This U.S. Springfield Model 1855 muzzleloading percussion rifled musket is hand inscribed "83 ILL" (83rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry) on the left side of the rear stock (appears to be U.S. Civil War period correct). Other markings include "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" & "1860" on the lockplate; U.S. Eagle crest/ oak leaves on the Maynard primer door; "VP"/ Eagle head on the left side of the barrel breech; "U.S." on the top of the buttplate and "U" on the front & rear barrel bands. SPECS: Smooth hardwood stock with brass nose cap (without patchbox), 40" rifled barrel, long-range rear sight graduated to 800 yards, iron-blade front sight, metal ramrod and comes with a period correct socket bayonet with faint markings (stamps) - see photos. CONDITION: This U.S. Civil War musket is showing age & wear, the bore has lost most of the rifling, but appears to be good without deep pitting and appears to be in good working order. 83rd ILLINOIS REGIMENT - The 83rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was organized in Monmouth, Illinois, and mustered into Federal service on August 21, 1862. Commanding the regiment was Colonel Abner C. Harding, who was promoted to Brigadier General in 1863, and went on to serve as a U.S. Representative from 1865-1869. The 83rd regiment was heavily engaged on February 3, 1863, at Fort Donelson when it repulsed an attack by 8,000 Confederate troops under Joseph Wheeler and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Future lawman Virgil Earp served as a private in the regiment. MODEL 1855 - With its Maynard tape priming system, the U.S. Model 1855 percussion rifle-musket was state-of-the-art when adopted by the U.S. Army in 1856. It was the standard longarm of regular Army forces at the start of the Civil War and was used by both sides. It was the first U.S. regulation arm to use the .58-cal. hollow-base Minie bullet. The Maynard tape primer system was an attempt at improving the percussion cap system that had been previously developed. Instead of using individual caps which had to be placed for every shot, the Maynard system used a tape which was automatically fed every time the hammer was cocked, similar to the way a modern child's cap gun works. While the powder and Minie ball still had to be loaded conventionally, the tape system was designed to automate the placing of the percussion cap and therefore speed up the overall rate of fire of the weapon. The weapon could also be primed in the usual way with standard percussion caps if the tape was unavailable. In the field, the Maynard tape primer proved to be unreliable. Tests conducted between 1859 and 1860 found that half of the primers misfired and also reported that the tape primer springs did not feed well. Ultimately, the United States Army Ordnance Department abandoned the Maynard system and went back to the standard percussion lock which led to the Model 1861. FREE SHIPPING & NO PROCESSING FEES.
