Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903 .22 Caliber Hoffer-Thompson Bolt Action Gallery Practice Rifle with Cartridge Adapters

Manufactured in 1913 as one of roughly 15,525 Model 1903 Gallery Practice bolt action rifles manufactured by the U.S. Springfield Armory c. 1906-1921. These gallery practice rifles were intended for target practice on indoor ranges and externally configured the same as the standard M1903 service rifles, with the exception of a .22 caliber barrel and the use of Hoffer-Thompson .22 Short chamber/cartridge adaptors shaped after the profile of a .30-06 Springfield cartridge in order to be fed through the standard box magazine and stripper clips. Many were destroyed after the end of World War I making surviving examples comparatively scarce today. Features a fixed blade front sight and folding latter rear sight (without volley notch), "S A/flaming bomb/11-13" marked barrel, "22" marked on the receiver bridge, "I 5" straight-handle bolt, a replacement "N.R.A." marked trigger housing (from a N.R.A. Sales M1903 rifle), and "H" marked bayonet lug. Fitted with a "high-hump' profile walnut handguard and a 'S' profile grasping groove walnut stock without recoil bolts, stamped with a boxed "J.F.C." (J. F. Coyle) inspector stamp on the left of the wrist, and fitted with a checkered trapdoor steel buttplate. Includes five Hoffer-Thompson .22 Short chamber/cartridge adaptors, a "K" marked Swedish pattern stripper clip, and informational display card, and a generic nylon soft case.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very good, retaining 30% plus original blue finish with scattered light edge wear, thinning on the balance with scattered visible grey and brown patinas, scattered minor patches of visible spotting/freckling, and some light handling marks. The stock is also very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with numerous scattered minor handling marks and a clear inspector stamp. Mechanically excellent. Hoffer-Thompson .22 Short chamber/cartridge adapters are fine with some minor pitting.
