He joined the US Army Air Corps in 1939 as a 612 Airplane Armorer-Gunner and was stationed in the Philippines assigned to the 28th Sector/Squadron Special Services Division Southwest Pacific Theater. He was captured by the invading Japanese Army and was later sent to the Tokyo Dispatch Camp #5-Kawasaki Tokyo Bay Area 35-139. While there, Callahan was the 2nd highest ranking American there, serving as the executive for the camp. He was in charge of food distribution and overall care of the men. He even learned some Japanese so that he could more effectively communicate with his captors. Over the span of 41 months as a POW, Callahan effectively managed several hundred men and did his best to keep morale up despite the horrid conditions. He kept several notebooks with records of fellow POW's and a few personal accounts. In 1945, the camp was liberated after the Japanese surrendered. For his actions, he was awarded the Bronze Star (citation included). A year later, Callahan entered Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Transferring over to the the newly created US Air Force, Callahan joined the USAF Office of Special Investigations where he would serve until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 1960's. He passed away on April 16, 1983 in Bossier City, Louisiana from Cardiorespiratory Failure.
