US Army War of 1812 Second Model Pattern Virginia Manufactory Sword (AM)

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 17 of 273)

This US Army War of 1812 Second Model Pattern Virginia Manufactory Sword is in good condition, but no scabbard. This example is the rare Second Model Sword and lacks only...more the leather wrapping to the handle. The rounded pommel and guard with a sword-knot distinguish it from the First Models. First and Second Model Swords were not poplar with Virginia militiamen due to their great length. With a strongly curved blade of 41” resembling “Turkish Scimitars”) they were not easy to handle and were replaced in 1808 by the Third Model which featured a relatively straight blade of only 36” in length.

Civil War Era Navy Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Breach Loading 52 Caliber Carbine Antique:1901 (DJQ1)

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 20 of 273)

Civil War Era, Navy Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Breach Loading .52 Caliber Carbine in good to very good condition. Most importantly, this carbine maintains its original l...moreeather hand-guard. This leather was intended to protect the metal from salt air to prevent corrosion, but did just the opposite. Most of these carbines had the leather removed in service, but this model retains the original leather. The bore is good to very good with strong rifling. Mechanically the carbine appears to function properly. A very rare example of a civil war naval carbine.

Civil War era Colt Model 1861 Special Percussion Rifle (DJQ 1)

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 21 of 273)

This peculiar rifle musket, part US M-1861 Springfield and part English P-1853 Enfield, came into existence largely by chance. Due to the unexpectedy short duration of th...moree Crimean War in the 1850's, Colt was able to purchase at fire-sale prices all of Robbins & Lawrence's Enfield machinery. When the Civil War began, the War Department asked Colt if he could produce Springfield M-1861 rifle muskets, to which Colt replied on the spot that he could produce 500,000. Colt then developed the Model 1861 Special Musket that looked and felt like a Springfield M1861, but functioned like and Enfield. Approximately 100,000 were produced for government contract during the Civil War. This one displays Government inspector stamp on the barrel and cartouches on the wood, indicating military issue. Lockplate markings are the standard Colt Special with “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT”. Dated “1864” behind the hammer. Barrel is pitted and worn, with the follwoing markings: proof marks “V / P/ with 'Eagle head' character” on the barrel breech facet; a worn date “1862”faintly visible on the barrel tang; appears to read “N J ” and clearly reads “STEEL” on the left side. Barrel exhibits the standard two leaf rear sight and screw type barrel bands. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the upper band. Wood flat opposite the hammer shows two government inspector cartouches. Walnut stock is slightly pitted and worn, as typical.
