**Rare and Historic Group of Five Consecutively Numbered Winchester Centennial Model 1894-1994 Lever

Lot # 450 (Sale Order: 401 of 710)      

Five boxed Winchester Centennial Model 1894-1994 Lever Action Carbines with consecutive serial nos. 6117317-6117321, .30-30 caliber, 20-inch barrels with hooded front sights and elevation rear sights. Blued finish. Right side of frames marked: 1894-1994. Checkered walnut stocks. Shotgun butts. All contained in their original factory boxes. Sold together with partial box of original Winchester Super-X 150 grain cartridges , purchased for use in the execution [missing the 4 cartridges used in the execution] and another partial box of Federal Classic .30-30 blanks [four remaining]. Sold together with actual bullet fragments removed from the body [with Sheriff's office notations] and extensive provenance file, documenting the sanguinary history of the carbines, including copies of the original Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office coroner's and Medical Examiner's detailed post mortem reports on John Albert Taylor; copy of the Judgment and Sentence of Death; evidence form citing description of subject's clothing and death bullet fragments; copies of the Sheriff's Department weapons record listing the serial numbers of the subject firearms and period news clippings on the crimes of the subject, the trial and execution. One article actually pictures one of the subject firearms and relates the duties and actions of the assigned firing squads. A rare and historic offering.
Condition: All are excellent to mint, having been fired only a few times. Boxes with slight wear to corners.
Notes: According to the accompanying documents, the consignor served in 1995 as the Captain of the Special Operations Division, Sheriff's Department, Salt Lake County, Utah. This department, having specific experience with SWAT teams and sniper teams, was assigned the duty of training the execution firing squad for the State of Utah. Serial number 1456685; .32 Winchester Special. 20-inch barrel; blued finish; standard markings; buckhorn leaf rear sight; hooded bead front sight, deluxe wood stock and forend; composite buttplate; sling eyes.
Condition: Very Good. Metal retains approximately 90-95% finish with numerous handling marks on barrel and magazine tube, wear to highpoints of receiver; some slight spotting. Stock showing handling marks with some impressions.

*Engraved and Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Sporting Rifle, with Carved and Checker

Lot # 453 (Sale Order: 404 of 710)      

Serial no. 66256, .30 U.S. Model 1903 caliber, 24-inch round barrel with standard markings, flush gold-inlaid barrel band at breech, accompanied by scroll engraving; open sporting rear sight with ivory bead front sight on steel blade dovetailed on ramp. Engraved frame with gold-inlaid borders front and rear; bear panel scenes on left side of frame; muskox panel scene on right side of frame; engraved cocking lever and hammer. Blued, with case-hardened hammer. Select oil-finished deluxe walnut stocks checkered and carved in style D, with checkered hard rubber buttplate.
Condition: Excellent as reconfigured. 97% blue and 95% case-hardening, minor fading and patina; stocks with light nicks and storage marks. Rear sight repositioned, original holes plugged and barrel partially refinished. Rifle believed to have been used by the Winchester factory as a display piece. John T. Amber.

Composite U.S.Model 1897 Winchester Slide Action Trench Gun, with Leather Sling and Bayonet

Lot # 455 (Sale Order: 406 of 710)      

Serial no. 6867766, 12-gauge, 20-inch cylinder choke barrel, blued finish; U.S. and Ordnance bomb motif stamped on right side of frame. Ventilated rib. Model 1917 bayonet and leather scabbard. Bayonet with 17-inch unsharpened blade, ricasso marked REMINGTON[circle] 1917. Reverse with Ordnance bomb, Eagle head and numeral 21.
Condition: Very good. 75% blue, wear; buttstock cleaned and a possible replacement. Ventilated rib may be a later replacement. Sling: Very Good with scattered light cracking and verdigris. Bayonet: Very Good with pitting at ricasso and scattered staining. Scabbard Very Good with scattered light scratches and dark patina.

Serial no. 354224, 12 gauge, 2 3/4-inch chamber. 20-inch barrel with ventilated barrel guard and bayonet lug stamped: 7311175. Blued finish. Left side of frame marked with flaming bomb and U.S. Oiled walnut stocks with pistolgrip and inspector cartouche G.H.D. Sling mount.
Condition: Very good as partially refinished. Retaining approximately 70-75% blued finish, the frame showing evidence of refinishing, the remaining areas with scattered wear and patina. Magazine tube with slide wear. Wood excellent with light wear to fore-end grip. Front sling ring missing.

*12 Gauge Custom Engraved Winchester Model 12 Trap Slide Action Shtogun Two Barrel Set.

Serial no. 398057. 12 gauge. 29 3/4-inch barrels with solid ribs and fore-end. Custom engraved reblued slide action. Action and barrels engraved in Winchester Number 6 style pattern with bold foliate scroll and game scenes: Right side: Four ducks in flight over marsh. Left side: Two pointers flushing a grouse. Finely checkered straight grip stock of well figured crotch-grained walnut. Ebony diamond inserts at grip. Silver's type recoil pad. Finely checkered fore-ends for each barrel.
Condition: Excellent, as upgraded and partially redone. Metal shows 95- 97% reblued finish with losses to magazine tube. Bright bores. Wood shows handling marks and some dulling to the finish [Black Diamond].

Unique and Attractive Unmarked American Hand-Forged Bowie Knife

Lot # 458 (Sale Order: 409 of 710)      

7 3/4-inch unmarked hand-forged clip-point blade with deep single blood channel on left side of blade. 12 1/2-inches overall. Diamond-shaped steel crossguard. Hand-checkered bone gripscales with three copper rivets. Inlaid pewter bands and pommel cap. No scabbard. Probably of Texas origin, reportedly found in 1942 in a San Antonio pawnshop by a soldier stationed there.
Condition: Excellent with light age patina and minor spotting. Grip with mellow age patina.

Possibly Apache, with pointed toes, with inset tongues edged in an asymmetrical beaded design of cobalt blue and white diagonal stripes and a bisected band on the right foot, the left foot wtih a negative beaded design of white squares floating on a green beaded ground and connected white squares against a green ground opposite, the tongues, ankles, and trailing fringe colored with red ochre (possibly enhanced at a later date).
Condition: Very good.

The bust portrait of subject dressed in suit with Wild West Show bandana and depicted with shoulder length hair. Obverse of photograph inscribed at top: "Bill Grover". Gilt maker's mark at bottom reading: The Photographic Co., Ltd. 16 & 17, Poultry. E.C./and/ 58, Pall Mall,W./also/88 Kings Road, Brighton. Reverse inscribed: Bill/To/Mother/Buffalo Bill.
Condition: Fair to good. Image faded and lightly foxed. Chips present at two corners and scattered wear overall with minor staining to back.
Notes: Bill Grover was the husband of Gertrude Welsh, otherwise known as "Miss Birdie Grover". They were known to have worked at one time with Wild West Show promoter "Mexican Joe" .

Top of photo with penciled inscription reading: Gertrude Welsh/With Uncle Bill Cody [a non-genealogical reference]/Buffalo Bill. Maker's label at bottom reading: Otto J. Frank,/ S.W. Cor. 125th St. , & 3rd Ave./New York. Reverse with ink and pencil inscription reading: Anna E. Welsh/Property of [arrow pointing to Anna Welsh's name]/This is Gertrude Welsh.
Condition: Very good. Minor fading to image but still clear. Minor age discoloration to card and light wear to corners. A scarce image with professional reference to William F. Cody, for whom she worked for during this period. Welsh was not a blood relative of Cody.

Bottom of photograph with printed legend: MISS BIRDIE GROVER, THE RIFLE SHOT WITH MEXICAN JOE/Nedrington/Copyright/29, Bold Street/Liverpool. Reverse with inked inscription reading: "Ollie- Sister to Olive Branch Welsh (Mrs D.L. Gray}
Condition: Fair to good. Showing heavy fading and minor soiling to front. Bumps to corners; reverse with light soiling.
Notes: This photo provides the information that Gertrude Welsh was professionally known as Miss Birdie Grover [wife of Bill Grover] and that she was a marksman or trick-shot with "Mexican Joe" who at one time owned or operated a Wild West Show and toured Great Britain, perhaps as a sub contractor under Buffalo Bill Cody.

The exterior photograph of a group of Arabian performers, depicted in ethnic costumes with three horses in background with a crescent flag visible. Scene appears to be a fairgrounds or performing arena. This was a mounted troupe associated with a Wild West Show, probably part of the International Congress of Rough Riders [note same photographer as other Wild West Show photos in series]. Bottom of photo with maker's mark: Stacy/5th Ave. Brooklyn, N.Y. Reverse inscribed: "Anna E. Welsh". Photo worthy of further research.
Condition: Very good. Minor fading and foxing. Back with minor staining.
