This presentation of four male attendants accompanying a heavily covered chair is a part of tomb furnishings that would be placed in a burial of the Ming Dynasty CE 1368 – 1644. The complete set could compose of more than 100 pieces that included attendants, both male and female, soldiers and musicians on horseback, home furnishings such as cabinets, beds, tables and chairs, and the most important would be this spirit chair carried by four attendants. Most of these were excavated in Shanxi Province in North Central China.
The four standing figures in green glazed robes represent the carriers who transport the deceased in the sedan chair to Western Paradise. Each figure wore the same green glazed robe and red conical hat. There is a distinctive shoulder pad on one shoulder. It is specially placed there to keep the pair of long wood pole that transport the chair (poles could have been made of wood that deteriorated through the years.) The ornate chair is a replica of the type of elaborate chair used by nobility. The solidly covered chair protects the rider from weather elements as well as privacy because the front would have a door or drapery. It is a comfortable seating for the long journey.
It is an established tradition in Ming times to make these figures with removable heads for the ease of manufacture. Two attendants have heads that are secured and two are removable. There are small restorations: a corner piece on top of the chair, around the neck and base of the standing figures. The evidence of antiquity can be seen on the green glaze, a common glaze on Ming Dynasty artifacts. Through the years of burial, some of the green have altered and created a silver patina..
