***Major Highlight*** (1842-1850) A. Bechtler 27 Grains, 21 Carat Plain Edge Kagin-24 Gold Dollar TO

Lot # 6014 (Sale Order: 2926 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** (1842-1850) A. Bechtler 27 Grains, 21 Carat Plain Edge Kagin-24 TOP POP! Gold Dollar $1 ms64 SEGS. A high-grade example of this Bechtler gold...more dollar issue, showing sharp definition and bright yellow-gold-Orange surfaces. his piece represents the Plain Edge, Kagin-24 variety, the more plentiful of the two edge types. The Reeded Edge variety, Kagin-25, is nearly uncollectible. The Bechtler family of North Carolina (later Georgia) struck gold coins using local ore in the 1830s and 1840s. They struck gold Dollar coins well before the U.S. Mint did, and the Mint may have looked to these coins for inspiration -- nhot so much for their simple design but as the model for a new, unanticipated denomination A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Major Highlight*** 1908-p Gold Indian Half Eagle $5 ms66 SEGS (fc)

Lot # 6030 (Sale Order: 2927 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** 1908-p Gold Indian Half Eagle $5 ms66 SEGS. The first-year-of-issue 1908 Indian five dollar was saved in greater numbers than following years...more, giving it a second reason for type collectors to chase nice examples. This Premium Gem is among the few nicest survivors, displaying bright mint luster over antique-gold surfaces that are free of marks in any of the prime focal areas. he strike is uniformly bold throughout both sides, another plus that collectors will appreciate.

Lot # 6074 (Sale Order: 2928 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** 1856-p Gold Liberty Quarter Eagle $2 1/2 ms65+ SEGS. he availability of this Philadelphia issue declines quickly in grades above MS62, and at...more the Gem level it is decidedly rare. This piece displays softly frosted orange-gold luster and outstanding visual appeal for the issue Despite a mintage of 384,240 quarter eagles at Philadelphia in 1856, few have survived in better Mint State grades, as the population figures indicate. ***Major Highlight*** 1838-p Small Stars Seated Liberty Dime Fortin-101 R-3 /FS-101 DDR TOP POP! 10c

Lot # 6234 (Sale Order: 2929 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** 1838-p Small Stars Fortin-101 R-3 /FS-101 DDR TOP POP! Seated Liberty Dime 10c ms66+ SEGS. The basic Liberty Seated design type made its debu...moret on the dime in 1837 with production of No Stars examples at the Philadelphia Mint. Despite the lovely cameo-like appearance of these first year examples, the Mint modified the Liberty Seated design in 1838 through the addition of 13 stars around the obverse periphery. (The 1838-O features the No Stars type.) The stars were individually punched into each working die. Of the 14 die marriages of this issue known to Gerry Fortin (seateddimevarieties.com), all but one were prepared using large-size star punches. The exception is Fortin-101, the small size of the stars leading some experts to speculate that the device punch used for this die was originally intended for the half dime series. The Philadelphia Mint's first delivery of 1838-dated dimes came on March 31 of that year and amounted to 30,000 coins. Although there is no evidence to support this theory, some numismatists assert that this delivery accounts for the entire mintage from the Fortin-101 Small Stars die pairing. Based on the number of examples extant, however, Bowers puts forth a more realistic estimate of 250,000 coins struck for this variety. In any event, the Small Stars variety constitutes a small percentage of the 1,992,500 dimes struck in 1838, and survivors are much scarcer than their Large Stars counterparts in all grades. In Mint State the 1838 Small Stars is rare. The present example is the second finest certified behind the NGC MS-68 * formerly in the Bob Simpson Collection. This is a glorious premium Gem that would serve as a highlight in any cabinet of Liberty Seated coinage or PCGS Registry Set.In addition to its desirability as the only Small Stars variety of the 1838 dime, Fortin-101 is a Doubled Die Reverse with doubling evident at the base of the letters O in ONE, D in DIME, and throughout the wreath A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Major Highlight*** 1869 Proof Three Cent Copper Nickel TOP POP! 3cn pr67+ dcam SEGS (fc)

Lot # 6290 (Sale Order: 2934 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** 1869 TOP POP! Three Cent Copper Nickel 3cn pr67+ dcam SEGS. his beautiful Superb Gem should be seen to be fully appreciated. Both sides exhib...moreit bold cameo contrast between satiny devices and deeply reflective fields. Delicate golden iridescence is seen on virtually pristine surfaces. The Proof mintage for the date is unknown but is probably similar to that of the Proof 1869 Shield nickel, which is estimated at 850 to 1,100 pieces. Of the survivors, few are as carefully preserved as the present specimen, and even fewer also display enough field-to-device contrast to warrant a Deep Cameo rating. Here is an important bidding opportunity for the advanced type or date collector to acquire a truly rare and attractive coin. ***Major Highlight*** 1925-p Peace Dollar TOP POP! $1 ms68 SEGS (fc)

Lot # 6354 (Sale Order: 2939 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** 1925-p TOP POP! Peace Dollar $1 ms68 SEGS. Fully struck with bountiful satin to softly frosted luster, this beautiful example also offers int...moreense silver-white brilliance to virtually pristine surfaces. The Peace dollar as a type is much rarer than its Morgan dollar predecessor of 1878 to 1921 in Superb Gem Uncirculated. Not only were far fewer Peace dollars produced, but poor striking quality, inferior luster and/or heavily abraded surfaces confine most Mint State survivors to lower grades through MS-65. Here, then, is a significant piece for the quality conscious bidder - a coin that would make an impressive addition to a specialized Peace dollar collection or another high grade type set. A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Major Highlight*** 1874 Proof Seated Half Dollar 50c pr65+ cam SEGS (fc)

Lot # 6582 (Sale Order: 2941 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** 1874 Seated Half Dollar 50c pr65+ cam SEGS. The strike is razor sharp throughout, the devices satiny in texture and contrasting nicely with ...moremirrored fields. Carefully preserved to uphold the coveted Gem+ grade, to see this coin is to admire it for both its technical quality and visual appeal. The weight of the half dollar was modified again in 1873 when the Act of February 12 mandated an increase from 12.44 grams to 12.50 grams. The Mint once again decided to add arrows to the obverse before and after the date for coins struck to the new weight standard. This second Arrows Liberty Seated half dollar type remained in production only in 1873 and 1874, after which the basic Motto type returned, albeit with the weight standard as mandated in 1873.The Arrows type of 1873 to 1874 is more challenging to locate than those of 1854 to 1855, at least in circulation strike format. Proofs of the later type are far easier to obtain in an absolute sense, as the Mint of the 1870s continued a trend begun in the late 1850s of respectable yearly production of Proofs to meet growing contemporary demand. The Proof 1873 Arrows and 1874 are of similar overall and condition rarity in today's market, both relatively obtainable in lower grades yet commanding a significant premium due to enhanced type collector pressure. At and above the Proof-65 level both issues are rare in an absolute sense and very rare from a market availability standpoint. The present specimen is one of the finest certified and will please even the most discerning numismatist. A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. ***Major Highlight*** ULTRA RARE! 1853 900 Thous $20 U.S. Assay Office ms63+ SEGS (fc)

Lot # 6622 (Sale Order: 2947 of 2954)

***Major Highlight*** ULTRA RARE! 1853 900 Thous $20 U.S. Assay Office ms63+ SEGS. A beautiful, conditionally rare example of this popular type that is sure to app...moreeal to high grade Territorial gold type collectors. Satiny in texture with handsome medium gold patina, both sides are fully defined with an exceptionally well executed strike. Predominantly smooth in appearance, fully Choice in quality, and destined for inclusion in an advanced gold cabinet. This is one of the most frequently encountered types in the privately minted California Gold Rush coinage series of the late 1840s and 1850s. The United States Assay Office of Gold under Curtis, Perry and Ward struck 2.5 million 900 THOUS $20 gold pieces from the beginning of March to the end of October, 1853. The coins were widely distributed, with many finding their way into circulation on the West Coast and others being shipped back to the Eastern United States as gold bullion. Thirty different dies were used to produce this high mintage issue, and they survived until destroyed by fires caused by the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. One of the nicest examples for the grade that we have ever handled, this coin will undoubtedly sell for a strong premium. The U.S. Assay Office gold pieces are normally included in the Territorial and private mint gold coinage of the early West, but in reality the pieces are neither Territorial nor private. The U.S. Assay Office was the forerunner of what would in 1854 become the San Francisco Mint, which began producing quarter eagles, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles in that year. When legislation was passed that required all Assay Office coinage to conform to the Mint Act of 1837, the effect was to have the older dies, with a listed fineness of 880 THOUS, repunched with 900 over the 880. All the pieces made by the U.S. Assay Office are of the 900 over 880 variety, but the undertype 880 fades over time. The 900 fine pieces were coined from March 1 to Oct. 30, 1853, with a total production of about 2.5 million pieces. Those dies, perhaps 30 in all, were destroyed in the San Francisco Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, which ironically left the San Francisco Mint standing amid the rubble of hundreds of other nearby buildings. A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
