Robert Michael Lurie Sr. was born November 21, 1921, in Englewood, New Jersey. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, entered the Naval Aviation Pilot Program, and earned his Gold Aviator Wings as a Master Technical Sergeant. During WWII, he flew over 80 missions in the Pacific Theater. Though granted a commission, he later reverted to Master Sergeant to maintain his flight status after the war. Before the Korean War, then-Major Marion Carl selected Lurie as a jet pilot in the Marine Corps' first jet squadron, VMF-122. When the war began, he deployed with VMF-311, the Marine Corps' first jet combat squadron, and flew the F9F-2 Panther in 116 combat missions. After the war, he became a VIP Aircraft Commander, and transported U.S. and foreign government officials to more than 50 countries. Alongside Col. Luther S. Moore, he piloted the first U.S. Marine Corps airplane over the North Pole. During the Vietnam War (third combat tour across three wars) Lurie flew over 2,000 hours in the R4D-8 and UH-1E Gunship over the course of 25 months. Notably, he was able to fly with his son, Robert Lurie Jr., in VMO-2, before his son was KIA on July 2, 1968. Master Gunnery Sergeant Lurie, concluded his Marine Corps career as the Commandant’s VIP pilot, retired in 1973 alongside the last three active Naval Aviation Pilots (NAPs) in the Marine Corps. Over his career, Laurie Sr accumulated over 17,000 flight hours across 30 different aircraft and received the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Army and Navy Commendation Medals, five Air Medals, the Purple Heart, WWII Victory, Korean Service and the Vietnam Campaign medals. After retirement, Lurie remained in aviation, worked as Chief Pilot, Vice President, and Director of Flight Operations for an international corporation, and added another 10,000+ flight hours to his record. He retired in 1996 and passed away on September 20, 2009, in Havelock, North Carolina. He is buried at the Marine Corps Air Station Cemetery in Havelock.
