This WWII British service rifle is marked: "NO.4 MKI" on the left side of the receiver, "M.1944/ BT/19440" (ROF Maltby factory serial number block) on the left side of the grip band, "61" stenciled with paint on the left side of the stock, "63" in white paint under the rear stock, and numerous proof stamps throughout. SPECS: 25" Barrel, brass metal buttplate, smooth walnut stock/ handguard with rear cleaning kit compartment (does not include kit), MKII adjustable folding rear sight with peep, "FI .03" front dovetail sight with ears, sling rings, bayonet lugs at the muzzle and clip fed internal magazine. CONDITION: This rifle is showing battle wear, but still retains an excellent sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: The Lee–Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine-fed repeating rifle that served as the main firearm of the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century. The Lee–Enfield was the standard issue weapon to rifle companies of the British Army, colonial armies (such as India and parts of Africa), and other Commonwealth nations in both the First and Second World Wars. During the course of the Second World War, the No. 4 rifle was simplified for mass production with the creation of the No. 4 Mk I in 1942, with the bolt release catch replaced by a simpler notch on the bolt track of the rifle's receiver. In the years after the Second World War, the British produced the No. 4 Mk 2 rifle, a refined and improved No. 4 rifle with the trigger hung forward from the butt collar and not from the trigger guard, beech wood stocks with original design reinforcing strap and brass "gunmetal" buttplates.
