Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 8 of 1791)

Group of 2 United States Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1986-1987 with 20 Coins Inside!. Group of 2 United State Mint Set from 1986-1987 included ...morea total of 20 coins. The 1986 Mint Set have the total mintage of 1,153,536 represented the lowest in more than twenty years. The ten coins included in the 1986 Mint Set have a face value of $1.82 and consist of the Philadelphia and Denver Mint versions of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Packaging for the set consisted of two cellophane packs, containing coins from each of the two mint facilities, placed with a certificate of authenticity, within an illustrated envelope. The envelope was colored white at the top and tan at the bottom, with red, white, and blue as a dividing line. Stylized printing indicated “United States Mint”, “1986 Uncirculated Coin Set”, “with D and P mint marks. The 1987 Mint Set experienced a surge in collector interest following lackluster sales of the past three years. The increased level of sales for the present set was attributable to the 1987 P&D Kennedy Half Dollars. The denomination was not struck for circulation during the year, making the annual mint set the only way to obtain the coins!!!. There were ten coins included in each 1987 Mint Set. This consisted of P&D Kennedy Half Dollars, P&D Washington Quarters, P&D Roosevelt Dimes, P&D Jefferson Nickels, and P&D Lincoln Cents. Each set also included mint tokens from Philadelphia and Denver. Envelopes for the mint set were brightened up from prior years, with white and red colors separated by a blue stripe. The US Treasury Department logo appears on the upper portion with “The United States Mint”, “1987 Uncirculated Coin Set”, and “with D and D mint marks” on the lower portion.

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 15 of 1791)

Similar situations would occur on a few other occasions and each of these sets carries a certain mystique. For what was long considered the final year of the series, the 1981 Susan B. Anthony Dollar was struck only for inclusion within the 1981 Uncirculated Mint Set. Besides the noted dollar coins, each set included circulation strike coins P&D Susan B.Anthony P&D Kennedy Half Dollars, P&D Washington Quarters, P&D Roosevelt Dimes, P&D Jefferson Nickels, and P&D Lincoln Cents. The six coins from the Philadelphia Mint were sealed within a plastic cellophane with a blue color on the side. The seven remaining coins from the Denver and San Francisco Mint were sealed within a separate cellophane with a red color. Placed between protective cardboard, the two cellophane packs were placed within a white envelope marked with the contents.
