artist bio:
a painter, etcher, muralist, and sculptor, gottardo piazzoni was a highly prominent, active figure in the northern california art world in the early 20th century. Many of his paintings were plein-air, impressionist style california landscapes that were simple in composition and quiet in tone, reflective of his search for refuge from an increasingly mechanized society. He also created a number of paintings in the symbolist style that expressed an ideal, dreamlike world of muted, restful colors.

piazzoni was a teacher at the california school of fine art in san francisco from 1919 to 1935, and established in that city the piazzoni atelier d'art on sacramento street. One of his major public accomplishments was the painting of fourteen large murals on the grand staircase of the downtown san francisco public library. Completed in 1932, five of them depicted the 'sea', and five the 'land'.

he was born in intragna, switzerland to swiss-italian parents and got his early schooling in locarno, italy, where he was much impressed by local mural artists who decorated the churches of that city. In 1887, he emigrated to california with his mother to join his father who had established a dairy farm in carmel valley. He persuaded his parents to let him go to san francisco to get art training, and from 1891 to 1893, he took art studies at the san francisco school of design under arthur mathews and raymond yelland, and won a gold medal for drawing.

he then went to paris for three years to study at the academie julian with benjamin constant, henri martin, and jean-paul laurens and from 1896 to 1898, studied with jean-leon gerome at the ecole des beaux-arts. In paris, he shared studios with douglas tilden and granville redmond, with whom he would remain life-long friends in california.

returning to san francisco, he shared a studio for ten years with arthur putnam and was a member of numerous organizations including the bohemian club and the san francisco society of etchers. His first major solo exhibition was in april 1905 at the mechanics institute pavilion, and he made enough money to return to europe, this time with his bride, beatrice del mue, and arthur putnam and his wife. The couples traveled for the next two years through italy, france, and switzerland.

in 1907, the piazzoni's returned to san francisco to deal with his studio that had been destroyed by fire. Relocating from sacramento street to presidio avenue, he began the first of his many mural commissions that reflected his commitment to the integration of art and architecture. He also gave studio classes, conducted plein-air painting excursions, traveled extensively in california for landscape subjects, began a series of monotypes, and took on teaching responsibilities at csfa.

piazzoni died at his home in carmel valley, and in 1959, the california historical society held a retrospective of his work....more

mickey mantle's restaurant background:
the restaurant was named after the famous yankees center fielder, and, before he died in 1995, mantle was often spotted inside, where he would eat, drink and provide free autographs for customers. The restaurant was a connection to a very special, mythical era when new york was the capital of baseball and was next to the st. Mortiz hotel, now the ritz-carlton, where mantle lived while he was in new york city.

the restaurant was decorated with sports memorabilia and a mural of old yankee stadium.

FRANZ BERGMAN COLD PAINTED BRONZE RUNNING MOOR AUSTRIAN

Lot # 876 (Sale Order: 37 of 366)

Estimate: $1,912 - $2,475 franz bergman cold painted bronze running moor austrian early 20th century cold painted bronze figure by franz bergman 'running moor', impressed, geschutzt 4687, holding spear or staff in one hand, wearing flowing drapery and breeches, an embroidered waistcoat and tasseled fez, on a naturalistic base. With great color and high relief, this sculpture has an impressive weighty feel in the hands would make a great gift or addition to any fine collection. Details: - size: 10-1/2 in. Height. - weight: 3lbs 11oz. - condition: minor wear commensurate with age, overall excellent condition details: franz xaver bergman (or franz xaver bergmann) (1861–1936) was the owner of a viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze oriental, erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Bergmann was noted for his detailed and colorful work. He signed with either a letter 'b' in an urn-shaped cartouche or 'nam greb' – 'bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father, franz bergmann (1838–1894), was a professional chaser from gablonz who came to vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. Franz xaver bergmann inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his father's workshop. Bergmann is often incorrectly described as a sculptor but he was not; he was a foundry owner. His workshops employed, on a temporary basis, many anonymous sculptors. Bruno zach employed bergmann to edit and cast some of his works, with some of the more erotic ones being signed as 'prof. Tuch', a pseudonym used by zach. At the turn of the 19th century there were about fifty workshops producing vienna bronzes. 'cold-painted bronze' refers to pieces cast in vienna and then decorated in several layers with so-called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. The color was not fired hence 'cold painted'. The painting was carried out mainly by women working at home, a typical cottage industry. Sensuous poses of young women in the art nouveau style were disguised by a covering that revealed all when a button was pushed or a lever moved. Often carefully sculpted animals, such as bears, could be opened to reveal an erotic figure inside. The bergmann foundry was closed in 1930 due to the great depression. It was reopened some years later by robert bergmann, son of franz, and operated until his death in 1954 when the remaining stock and molds were sold to karl fuhrmann & co.

a specialist in marine and landscape views, henry pember smith was born in waterford, connecticut in 1854. Little is known about his early training or his career before 1877, when he set up a studio in new york city. It is generally assumed that he was self- taught. From 1877 on, smith exhibited regularly at the national academy of design, although he never became a member. Smith also exhibited at the american watercolor society and the artists' fund.
his landscapes are his best known works, particularly those of new england, spain, italy, england, new york state, and france. These also indicate his love of travel and some of his best known works are venetian scenes. Working primarily in oils and watercolors, and using a tighter technique than the emerging impressionists of his time, smith was a true realist.
around 1901, smith moved to asbury park, new jersey to seek relief from ill health and rheumatism. He died there in october, 1907....more

artist bio:
svend rasmussen svendsen was born march 21, 1864, in nittedal, norway, son of rasmus and marie svendsen. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to oslo. He received his early schooling in norway, although left school at the age of twelve to work. In 1881, he emigrated to america, settling in chicago, il. In 1890, he married may isabel newton with whom he had five children. Svendsen was erroneously reported to have died in 1930 and short obituaries for him appeared in various publications. He was known to have had a decline in his career due to alcoholism and other difficulties, as one of these obituaries pointed out. He actually died in chicago, september 6, 1945.

svensen is considered by some accounts to be a self-taught painter who was known to have enjoyed visiting the national gallery as well as blomquist's gallery, both in oslo, before he emigrated. He also studied with fritz thaulow, a well-known city and landscape painter, in norway and at the académie delécluse in paris in 1896 with edward f. Ertz. He is known especially for his rural scenes, marine views, and snow scenes of norway. His paintings were purchased by a number of norwegian and american private collectors including joseph jefferson, edward b. Butler and clarence darrow. Works by svensen continue to be actively sold through contemporary art auctions.

svendsen exhibited frequently at the chicago art institute between 1895 and 1920, showing oil and watercolor paintings as well as pastels. He won the young fortnightly prize in 1895 awarded by the chicago art institute. He also received an honorable mention for one of his works at the nashville exposition of 1897 and a bronze medal at the st. Louis exposition of 1904.

he had one-man exhibitions at the w. Scott thurber galleries in chicago between 1897 and 1903. He also exhibited at the national academy of design annual in 1902 and the pennsylvania academy of fine arts annual, 1898-1900 and 1902. In 1913, his name appeared on the register of the chicago art dealer o.R. Kellogg. He is recorded to have exhibited at the chicago norske klub in 1920. One of his paintings was shown at the norse-american centennial art exhibition at the minnesota state fair in 1925. He was also included in the exhibition, 'scandinavian paintings in northfield' in 1980. Two of his paintings were in the exhibit, 'the divided heart: scandinavian immigrant artists, 1850-1950,' shown at the university of minnesota in 1982. Works by svendsen were also shown at the 'norway in america' exhibition in norway in 1989 and in the exhibit, 'the friedman collection: artists of chicago,' in spring 2002 held at the spanierman gallery in chicago.

the painting by svensen in the fine arts collection is an oil on canvas entitled, winter landscape, which is undated. It was donated to luther college in 1941 by the family of nils remmen. It has been added to the inventory of american paintings maintained by the national museum of american art at the smithsonian institution....more

background: yankee stadium (1923) yankee stadium was a stadium located in the bronx in new york city, new york. It was the home baseball park of the new york yankees, the city's major league baseball (mlb) franchise, from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. The stadium hosted 6,581 yankees regular season home games during its 85-year history. It was also the former home of the new york giants football team. The stadium's nickname, 'the house that ruth built', is derived from babe ruth, the iconic baseball superstar whose prime years coincided with the stadium's opening and the beginning of the yankees' winning history.

the venue was constructed for 2. 4 million between 1922–1923 specifically for the yankees, who had been sharing the polo grounds with the new york giants baseball team for 10 years. Yankee stadium opened in 1923, and at the time, it was hailed as a one-of-a-kind facility in the country for its size. Over the course of its history, it became one of the most famous venues in the united states, having hosted a variety of events and historic moments during its existence. While many of these moments were baseball-related—including world series games, no-hitters, perfect games, and historic home runs—the stadium also hosted boxing matches, concerts, and three papal masses. The stadium went through many alterations and playing surface configurations over the years. The condition of the facility worsened in the 1960s and 1970s, prompting its closing for renovation from 1974–1975. The renovation significantly altered the appearance of the venue and reduced the distance of the outfield fences.

in 2006, the yankees began building a new 2. 3 billion stadium in public parkland adjacent to the stadium. Many of the iconic features of the original stadium, such as the frieze and monument park, were incorporated into the design of the new venue. Yankee stadium closed following the 2008 baseball season, and the new stadium opened in 2009, adopting the 'yankee stadium' moniker. The original facility was not demolished until 2010, nearly two years after it closed. It is being converted into parkland. The name of the park will be heritage field....more
