ENGRAVED BOTTOM METAL. Cal. 30-06. S# 1382. The 24" star gauge Springfield bbl. has been recontoured at the rear with cal. engraved. Bbl. is fitted with sleeved on sling eye & front ramp holding small silver bead with sight protector. Star gauge numbers are on bottom of bbl., and matching assembly numbers "543" are on the bbl. & receiver ring (wood removed). Top of the bbl . is engraved "No 1380 Griffin & Howe, Inc. New York". Springfield 1903 action with serial number removed is fitted with a bolt marked "NS", which is stamped with assembly numbers matching both bbl. & action. Action is fitted with a Lyman 48 receiver sight. Bolt has two panel-checkered knobs. Flag safety is marked "READY" and "SAFE". Receiver ring is engraved with a simple heraldic US eagle, and a shield is on the bolt root. Original military trigger is retained. Unnumbered bottom metal is case-hardened and engraved with full coverage, a well-cut, shaded small scroll accented by bursts of high relief renderings of rose blossoms, essentially a Kornbarth signature. This fine scroll & rose surround an ovate central scene on the floorplate of a bull & cow moose wading in a swamp with large trees in the background. Stock of lightly figured, light-colored European walnut measures 13 1/4" over engraved & checkered steel buttplate with trap. Steel gripcap is engraved, matching the bottom metal with a small scroll surrounding a depiction of a grouse perched on a branch. Stock also features a shadowline right-hand cheekpiece with a secondary bead, point pattern checkering at the grip & around the forend, horn forend tip, a sling eye, & vacant gold oval on the toeline. CONDITION: bbl. and action retaining 90% custom rust blue. Case-hardening of the bottom metal faded to silver. Stock retains nearly all of a very shiny refinish with some bumps & scratches. Checkering has been cleaned up. Action & bbl. channel glass bedded. Bore is bright & shiny, with some very slight erosion at the throat. Mechanically fine. (22-2276/MGM). CURIO. $6,000-9,000.
