MARKINGS: Breech-Block - "U.S./ MODEL/ 1873", Lock Plate - Eagle/Shield Motif & "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1883", Buttplate - "U.S.", Left Side Of Barrel At The Breech - "VP" & Eagle Head, Top Of The Barrel At The Breech - "A" and Barrel Bands - "U". SPECS: 32 5/8" Barrel, adjustable folding tangent rear sight, fixed blade front sight, smooth hardwood stock, curved metal buttplate, metal rod and sling rings. CONDITION: This gun is good condition for its age with some wear & light surface pitting, has a good bore with sharp rifling & very light pitting and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: The Springfield Model 1873 was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army and was manufactured from 1873 - 1892. The Model 1873 was the fifth variation of the Allin Trapdoor design and was named for its hinged breechblock which opened like a trapdoor. The infantry rifle model featured a 32 5/8" barrel while the cavalry carbine used a 22" barrel. It was superseded by an improved model, the Springfield Model 1884.
