***Auction Highlight*** 1882 $5 Large Size National Currency "Brown Back" 2nd Charter Period James G

Lot # 424 (Sale Order: 353 of 720)

***Auction Highlight*** 1882 $5 Large Size National Currency "Brown Back" 2nd Charter Period James Garfield Fr-471 Grades vf++. 1882 $5 brown back bank notes this ...morebank issued. Each note has a portrait of James Garfield on the left hand side of the bill. These are very popular with collectors because they have different text layouts. The Congressional Act of July 12, 1882 created the Second Charter Period, the notes of which bear the designation, “Series of 1882.” The purpose of the Act was to make it possible for the banks chartered in 1863 and later to renew their charters at the end of their 20 year term, and also to enable newly organized banks to acquire an initial charter. New notes were designed to mark the transition and in all, three types of notes were issued during this period. These were first placed in circulation in 1882 by two classes of banks; by old banks originally chartered in 1863 and then re-chartered in 1882, and by new banks organized and chartered between July 12, 1882 and April 11, 1902. Brown backs were issued from 1882 to 1908, and would no doubt have continued until 1922 had it not been for passage of the Aldrich-Vreeland Act which resulted in the issuance of the second type

***Auction Highlight*** 1773 1/2p Virginia Halfpenny, Period TOP POP! Graded ms65 RD By SEGS. Although granted by it charter of 1606, Virginia did not pursue the r...moreight to a coinage until eve of the Revolution, when the Crown struck the only colony-specific issue ever fully authorized. Although the coins arrived in Virginia in a timely fashion, Treasurer Robert Carter Nicholas wouldn't release them for circulation until February 1775, when the royal proclamation permitting their circulation arrived.Virginia's 1773 halfpenny was used extensively in Williamsburg, where more than 120 specimens have been recovered from archaeological digs. Hundreds of the "Period" variety have been graded in Mint State, mostly in MS63 and MS64. Brown examples are the most common, followed fairly closely by Red-Brown examples, but full red examples are very scarce (if not rare).Obv. - Laura. bust of George III to r.Rev. - Virginia arms

PCGS 1863 US Fractional Currency 10c Second Issue fr-1247 Washington In Oval W/ 18-63 & 1 Surcharge

Lot # 436 (Sale Order: 365 of 720)

PCGS 1863 US Fractional Currency 10c Second Issue fr-1247 Washington In Oval W/ 18-63 & 1 Surcharge Graded cu63 PPQ By PCGS. Fractional or postage currency has a r...moreich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

***Auction Highlight*** J. Gault’s 1862 Encased Postage, EP8, TAKE AYERS PILLS & 3c Rose stamp exel

Lot # 442 (Sale Order: 370 of 720)

***Auction Highlight*** J. Gault’s 1862 Encased Postage, EP8, TAKE AYERS PILLS & 3c Rose stamp exel cond Graded au50 By SEGS. Up for Auction is One of The Civil Wa...morer’s Foremost Rarities, The “Encased Postage” coin. While not Technically a Coin, a Note or a Stamp, John Gault’s Encased Postage was king of currency For a Brief Year in 1862. When The Civil war Broke out in 1861, all of the “Hard Currency” quickly Disappeared. But people still needed to purchase a 3¢ loaf of bread, a 1¢ newspaper, a 5¢ quart of milk and countless other goods that required coins. And vendors had to make change when an item’s price was less than a nickel, a dime or a quarter. In some cities, businesses gave customers I.O.Us, private companies created “Civil War tokens” and paper money was cut into several pieces to represent a fraction of a dollar. Clever remedies for sure, but none that were widely used or accepted. All of this radically changed on July 17, 1862, when Congress decided to address the coinage shortage and passed a law that allowed postage stamps to satisfy debts of less than $5. People began to carry stamps in their purses and pockets and used them repeatedly for daily purchases. Vendors gladly accepted the stamps as payment. But all of this hand-to-hand usage quickly resulted in damaged stamps with denominations sometimes unrecognizable. The local post offices would not exchange damaged stamps for new ones, so a remedy was needed. John Gault, a New York entrepreneur, decided he had the best solution. On August 12, 1862, Gault obtained a patent for a “postage stamp case”, or as he named the item in a newspaper advertisement, the “New Metallic Currency. Gault didn’t sell the encased stamps to the public. Instead, he sold them to stores and businesses that needed “coinage” to make change for customers’ purchases. Gault’s profit came from the 20% markup over the face value of the stamp. To increase his potential profit, Gault’s second idea was to inscribe advertising on the back of the encased stamp. He would charge companies who purchased the metallic currency an additional 2¢ for each item. Encased stamps were widely accepted in the general commerce realm until later in 1862 when the government issued “fractional currency”. This legitimate, government-sanctioned currency quickly eliminated the coin shortage. Having no other value than the stamp, people tore apart the encasements of their metallic currency to remove the stamp to use as postage. Thus the scarcity of the 1862 encased stamps today. The Example being offered today is EP8, Large Ayer’s, TAKE AYER’S PILLS 3c Rose Colored Washington Stamp The case has a nice Patina, with original luster still remaining, WOW!, The Mica & Stamp are fully intactonly a slight crazing. The Stamp is Clear and the Case pleasing. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win Coin
