This authentic plug bayonet dates to the American Revolutionary War period or slightly earlier and could have been produced either in England or Colonial America. It features a thick, double-edged blade fitted into a wooden hilt with an iron crossguard. The form suggests it was intended for close combat, either mounted on a musket or carried independently as a thrusting weapon. This example has an extremely unique upturned quillion sword catcher design! Wear and patina are consistent with 18th-century field use. Plug bayonets were among the earliest attempts to transform firearms into melee weapons, and although largely replaced by socket bayonets in formal military units, they continued to see use in irregular forces and militias. In America, many fighters made use of whatever equipment was available, including older European arms, especially during the French and Indian War and into the Revolutionary War. This bayonet may have seen use by Loyalist, Patriot, or British-aligned forces in early North American conflicts.
