Antique Marlin-Ballard No. 5 Pacific Heavy-Barrel Breechloading Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .38 CF cal., 28" heavy (perhaps No. 4) octagonal barrel with buckhorn-style sights is unmarked. Long receiver is marked "Marlin Fire Arms Co. New Haven, CT, U.S.A." over "Ballard's Patent Nov. 6, 1861" at left, has ring-type lever (distinctive to the Pacific model) that when lowered drops down the breechblock for loading, auto-extraction. Two screw-filled holes are at upper tang (likely for tang sight, now not present). Double set triggers. Walnut forend has a curved pewter nose cap, the matching straight buttstock a similar curved pewter "collar" at juncture with frame, and a steel crescent buttplate. Made ca. 1881-91. Condition is very good, retaining 80% thinning barrel blue, silvered receiver, smooth metal, fine edges and markings. Pewter with a dull aged tone. Barrel has filled dovetails where ramrod ferrules once were, nose cap has a filled rod hole. Stocks are sound showing typical frontier use, the buttstock with secure full-length cracks (pewter nose cap and collar are likely period repairs). Forend has a 6" crack on the right side. Action is smooth, triggers work as designed, bright bore shows light frosting and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)**
