HISTORIC US MILITAY ACADEMY ALBUM 1868 WEST POINT

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 718)

Large leather bound book of photographs -- approximately 14 photos of staff officers and instructors of the academy, many of whom were Civil War veterans, as well as famous 19th Century figures including famed artist and USMA instructor Robert Weir and Brevet Major Edward Boynton. Approximately 52 pages of photographs of the cadets of 1868, including several who are listed as "did not graduate" and additional run of approximately 15 pages of scenic views of West Point, parade grounds, cadet spaces, and General Winfield Scott's grave at West Point. Nearly every portrait in this book has handwritten captions detailing the service and career of these men, which appear to have been done just before the turn of the century. Noteworthy cadets pictured here include James E. Porter who was killed in action at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. A member of Co. I, 7th Cavalry, Porter's body was never recovered; E.W. Bass who served on the Transit of Venus expedition in 1874, appointed as Professor of Mathematics at the Point in '78; Paul Dahlgren son of Rear Admiral Dahlgren of Civil War fame, later appointed as Consul to Italy; and several others. Some of the pages of this book are missing and several of the photos are loose inside. The book is relatively intact and in good condition despite its age. On the cover the name of William J. Volkmar is embossed into the leather. William J. Volkmar graduated in 1868 with these men and served until 1900. Prior to attending west point, he served in the Civil War as an NCO in a Pennsylvania regiment. Very Good

2 US MILITARY ACADEMY WEST POINT ALBUMS CLASS 1896

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 24 of 718)

Two cadet yearbooks from the US Military Academy at West Point, class of 1896. This pair comes with a photocopy of a 40 page article written by Leslie Rose in 1996 titled, "The Justly Celebrated Class of 1896." The smaller of the two books is 42 pages of photographs of cadets and staff faculty of West Point. Each page is heavy cardstock with gilded edges and has two photographs on it. This album belonged to Henry Charles Whitehead who would go on to serve at Fort Apache, Arizona with the 7th Cavalry, and then fight with the 10th Cavalry, earning the Silver Star for gallantry at the Battle of San Juan Hill. Later in his career, he served as part of the Punitive Expedition to Mexico and as assistant to the Chief of Air Service in World War I. He retired in 1934 as a Brigadier General. The hasp is broken on this book, but the pages are stable and in good condition. The larger book is named to Alga Prestina Berry, who commissioned into the 10th Cavalry, fought in Cuba during the Spanish American War, and went on to become a company commander before being dismissed from the Army after court martial in 1905 and committing suicide at the age of 33. This book includes 42 CDV style photos, many of West Point officers, cadets, and some candid home shots which are evidently Berry's family and children, as well as some later Spanish American War era group photos. Many of the photos were researched and identified by the consignor and have the names of the men depicted below them. This book is missing some pages and the leather at the spine is completely torn away, but the book is still solid and stable. Very Good - Excellent
