank. It stands 29.25" tall with each wing measuring 28". It sits on a rock base with two metal rods protruding from the rocks into the bottoms on the claws. The gray painted wood rock base and the brown wood museum pedestal were made by the last owner 20 years ago just for this eagle. The brown wood pedestal is 40" x14" x14" and has developed long hairline cracks on all sides. The eagle is made from pieces for the torso, wings and at least couple of the claw talons. It is painted a very attractive muted brown tone paint scheme with traces of gold, silver, and red under the top layers. In spite of the underlying paint colors, none of the paint appears thick with any kind of layering. If there is one repair, it may be the left wing tip. See photos.

Civil & Indian War Officer M1851 Belt Buckle

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 6 of 329)

Model M1851 belt buckle worn by U.S. officers during the Civil War/Indian Wars. Measuring 3" wide by 2-1/8”T. Solid cast bronze. Officer buckles had the wreath cast in the design, not applied like NCO's. Central image of 13 stars with rays above and right-facing eagle below a worn "E Pluribus Unum" banner on a pebbled background. Rear of the buckle has a loop to secure to the belt end and a flat loop hook to clasp the belt on the wearer. Overall condition is good, with a consistent dull patina covering the entire surface. This earlier more primitive eagle design, with great detail on deeper, protected features, gives this likely dug buckle a nice presence. This buckle was part of the Civil War and Indian War display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.

Civil War Vice President Hannibal Hamlin Letter

Lot # 1016 (Sale Order: 17 of 329)

Personal correspondence from Hannibal Hamlin of Maine, the man who would be Abraham Lincoln’s Vice President from 1860-1864. This personal correspondence letter is on Hannibal Hamlin's own stationery, signed at bottom. Page measures 4-9/16 x 7-1/2". Top of page has an oval portrait image [middle aged] of Hannibal Hamlin [1" x 1-1/2"] affixed. Letter reads: "Hampden, May 14, 18__ Your form of the 6th most duly received. Yours Truly, H. Hamlin. Chas. G. Dill, Esq." Interestingly, Hamlin was a member of Company A, of the Maine State Guard, militia unit. When his company was called into service in the Summer of 1864, he was informed by the militia leaders that he did not have to muster with the unit, since he was the current Vice President of the United States. He opted to serve, arguing that he could set an example by doing the duty expected of any citizen, and the only concession made because of his office was that he was quartered with the officers. He reported to Fort McClary, in Kittery, in July, initially taking part in routine assignments including guard duty, and later taking over as company cook. He was promoted to Corporal during his service, and mustered out with the rest of his unit in mid-September. When the war ended, the desire for a successful reunification of the country, led the Vice President’s position to be filled by Andrew Johnson, who broadened Lincoln's base and could help with the Reconstruction. When Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theater, it was Andrew Johnson who became the next President of the United States, and not Hannibal Hamlin. Here is a chance to acquire a signature of a man who was a heartbeat away from becoming President of the United States, and was probably a fine mess hall cook.
Personal correspondence from Hannibal Hamlin of Maine, the man who would be Abraham Lincoln’s Vice President from 1860-1864. This personal correspondence letter is on Han...morenibal Hamlin's own stationery, signed at bottom.
