EARLY REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD UNIVERSAL MAGAZINE MAP DEPICTING PORTIONS OF NEW YORK CITY.

Lot # 1026 (Sale Order: 26 of 679)

Scarce and important map of New York City that was printed in Universal Magazine in 1776 shortly after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. This magazine issue plan is considered to be the second earliest obtainable map of New York City. After the Revolutionary war commenced, there was renewed interest in the American colonies throughout Britain. Early in the war, the British experienced great success especially with their New York Campaign in which the Continental Army fled New York City. This map was issued as a result of the renewed interest of the American Colonies especially because of Britain's successful conquests thus far. The map illustrates the lower part of modern day Manhattan from around 14th street to the Battery. Also pictured are significant portions of Brooklyn which is just across the east river. There is also a legend that was a cut from the magazine and identifies points of interest around New York Island. CONDITION: The map exhibits scattered foxing and there is evidence of water damage, especially around the corners of the frame. The map exhibits slight fading and has yellowed over time. The frame is damaged and taped around the back as reinforcement. Despite the wear, this map is still a very significant piece of American history. Overall good. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer Collection. JLD

MARKED SCOTTISH BASKET HILTED CAVALRY BACK SWORD

Lot # 1028 (Sale Order: 28 of 679)

For an example of a nearly identical hilt, see plate 124.SS on page 345 of "Battle Weapons of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. According to Neumann this style dates to about 1757, when "the English began issuing this inexpensive sword to their Highland enlisted men, who carved them here during the French and Indian War." This mid-18th century example features a straight unfullered single-edged blade. The iron basket hilt has round and triangular piercings on each panel, bottom panel engraved "I / No. I". The conical pommel cap has engraved lines and a flattened ball capstan. The wooden grip no longer retains its shagrin wrap. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina with visible hardened area towards top. A couple battle nicks to cutting edge. Hilt retains a grey patina and is slightly loose to blade. Grip shows wear and one minor chip. A very nice French and Indian War Highlander basket hilt. DMG Blade Length: 36" Overall Length: 43"

AMERICAN PARADE HALBERD IN THE GERMAN STYLE

Lot # 1032 (Sale Order: 32 of 679)

Late parade halberd in the German style, most likely American. By the outbreak of the American Revolution, the halberd was being used as both a defensive weapon and a symbol of rank, especially for Sergeants. This example was too late for the Revolution, but was most likely used for parades. The construction asserts this, as the halberd is composed of 2 pieces: the point, and the blade and beak. The point is screwed into place and the blade and beak are loosely held in place by iron wires. The blade and beak feature German style decorations including crosses while the hearts are a more American feature. The halberd is also marked with what appears to be a museum number which reads "P11". The blade measures 8 - 1/2" and the point measures 10". The halberd has both of its original iron straps which secure the blade to the wood haft with six iron nails on each side. The halberd measures 89" overall and ends with a spike base. CONDITION: The blade, beak, and point all exhibit delamination marks that are consistent with hand forging. There are also areas of scattered pitting and light surface rust. The haft exhibits handling marks but remains sturdy. Overall good. PROVENANCE: John K. Lattimer Collection. JLD Blade Length: 20" Overall Length: 89"

U.S. NAVY USS CONSTITUTION QUARTER PIKE.

Lot # 1034 (Sale Order: 34 of 679)

Once deemed the "rarest type of naval boarding pikes" this example of a boarding Pike, is the so-called "quarter pike". These pikes first appeared on a 1797 dated document of ordnance allowance which described "100 boarding or quarter pikes" for the USS Constitution. These pikes appear again on pages 143-144 of the book "American Polearms, 1526-1865" by H. Rodney Brown as well as a pictorial appearance in a lithograph that was featured in Maclay's "Naval History of the United States Navy (1898). There has been much dispute over the authenticity of these quarter pikes, but it is now known that these polearms were fabricated in the twentieth century and their appearance was based on 18th century records. Although the USS Constitution was outfitted with 100 boarding pikes including these so called quarter pikes, none are known to have survived. These quarter pikes were made famous in the 1920s when the USS Constitution was being restored. Although the exact representation of the quarter pike is conjectural, these pikes still reflect the appearance of eighteenth century short boarding pike. This example features a flat double edged blade that measures approximately 8 - 1/4" with an iron ferrule. The blade is secured to the wood shaft that measures 28 - 1/2" inches long by 2 iron languets which are fastened to the shaft by screws. The screws have all been filed down and are hard to see. The blade is marked with the inventory number "420" above the initials "JKL" denoting that this piece is from the John K. Lattimer collection. CONDITION: The blade and iron components exhibit an attractive gray patina with scattered pitting throughout. There are file marks on the languets. Overall good. Despite their controversial history, these pikes still hold value and have been adopted as collectible polearms. JLD Blade Length: 8" Overall Length: 36 - 7/8"
