RARE Press Button Knife Co. Walden NY 1892-1923 American Automatic Knife / Fork For One Arm Man

Lot # 11

Sold and marked on blade by Artificial Limbs & Specialties New York, used condition patina on blade surface scratches on case, slight wobble to blade when open, fully closes and locks. The Press Button Knife Co was a division of the Walden Knife Company and are among the oldest and most collectible of all the American made switchblades. This was the most recognized model Press Button Made and most unusual, yet it was specifically designed for individuals with one arm to assist in feeding and was referred as the "One Armed Man". It measures 4 1/2" closed and featured polished aluminum handles. The 4" mirror polished curved blade features a three prong "fork" at the end and has an extremely sharp, razor edge. The Press Button Knife Co was originally set up as a special division of the Walden Knife Co and was directed by George Schrade who bought an interest in the company and manufactured 9 basic patterns of Press Buttons with three of these being sold by Sears Roebuck in their catalog at the turn of the century. Schrade continued to work for the Walden Knife Co until 1903 before breaking off and selling his interest and forming a company with his brothers (Schrade Cutlery Company)..Approx 1911 Walden became a subsidiary of the Simmons Hardware Co in St Louis with five models produced and marked Keen Kutter..In 1922 Simmons merged with the Winchester Arms Co and it was decided to close the Walden Knife Co in 1923 which ended the Press Button Knife Co. So in summary, any switchblade marked Press Button Knife Co is a worthy investment due to the early manufacture. {in house shipping available}

2 Framed United Mine Workers Of Americad Photo Collages

Lot # 26

1- 18 1/2" X 22 1/2" framed International Executive Board United Mine workers Of America July 1948 John L. Lewis President. 1- 21 3/4" X 25 3/4" framed 1966 International Officers United Mine Workers Of America President W. A . "Tony" Boyle.    William Anthony "Tough Tony" Boyle (December 1, 1904 ? May 31, 1985), a miner and union representative from Montana, became president of the United Mine Workers of America union in 1963, serving until 1972. He was convicted in 1974 of charges of conspiracy in the murder of opponent Joseph A. Yablonski, his wife Margaret, and their daughter Charlotte, on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1969. After an appeal, his conviction and sentence were upheld at a second trial; he was sentenced to three life terms and died while still incarcerated. Yablonski had opposed Boyle for some time, arguing for more democratic representation among the locals, and had run against him in a bitter presidency election of the UMWA earlier in December, which Boyle won. Yablonski charged that fraud had been committed, asking for a Department of Labor investigation, and also filing five lawsuits against the union on specific related civil charges.  On December 31, 1969, three killers shot Yablonski, his wife, Margaret, and his 25-year-old daughter, Charlotte, as they slept in the Yablonski home in Clarksville, Pennsylvania. The bodies were discovered on January 5, 1970, by Yablonski's eldest son, Kenneth. Boyle was found to have ordered Yablonski's death months earlier, on June 23, 1969, after a meeting with his opponent at UMWA headquarters had degenerated into a screaming match.[citation needed] In September 1969, UMWA executive council member Albert Pass received $20,000 from Boyle (who had embezzled the money from union funds) to hire assassins to kill Yablonski. Paul Gilly, an out-of-work house painter and son-in-law of a minor UMWA official, and two drifters, Aubran Martin and Claude Vealey, agreed to do the job. Pass arranged for the murder to be postponed until after the election, to avoid suspicion falling on Boyle.{in house shipping available}
