Lot #76 of the 450 Masonic Tokens from The Walter O. Collection

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 14 of 583)

Lot #76 of the 450 Masonic Tokens from The Walter O. Collection. We Recently received a very Large Collection of 450 Masonic Tokens and coins. This collection was ...moreone man’s hobby for over 40 years. He collected each and every one with care and attention to detail and variety. Some of them are amazing and incredibly rare and highly sought by collectors and Masons. Here is a Brief Overview : Masonic coins often raise many questions for those looking to better understand the significance of the coins themselves as well as the symbolism represented in their imagery. In fraternal culture as a whole, symbolism has always been a significant part of these organizations’ identity, especially in Freemasonry, as Masonic coins are rich with symbolism, reflecting different events and characteristics of Freemasonry that give them the priceless value they hold. There are several varieties of masonic coins and tokens, and all tokens will fall into one of the following categories: a token celebrating a particular mason, lodge or event; an initiation token showing when a Brother was initiated, passed and raised; and finally the mark mason token (or penny) which signifies a pivotal part of a Mason’s initiation. Because symbolism was so important to fraternal culture, these small coins are rife with meaning. The most ubiquitous representation of the Masons was the letter "G" surrounded by a compass and square, representing the holy geometry of God. Some tokens feature the letters "H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S.," which means "Hiram the Widow's Son Sent to King Solomon," the biblical story that must be acted out to reach the third, or Master's Degree, in Freemasonry. Additionally, many contain either Apron and gloves: These symbols stand for living with a pure heart and to keep one’s hands clean. All-seeing eye: This symbol is designed to remind Masons that God and others always see their thoughts and actions. Ashlars: You may see rough and smooth ashlars on Masonic coins. They are to remind Masons of the contrast between man’s natural state and perfection and the Level: This symbol found on some Masonic coins reminds Masons that everyone is equal before God. We have broken the set up into groups of 5 Tokens in each lot. We have put 5 Lots per night over the 18 Nights of the Spring Auctions.

1898 Trans-Mississippi Expo Hk-283 So Called Dollar Grades Select AU

Lot # 38 (Sale Order: 24 of 583)

1898 Trans-Mississippi Expo Hk-283 So Called Dollar Grades Select AU. Up for Auction is an 1898 Trans- Mississippi Congress Expo token. The purpose of the Expo wa...mores "To display the products, manufactures and industries of the states and territories west of the Mississippi River." After the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 was a “revelation to the people of the nation" and "inspiration to leading men elsewhere to think of similar enterprises." Trans-Mississippi Congress, composed of representatives of western states, met annually; their Convention November, 1895, at Omaha selected that city as site; exposition company organized January, 1896. Financial panic of 1893 and droughts of 1894 and 1895 developed opposition and difficulties. However, funds raised by public subscription; state and county granted $100,000 each; Congress $250,000. After exposition closed, stockholders recovered 90% of "face value of stock," an unprecedented financial result. The Congress settled On a "plateau of ground," about 184 acres, in northeast section of city; now built over except for small park, Kountze Park and from June 1 to Oct. 31, 1898 with Attendance over 2,500,000; the congress took in over $1,750,000. Attending the expo when Spanish-American War broke out in April, of 1898, all national publicity was directed there. Confronted with both War and "stupor of discouragement and depression" pervading "all business and all peoples," many prospective exhibitors cancelled space. However, 40 states and territories (9 erected own buildings) and 10 foreign countries represented. "Separate" exhibitors exceeded 5,000; many Federal displays included Mint Exhibit. All the buildings were "of simple classic (Ionic) design, influenced by French Renaissance styling" without excess ornamentation, of ivory white and with uniform gray-green roofs. First "bold" use of incandescent bulbs as against arc lights of previous expositions. Mining exhibits, including process of extracting precious metals from ore, were "outstanding"; gold exhibit was "phenomenal," that from Alaska one containing specimen of every camp there.
