CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE ALBUMEN ART - F STRINGFELLOW

Lot # 191 (Sale Order: 310 of 708)

An artistically rendered watercolor memorial motif to the lost Confederate cause, bearing a hand drawn poem and three Confederate flags, the national colors and battle standard. In the center is a 19th century oval albumen copy shot purportedly of Benjamin Frank Stringfellow, the famous Confederate scout and spy. While the photo is loosely remounted to the watercolor with a few small pieces of adhesive tape, a close examination reveals that the photo was originally mounted to the board by a gum adhesive that has long since dried and crystallized, causing the adherence to loosen and the two pieces to separate. Inspection of the photo mount and board reveals several matching areas where adherence and separation have occurred. It is clear, therefore, that the watercolor and photograph have been together from the beginning, circa 1880 - 1890. Included for comparative purposes is a copy of known view of Stringfellow. This piece of soldier art is 14" x 11" while the albumen is 5" x 3.5". very good - excellent.

CIVIL WAR 1/6TH PLATE AMBROTYPE NATHANIEL BANKS

Lot # 194e (Sale Order: 318 of 708)

Vintage Civil War period copy ambrotype of General Nathaniel P. Banks. At the outbreak of the Civil War, President Lincoln appointed Banks as one of the first 'politic...moreal' major generals, over the heads of West Point regulars, who initially resented him, but came to acknowledge his influence on the administration of the war. After suffering a series of inglorious setbacks in the Shenandoah River Valley at the hands of Stonewall Jackson, Banks replaced Benjamin Butler at New Orleans as commander of the Department of the Gulf, charged with administration of Louisiana and gaining control of the Mississippi River. But he failed to reinforce Grant at Vicksburg, and badly handled the Siege of Port Hudson, taking its surrender only after Vicksburg had fallen. He then launched the Red River Campaign, a failed attempt to occupy eastern Texas that prompted his recall. Banks was regularly criticized for the failures of his campaigns, notably in tactically important tasks including reconnaissance. Banks was also instrumental in early reconstruction efforts in Louisiana, intended by Lincoln as a model for later such activities. After the war, Banks returned to the Massachusetts political scene, serving in Congress, where he supported Manifest Destiny, influenced the Alaska Purchase legislation, and supported women's suffrage. Image is housed in a full case. excellent.

Lot # 195 (Sale Order: 323 of 708)

Model 1855 cartridge box with Civil War period field modifications made by a Union soldier in the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry to allow for more rapid access to the 40 cartridges contained within the box.
