This Luftwaffe officer's sword is an early-production example, notable for its likely nickel-silver cruciform hilt, rather than the later-war aluminum construction, based on the rich dark patina present and the existence of a Luftwaffe waffenamt stamp on the blade. The hilt features feathered quillons with swastika emblems in circular medallions, a prominent disc pommel bearing an additional swastika, and a dark blue leather-wrapped grip with tight, double-twisted silver wire (some oxidation and minor wear visible). The blade is in amazing condition and is extremtly well weighted. A really fine example of an early production Luftwaffe Officer's sword with all the maker marks a collector could desire! The blade is a bright, nickel-plated example with a hexagonal-section and central fuller, measuring 28 1/4" in length. It is maker marked with the crowned seated king and sword logo of SMF Solingen, and includes a Luftwaffe acceptance stamp (waffenamt), (Adler und Nummer für Waffenwerk- stoffabnahme (Eagle and Number for Weapon Material Acceptance) in 5 sizes: 22, 4, 6, 8 u. 10 mm) - which is a strong indicator of early official issue. Some scattered marks are present on the blade from service wear, but the overall condition remains solid. The original blue leather washer is still intact. The matching scabbard is wrapped in blue leather with patinated German silver fittings and original belt hanger. It shows honest age with light scuffing and minor blemishes but retains excellent form. The pommel is slightly loose, as often encountered with these early examples. Overall length of the sword is approximately 35 1/2 inches. Luftwaffe parade swords were introduced in 1937 and served primarily as dress sidearms for officers in the German air force. Beyond their practical function, they symbolized rank, prestige, and allegiance to the Luftwaffe’s elite identity. Early examples such as this, with nickel-silver fittings, detailed emblems, and official markings, are far more desirable among collectors due to their quality and scarcity. Provenance: Acquired from a longtime French-American militaria collector and museum curator with a specialty in WWII German edged weapons.
