Jerry Garcia Tokyo Art Show at Parco Gallery

Lot # 52 (Sale Order: 51 of 348)

An original Jerry Garcia Parko Stores Tokyo art show poster, one of 20 sent to Jerry for his approval and permission to use the Snail Garden image; 15 of which he signed and numbered. From A to Z this show was a complete disaster, starting with when Parko received the first shipment of signed and numbered prints and discovered that they were not of the quality their buyers would purchase. So in a rush to produce a few high quality pieces they chose the Snail Garden and three others to print onto superior stock, which is why four of his early prints are not on the same stock as all of the others. It is widely believed that Jerry cancelled this show, but according to Jerry himself it was ongoing communications problems with the producers of his art series was the real culprit and it was Parco who ended the business relationship and cancelled this show. This is one of the 5 remaining unsigned posters sent to Jerry (making it actually rarer than the signed and numbered copies!). Dimensions: 23.25" X 33". Estimate: $3500...more

Rick Griffin's Unfolded "The Section" Poster

Lot # 57 (Sale Order: 56 of 348)

Rick Griffin's personal unfolded copy of "The Section" poster created for the album insert for his friend Russ Kunkle"s studio/session band. This band backed up everyone from Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby & Nash, James Taylor, Carole King and Warren Zevon, to name but a few acts they worked with over time. Without the section we would have never heard Spirit in the Sky for example. Five Section posters were found wrapped in craft paper wedged under his desk with the words "For my retirement" written on the outside which was obviously a prank intended for whomever found them. All but perhaps 10 of these posters were fed into the auto-fold machine, making the unfolded copies the rarest. Dimensions: 25" X 38". Estimate: $300

Rick Griffin 1967 FD-65 Hybrid Uncut Poster Sheet

Lot # 69 (Sale Order: 68 of 348)

A VERY interesting early 1967 Rick Griffin FD-65 Avalon Ballroom official promoter-issued second printing proof sheet variant that features a yellow-border poster alongside a set of six white-border cards, a never before seen mystery! This show was for the Canned Heat Blues Band appearing with Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin 6/8-11/1967. Good/decent B condition with a hint of edge toning, a few stray surface marks and tiny stains, but overall not too bad- no holes/tears or anything major. This is just a rare, unusual, funky fun one of a kind original 1967 Rick Griffin poster proof that has a great largely unknown background history. Every poster has a story and Rick used to laugh and grow mystical when people would ask him about the source of inspiration for the artwork on this poster, or ask him if he had ever met, or knew the lady used in the central image. His standard answer was "She came to me in a book of dreams" and years later Detroit artist Mark Arminski discovered exactly what Rick meant by that when he found an old copy of "Aunt Sally's Policy Players Dream Book Study of Harmony in Numbers" written by Henry J Wehman in 1889 for lottery and numbers game players with the artwork Rick used for this poster. This was later verified and confirmed by Rick's partner in the California Graphic Exchange, Jose Kent who still had the Aunt Sally's book Rick originally used to reproduce the image from. Dimensions: 28.5 X 22.5". Estimate: $650...more

Skeleton and Roses Poster, Stanley Mouse, Signed

Lot # 73 (Sale Order: 72 of 348)

Skeleton and Roses poster with gold border. Signed in gold by Stanley Mouse. The signature "Sullivan" is in the bottom right corner. Edmund Joseph Sullivan (1869-1933), was a British book illustrator who worked in a style which merged the British tradition of illustration from the 1860s with aspects of Art Nouveau. Later in his career, he illustrated the First Version of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam translated by Edward Fitzgerald, using images of skeletons and animated pots. Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley found this illustration in the book of poems at the library. Dimensions: 22" x 28" Estimated Value $100-300
