Very similar in form to Henry Deringer's iconic small sized pocket pistols, this example is marked "DERINGER" on both the lock and top barrel flat. Features include a 2 - 1/4" .41 caliber rifled barrel, blade front sight, V-notch rear sight, scroll engraved back action percussion lock, checkered bird's head walnut grip, and German silver mounts with the trigger guard being lightly engraved. CONDITINON: Very good overall. Steel components have drifted to an honest mottled gray patina. Grip is very good showing moderate wear and light impressions. Good mechanics. Lot # 2002 (Sale Order: 2 of 417)      

Manufactured by R.P. Bruff in the 1850s and 1860s to compete with Henry Deringer's famous pocket pistols, this derringer is of very similar form to the original. It features a 2 - 1/2" .41 caliber barrel marked "CAST STEEL" on the top flat with 2 German silver bands and some foliate engraving over the chamber. Top flat is also maker marked with in an arc "R. P. BRUFF" over "NY". Standard lightly engraved back action percussion lock. Stock is checkered walnut with a birdshead grip and German silver mounts, the trigger guard being engraved. CONDITION: Very good. Steel components have turned an attractive dark patina. Stock is good retaining sharp checkering with some finish loss and handling marks. Good bore and mechanics. Lot consists of: (A) Double action percussion pistol made circa 1840s through the 1860s by Allen & Thurber with a 2" .28 half octagon turn off barrel. 1845 style action with u shaped mainspring and bar hammer marked "ALLENS PATENT". Iron frame with light scroll engraving and a 2-piece walnut grip. CONDITION: Very good displaying a pleasing gray patina with a few traces of original finish. Grips are good with a few impressions. Dark bore. Fine mechanics. (B) Very similar in configuration to gun (A) but unmarked with a slightly different pattern of scroll engraving. CONDITION: Very good exhibiting a mottled gray patina. Grips are good with scattered marks. Lightly pitted bore. Good mechanics. While not entirely matched, the pistols are a near pair with and are housed together in an attractive felt lined hardwood presentation case, which remains in very good condition showing some minor bruises. Lot # 2005 (Sale Order: 5 of 417)      

Circa mid-19th century utility and protection pistol made by Unwin & Rogers of Sheffield, England featuring 2 folding blades: an unusual 3" dagger and a 1 - 7/8" utility blade, each marked on the ricasso with Rogers maker marks. Classic 3 - 1/2" German silver tapered octagon barrel with smooth .32 caliber bore stamped with Birmingham proofs. Pistol is fired with a folding trigger and central hammer which strikes a breech mounted nipple. The body of the pistol is made with 2 brass backed horn scales with German silver and steel spacers. A small trapdoor tool compartment is included in the butt with an additional slot for tweezers. Tweezers are a period replacement. CONDITION: Good. German silver is bright as cleaned with iron components exhibiting a gray, freckled patina. Blades have been sharpened. Grip scales are very good with some handling marks. Only a few hundred were made in the early 1860s by the Union Knife Co. for inventor John Lindsay, whose interesting 2-shot firearms utilize superposed loads, allowing the user to fire 2 shots from one barrel without reloading, each shot fired by a separate hammer. This pocket size example features a 4" octagon barrel with half moon front sight and frame notch rear. Barrel is marked on the right side with correct 5-line maker mark within foliate scroll. Left side of barrel is engraved a patriotic panoply of flags between a lion and an eagle. The brass spur trigger frame is also engraved with a tiger on the right side and a buck deer on the left. Grips are smooth 2-piece walnut. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel exhibits a soft gray patina, with the frame displaying a very pleasing mellow mustard patina as well. Notch rear sight with silver blade front sight. 2 silver inlaid lines with "DERINGER / PHILADELA'' centered between and same mark on rear of lock plate. All panels, hammer, lock, and trigger guard show typical scroll engraving. Accent escutcheons are of German silver with a teardrop engraved butt plate and silver tip. Vacant shield shaped escutcheon on top of tang aft of the barrel. CONDITION: Barrel has a dark pitted brown finish with hammer cleaned in recent times. Wood shows heavy wear and periods dings. (A) LOT OF 2 PERCUSSION PISTOLS, NEW JERSEY MARKED US M1836 BY JOHNSON CONVERTED FROM FLINTLOCK AND

Lot # 2012 (Sale Order: 12 of 417)      

Lot consists of: (A) US Model 1836 martial pistol manufactured by Johnson and dated 1837 on lock. Converted to percussion during the pre-Civil War era with installation of bolster. Captured swivel ramrod and 1 piece walnut stocks with iron mountings. New Jersey ownership marked on left barrel flat and left stock flat opposite lock. Stock also bears JH and HKC cartouches. CONDITION: Very good, with iron components retaining a pleasant brown patina with evidence of cleaning. Stock is in matching condition with cartouches sharp, evidence of cleaning, and handling marks throughout. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with scattered areas of abrasion. (B) US Model 1842 martial pistol manufactured by Aston and dated 1847 on lock. Barrel is dated 1848 near breech. Captured swivel ramrod and 1 piece walnut stocks with brass mountings. Left flat of stock opposite lock bears faint WAT and JM cartouches. CONDITION: Good as cleaned bright with areas of freckling, especially near muzzle and bolster. Brass is beginning to form a mellow patina with areas of light oxidation. Stock has evidence of cleaning and handling marks with cartouches faint. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark. Captured swivel ramrod and 1 piece walnut stocks with iron mountings. New Jersey ownership marked on left barrel flat and left stock flat opposite lock. Stock also bears JH and HKC cartouches. CONDITION: Very good, with iron components retaining a pleasant brown patina with evidence of cleaning. Stock is in matching condition with cartouches sharp, evidence of cleaning, and handling marks throughout. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with scattered areas of abrasion. (B) US Model 1842 martial pistol manufactured by Aston and dated 1847 on lock. Barrel is dated 1848 near breech. Captured swivel ramrod and 1 piece walnut stocks with brass mountings. Left flat of stock opposite lock bears faint WAT and JM cartouches. CONDITION: Good as cleaned bright with areas of freckling, especially near muzzle and bolster.
