***Auction Highlight*** 1936-d San Diego Near Top POP! Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Graded ms67+ By SEGS. The issue commonly referred to as the San Diego Half Dollar was a...moreuthorized to mark the California-Pacific International Exposition. The commemorative coins were first issued in 1935 struck at the San Francisco Mint, and later in 1936 struck at the Denver Mint. The obverse design was based on elements of the California State Seal. Minerva is seated with a spear and shield bearing the word “Eureka”, a grizzly bear is to her left, a horn of plenty is to the right, and a ship and miner at work appear in the background. The reverse image includes two of the exposition buildings, the observation tower and the Sate of California building. The designer of the coin was Robert Aitken, best known for his design of the 1915-S Panama Pacific $50 Gold Piece. The full maximum authorized mintage of 250,000 pieces was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1935 and sales began at the price of $1 each. After slow initial sales, the exposition sought and received Congressional approval to send back 180,000 of the unsold coins to be melted and reminted with the 1936 date. The 1936-dated coins would be struck at the Denver Mint and offered for sale at $1.50 each. Meanwhile, a remaining quantity of the 1935-dated coins were offered at $3 each. Later, the cost of the 1936 coins were also raised to $3 each.Despite these efforts, sales progressed even more slowly. Eventually, 150,000 of the 1936 coins were sent back to the Mint for melting. After the entire convoluted process, total sales were 100,224 out of the 250,000 maximum authorized mintage. He served in the United States House of Representatives and Senate before becoming Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

***Auction Highlight*** 1796 BB-61, B-4 Draped Bust Dollar $1 Graded au53 By SEGS (fc)

Lot # 89 (Sale Order: 71 of 720)

***Auction Highlight*** 1796 BB-61, B-4 Draped Bust Dollar $1 Graded au53 By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH - Up for Auction is a superb 1796 Small Eagle Bust Dollar...more. Bowers Die State I. The 1796, BB-61 is rare in About Uncirculated or finer condition. The Bowers reference suggests no more than 30 pieces exist in any AU grade, and only about a dozen Mint State pieces are known. This example is remarkably well-defined with smooth, toned fields and nice mint luster that glows beneath the toning. Bands of slate-blue alternate with areas of tan-gold patina on the obverse, while the blue overtones are less prevalent on the still-lustrous reverse. Slight wear on Liberty's temple and the eagle's breast indicate minimal circulation. One other variety exists with the Small Date, Large Letters configuration -- the BB-64 die marriage -- but that reverse die failed early and only two or three examples are confirmed, making the BB-61 the sole 1796 die pair to represent the type. Superb eye appeal. I wish you luck in obtaining this great piece of American history. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
