This is a rare magazine pouch that is a prototype US WW2 design based on the German MP40 Pouch. These were never adopted for use, but were used in trials, and there are several other known examples out there in collections. This one is made of late war US OD Green canvas with leather stud and strap closures. The leather is drying, but is complete and unbroken. The back of the pouch has two slanted belt loops with rings for a shoulder strap. The shoulder strap is present with this example. It does appear that someone has covered a maker stamping under the flap with marker. Even though the closure strap is drying, this is a rare piece that you won't be able to find for years.
