The left side of the bbl. is marked "COLT. D.A. 38", with Colt's mfg. information above "PATENTED AUG.5.1884 NOV.6.88. MAR.5.95." marked across the top, and "P4525" followed by an "R.A.C." Right side of frame is engraved "Prest to/ Capt. J.C. HEGARTY/ 41st U.S.V./ By/ Schutte & Abbes/ & employees of/ Cutting Dept./ Nov. 18th 99.", indicating presentation to John C. Hegarty, whom served as the Captain of the 41st United States Volunteer Regiment during the Philippine Insurrection. Metal components exhibit a lustrous blue finish, with the trigger and hammer retaining remnants of their original nitre blue finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered black hard rubber grips marked "COLT" at the top of the panels. Bottom of right grip panel is carved "I.W.H.". Matching assembly number "231" is marked on the frame, cyl. crane, and cyl. latch. Interior of grip panels are inscribed "2". CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, with scattered areas of light pitting and light surface oxidation overall. Mirror bore, exhibiting small spots of mild to moderate pitting towards the muzzle and retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips exhibit some scattered marks from handling and storage, but are otherwise very good. Holster remains malleable, exhibiting age related cracking overall, with scattered spots of crazing. An interesting example of a Colt New Navy Commercial revolver presented to John C. Hegarty, with a very nice assortment of provenance. PROVENANCE: from the Lifelong Collection of Robert "Mike" Bricker. (24-1049/MLW). CURIO. $800-1,400.
