This original U.S. Army M1917 trench knife is a classic World War I combat weapon, featuring a 9.25-inch tri-edged steel blade designed for deep puncture and rigidity during close-quarters trench warfare. The steel knuckle-guard D-handle includes seven pronounced pyramid-shaped studs for striking, all integrated into a one-piece guard that extends into the pommel. The wood grip remains intact with wear from age, and the guard is clearly stamped: "U.S. L.F. & C. 1917", confirming manufacture by Landers, Frary & Clark of New Britain, Connecticut. This example is missing its original scabbard but remains structurally sound and historically compelling. Total length is approximately 14 inches. The M1917 trench knife was the first U.S.-issued combat knife of its kind, created to meet the brutal demands of trench warfare during the First World War. Designed after French and British models, it prioritized stabbing efficiency and hand protection, giving American troops a practical edge in brutal close combat. The triangular blade was not sharpened but designed to puncture thick uniforms and even bone, while the studded guard turned the knife into a formidable blunt-force weapon. Landers, Frary & Clark was one of the key U.S. manufacturers contracted to produce these weapons in 1917, known for their quality control and durable designs. M1917 trench knives have become iconic symbols of WWI, representing the gritty, up-close nature of early modern warfare. Surviving examples, especially clearly marked ones like this, are increasingly scarce and highly prized among collectors of military edged weapons and American combat history!
