BRM (British Racing Motors) 'Motor Show' Display Sign

Lot # a3 (Sale Order: 3 of 207)      

One of only two produced, an original large format circular alloy display sign, used by Rubery Owen to dress their BRM exhibition stand at the 1966 'Racing Car Show' held at Olympia, London. The sign is constructed of hand sign-written aluminium sheet, with rolled edges. The size is - 29" / 74cm. The sign is market fresh, having been in long term storage - the visible shaded marks can be cleaned and are the effect of the sign being stored in greased paper for preservation. The sign retains a good gloss and is very striking, however it has suffered some light scratches and marks over the years.BRM only secured one victory in 1966, at the hands of Jackie Stewart at the Monaco GP.

The Jaguar D-Type' by Pritchard, Palawan Press

The book includes the story of the design and development of the D-type, as well as a racing history of both the Works cars and those belonging to private owners. The focus is on the D-type, but naturally included is the XK-SS, a road-legal sports car produced after Jaguar retired from racing, by converting 16 of the unsold, unfinished D-types. As is customary for Palawan editions, there is an extensive section setting out the history, both written and photographic, of every D-type made. Appendices include technical descriptions, road tests and biographies of the works drivers and the technical staff involved in the development and racing of the D-type. Comprising 420 pages, with over 500 photographs, the book measures 290 x 340mm and is exquisitely designed and presented in two limited editions. Limited to just 250 copies, numbered 1 - 250 (this example numbered 179), bound in green buckram cloth, silkscreened and silver foil blocked on the front and spine, and encased in a green buckram cloth slipcase with silver foil blocking.This clothbound edition is now sold out.

A Small Archive of Mercedes-Benz Racing Photographs

A varied selection of pre and post war photographs, to include two folders of factory press photographs, within their original packaging, primarily large format - 68 in total, with models depicted including the 300 SLR, W125, W196 and many others. Together with a selection of small format photographs depicting Lang and Fitch (under the supervision of Neubauer) testing the No. 23 'streamliner'. Plus a large format album, containing a collection of large black/white silver gelatine photographs of the Mercedes-Benz W196 (in both of its body configurations); along side the drivers, team and Alfred Neubauer, in the pits at Rheims, 1954 and early technical photographs and press photographs of the same period. Printed in Italy in 1967, with Italian text throughout. Good visual condition, save for light fold lines. Approximately 145x105cm (poster). Elvis Presley and Mohammed Ali Signed Presentation

A large signed photographic presentation, features the famous image captured on February 14th 1972, depicting Presley pretending to box with Ali in his hotel room. Presley was a huge fan and had personally commissioned the rhinestone covered robe seen in the picture at a cost of $3000, which he had gifted to him earlier that evening. Below the main image is an original Elvis Presley publicity postcard, signed in blue ballpoint ink, together with a newspaper cutting, signed in black ink by Ali. Captioned, professionally framed and glazed. A very rare piece of memorabilia.

An Aviation Lot

Lot # a11 (Sale Order: 11 of 207)      

To include -1.An RAF 'Scramble Bell', with crown, dated 1940. The Bell is Ministry of Defence, 11 inch specification, with the correct 11 inch casting size at the top (the size is part of the casting not an engraving) - the top of the Bell also has a very small Foundry mark, that incorporates the MOD arrow, plus a large Ministry of Defence arrow to the inner. The Bell clapper is a replacement (to original MOD specification), as the original clapper was apparently lost during a house move long ago. The Nickel Plate is in excellent condition on the outside of the Bell but there is loss of plating to the inner Bell. The tone is high (for a sense of urgency) and will be immediately recognized by any one who is familiar with MOD Bells of the period. 2.A Barrage Balloon Ashtray.3.A Propeller Clock.4.An original press release photograph of RAF fighters under review by King George. 5.An RAF 'Escaping Society' car badge by Thomas Fattorini of Birmingham.

An Icarus Mascot, by Frederick Gordon Crosby, for Bentley Motors, 1920s

Lot # a16 (Sale Order: 16 of 207)      

A magnificent Icarus factory mascot, designed by Frederick Gordon Crosby, silver-plated bronze construction, commissioned by Walter Bentley for the W.O. Bentley Cricklewood London Factory cars of the 1920s, including the four and a half litre and six and a half litre variants. The mascot signed 'Gordon Crosby' to the side in the correct font that mimics his written signature. This piece was a result of a special commission from Bentley to find an alternative option to the winged B mascot. An example sold for £800 in 1980 at Sothebys Belgravia, London, a World Record Price at the time. See page 106, Automobilia by Gordon Gardiner & Alistair Morris. Mounted to a wooden display base and offered in very good original condition.

Bentley (Three Litre), as produced by AEL in the c1920s period, stamped by the maker & offered in good original condition, save for some scratches & tarnishing to the plating 3.A Backward inclined 'B' mascot, as fitted to 1930s Derby Bentley 3.5 litre and 4.25 litre cars of the period, chrome plated finish, part numbered beneath. Good condition.4.A modern polished numonic stainless steel Bentley Flying B Mascot on polished stainless steel radiator mount, fitted to a specially made wooden display base; the whole appears to be as new.

An Extremely Rare Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Mascot, 1911

A very good Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, manufactured for display on the 40/50HP six cylinder Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost automobile, this being the rarest type, reputedly produced for only six months back in 1911, having various correct period dating features including the hollow under base area & most importantly the words 'Rolls-Royce Limited 6th FEBRUARY 1911' around the base area, as opposed to all later Silver Ghost mascots which read 'Rolls-Royce Ltd FEB 1911'. This rare mascot features the signature of Charles Sykes across the top of the base area and no under-wing markings, which is correct on all pre-World War One examples. A stunning and impressive item of the very finest detail, silver plated finish on bronze base metal, original mounting stud and fittings, mounted to a period display base. The largest, most impressive and rarest of al Rolls-Royce mascots.

Minerva AL-Series 8-Litre Mascot and Badge

An impressive Minerva Goddess Head mascot for the eight cylinder AL-series Minerva cars of the late 1920s and early 1930s period, by the Flemish sculptor Pierre de Soete; (the AL being Minerva's finest automobile), the mascot signed P. de Soete to the side and numbered to the opposite side, exceptional attention to detail and finish, complete with the original fitted Minerva AL-series "MM" (Minerva Motors) scripted radiator cap, plated finish. Offered with a large nickel-plated/enamel Minerva motors lapel badge, again offered in excellent condition. (2)

To include -1.A rare & attractive Art-Deco accessory mascot, designed in the 1920s by Continental sculptor Casmir Brau. It depicts three galloping horses, similar to a design by Rene Lalique. Excellent condition, with signature and base markings.2.A rare Vauxhall Griffin solid bronze radiator mascot by Joseph Fray Limited of Birmingham, named and numbered to the base area, as fitted to Edwardian and vintage Vauxhall cars, including 30/98 and others. Very good condition, with some light wear to plating.

A Rare 'Aviator' Accessory Mascot by John Hassall

Lot # a25 (Sale Order: 25 of 207)      

A scarce accessory mascot of bronze construction, as produced c1917 - 1918, featuring a spring loaded flesh-coloured porcelain head, allowing the head and helmet to move. The two-blade propeller also rotates as the car proceeds along the road. An instantly recognisable mascot by the Comic Artist and Illustrator, John Hassall, also known for his Robert the Policeman Mascot (Bobby), and his comic postcards, etc. The Aviator sits upon his aeroplane, holding the joysticks, as he pilots his aircraft at speed. The side area is signed 'Hassall', offered in very good condition, save for a period minor crack to the lower section of the porcelain head.
