ATTRIBUTED TO PETER SMITH (1798-1833). Cal. 50 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 39 1/2". Overall length 53 3/4". Beautifully engraved 4 piece brass patchbox w/ 7 piercings, very long sculptured engraved tapering brass comb inlay covering the entire comb & 21 silver inlays. The silver cheekpiece inlay is an elegant engraved American eagle, in addition there are two nicely engraved eagle inlays, one on each side of the stock forward of the lock & sideplate. Extremely elaborate brass sideplate engraved w/ 5 piercings & the brass engraved toeplate runs entirely from the trigger guard to the toe of the butt. There are two brass inlays, one on each side of the bbl. tang, & the lockplate is fully engraved. Peter Smith was born in 1756 in Berks County, the son of Peter & Cathrine Smith. He was listed as gunsmith in New Berlin in 1800. CONDITION: very good overall, appears to be original flint w/ wallowed vent hole in patent breech w/ integral tang, stock is sound w/ crack repair at wrist, 5" sliver inset forward of lock. Bbl. initials are obscured due to pitting. One silver inlay forward of the cheekpiece is missing. This is likely one of the most highly decorated guns in this collection.
