Colonel, then Captain, Michael John "Bat" Masterson, was assigned to the 602nd Spec Ops Squadron, ACW Spec Ops Wing of the 7th Air Force during the Vietnam War. Masterson, call sign "Firefly 26", was a A-1 Skyraider pilot that went MIA while over Laos. On October 13, 1968, Firefly 26 was flying a night mission over Ban Ban, Laos when his A-1 Skyraider had a gyro-indicator malfunction, causing him to experience Vertigo. He radioed his Wingman and informed him that he was bailing out, moments later, his plane crashed into the trees below. That was the last moment anyone ever head from Bat Masterson. In 2005, members of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) located the crash site and found the remains of Masterson, 37 years after his last transmission. His remains were repatriated in 2006 by the Vietnamese Government and he is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
