1884 seated liberty dime love token initals, A.A Love Token Grades ng

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 11 of 1364)

1884 seated liberty dime love token initals, A.A Love Token Grades ng. Love tokens are coins that were engraved after the minting process was complete. Generally, ...morean artisan removed the words and images from the reverse, or sometimes from both the obverse and the reverse of a coin. Artisans ranging in skills from a high-quality craftsperson to a "do-it-yourselfer" then engraved or punched pictures, initials, and messages on the cleared area.Other times, the coin was left intact and the artisan engraved initials, dates, or pictures on the edges around the images of liberty or royalty. The coins became lucky charms, objects of art, and pieces of jewelry. The messages on the coins could be used as spiritual reminders, family documentation, or sentimental sweet nothings. It is believed that the love token originated in Great Britain as early as the 13th century with the practice of bending coins. When dealing with your favorite saint, in return for a favor, a coin was bent and a pledge was made. The bent coin, "a token of your pledge," became a physical reminder of your obligation.

Rex Liquors, Inc. 5c Company Scrip Grades ng

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 12 of 1364)

Rex Liquors, Inc. 5c Company Scrip Grades ng. In the United States, mining and logging camps were typically created, owned and operated by a single company. These ...morelocations, some quite remote, were often cash poor; even in ones that were not, workers paid in scrip had little choice but to purchase goods at a company store, as exchange into currency, if even available, would exhaust some of the value via the exchange fee. With this economic monopoly, the employer could place large markups on goods, making workers dependent on the company, thus enforcing employee "loyalty". While scrip was not exclusive to the coal industry, an estimated 75 percent of all scrip used was by coal companies in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Because of this, many derived nicknames for the type of currency originated in the Appalachian mining communities, such as "Flickers," "Clackers," and "Dugaloos."Tokens were made out of a variety of metals, including brass, copper, zinc, and nickel. There were additionally "compressed fibre" coins produced during World War II in an effort to conserve metals for wartime production.

Dobbins Electric Soap Token Grades ng

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 19 of 1364)

Dobbins Electric Soap Token Grades ng. This... token was issued in 1876 during the U. S. centennial to advertise Dobbins Electric Soap, a product of I. L. Cragin &...more Company in Philadelphia. This company, a soap manufacturer, capitalized on the public's fascination with electricity to market this product. In fact, the product (laundry soap) was formulated to be very alkaline to give it a bit of a 'sting' to live up to its name!! The obverse of this great token (with the French date 4 JUIL - 1776 ) fit into the nation's centennial celebration by featuring a design very similar to that of the Libertas Americana medal issued in Paris in 1782, using a concept from Benjamin Franklin.

1933 Herbert C. Hoover Token Grades ng

Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 21 of 1364)

1933 Herbert C. Hoover Token Grades ng. Herbert Clark Hoover (August 10, 1874 – October 20, 1964) was an American politician and engineer who served as the 31st pr...moreesident of the United States from 1929 to 1933 and a member of the Republican Party, holding office during the onset of the Great Depression. Before serving as president, Hoover led the Commission for Relief in Belgium, served as the director of the U.S. Food Administration, and served as the third U.S. secretary of commerce.Hoover was born to a Quaker family in West Branch, Iowa, but he grew up in Oregon. He took a position with a London-based mining company after graduating from Stanford University in 1895. After the outbreak of World War I, he became the head of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, an international relief organization that provided food to occupied Belgium. When the U.S. entered the war, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Hoover to lead the Food Administration, and Hoover became known as the country's "food czar". After the war, Hoover led the American Relief Administration, which provided food to the inhabitants of Central and Eastern Europe. Hoover's wartime service made him a favorite of many progressives, and he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in the 1920 presidential election.President Warren G. Harding appointed Hoover as Secretary of Commerce in 1920, and he continued to serve under President Calvin Coolidge after Harding died in 1923. Hoover was an unusually active and visible Cabinet member, becoming known as "Secretary of Commerce and Under-Secretary of all other departments". He was influential in the development of air travel and radio. He led the federal response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Hoover won the Republican nomination in the 1928 presidential election, and defeated Democratic candidate Al Smith in a landslide. In 1929 Hoover assumed the presidency during a period of widespread economic stability. However, during his first year in office, the stock market crashed, signaling the onset of the Great Depression. The Great Depression dominated Hoover's presidency and he responded by pursuing a series of economic policies in an attempt to lift the economy. Hoover staunchly opposed any intervention from the federal government in the US economy. In the midst of the economic crisis, Hoover was decisively defeated by Democratic nominee Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 presidential election. Hoover's retirement was over 31 years long, one of the longest presidential retirements. He authored numerous works and became increasingly conservative in retirement. He strongly criticized Roosevelt's foreign policy and New Deal domestic agenda. In the 1940s and 1950s, public opinion of Hoover improved largely due to his service in various assignments for presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, including chairing the influential Hoover Commission. In the end, Herbert Hoover is often regarded as a below-average U.S. president. Critical assessment of his presidency by historians and political scientists rank him as one of the worst presidents in US history.
