Cal. 44 HRF. S# 22563. Bbl. 24" oct. Top flat marked "HENRY'S - PATENT - OCT. 16, 1860 / KING'S PATENT MARCH 29 1866". Sporting front sight w/ hand made fixed V notch rear sight. Brass action, forearm tip & crescent buttplate. Walnut forearm & straight grip stock. Right side of butt has brass tacks w/ markings that resemble a backwards "J" & "M". Wendell Grangaard of South Dakota has unlocked the key to "togia", the pictographic language of the Cheyenne & Sioux Plains Indians. In his book "Documenting the Weapons used at the Little Big Horn", Mariah Press, 2015, Mr. Grangaard opens a window on Western History by translating the togia markings on historic Indian used weapons. The togia markings on this rifle, as translated by Mr. Grangaard, indicate the rifle was used by Many Kills, who rode w/ Chief Medicine Wolf at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Many Kills was a member of the Heyoka Military Society of the Cheyenne Lightning Society. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: folder of provenance titled "BATTLE of the LITTLE BIG HORN / A HISTORIC NATIONAL TREASURE" includes letters by Wendell Grangaard of Guns of History Inc. Photographs overlaid w/ diagrams of the togia markings show their meanings as translated by Mr. Grangaard. CONDITION: bbl. & mag. tube have faded to gray showing scattered light pitting. Mag. tube has darkened front portion that may indicate touch up finish. Brass parts show evidence of polishing & starting to reacquire a tarnish. Wood has age darkened appearance showing numerous scratches, dents & handling marks including the togia marks that are translated by Mr. Grangaard. Stock has crack extending from right side of receiver. Forearm has a full length added wood repair along the left bbl. channel. Bore is dark & pitted w/ worn rifling. (01-16346/DS). ANTIQUE. $17,500-30,000.
