7TH NEW HAMSHIRE RECRUITING POSTER, ARMED WITH SPENCERS.

Lot # 3003 (Sale Order: 3 of 385)

This is an impressive early war recruiting poster for an active regiment recruited in New Hampshire by the state Adjutant General J. C. Abbot, but under the authority and direction of the U.S. War Department with the state supplying only the $10.00 bounty. As the poster promised, Abbott was determined to make it by a “crack regiment,” getting commitments from the War Dept. to revoke commissions of incompetent officers and agreeing to step aside only if the government would appoint a West Point graduate to command, which was was done. The regiment saw action in the Department of the South, the Army of the James, and the Department of North Carolina in the 10th and 24th Army Corps, losing 15 officers and 169 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded on more than 60 occasions in battles such as the first and second assault on Fort Wagner (where it lost 218 men), the Battle of Olustee (where it lost 209 men), Drewry’s Bluff, Battle of New Market Heights, Ft. Fisher, and numerous other engagements including prolonged service under fire during the actions against Charleston and the siege of Petersburg. It was unusual in being rearmed with Spencer carbines in 1864. CONDITION: Very good. The center features a dynamic American eagle on shield and a large red “7.” Some folds, foxing and small losses. Untouched, but framed and very displayable as is or with conservation. Lower right corner missing, but not affecting text. SR

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE FAYETTEVILLE RIFLE SOCKET BAYONET

Lot # 3008 (Sale Order: 8 of 385)

This is a fine example of a Civil War angular socket bayonet that was produced by the Confederate States of America at their arsenal in Fayetteville North Carolina. The bayonet is completely unmarked which is standard with bayonets produced in the Fayetteville Arsenal. The blade is 13/16” wide at its widest point. The Fayetteville socket bayonet is depicted in Robert Reilly’s book. "American Socket Bayonets & Scabbards" and is referenced as item #B116. This particular bayonet complies with the dimensions that are presented by Reilly. The bayonet has a 3” socket and a 19 - 7/8” blade. The bore diameter of the bayonet is .887” which is only slightly smaller than the nominal diameter of .889” that is referenced in Reilly’s book. This minor variation is acceptable for the more crudely made Confederate bayonet. The bayonet is complete with a large domed tension screw that is typically found on the Fayetteville bayonet locking ring. There is a 1" crack on top of the lug which has been repaired by welding. There is scattered light pitting throughout and the blade exhibits a darkened patina. CONDITION: Good. JLD Blade Length: 19 - 7/8" Overall Length: 23"

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE BOYLE GAMBLE & MCFEE SABER BAYONET WITH SCABBARD AND ADAPTER RING

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 9 of 385)

Civil War Confederate Boyle Gamble & Mcfee saber bayonet with scabbard and marked bayonet adaptor. This bayonet is unmarked, but it conforms to similar example's specification. This bayonet is constructed with a yataghan blade that measures 20 - 7/8" in length, with a hollow-cast hilt, making the overall length 25 - 3/4". The blade exhibits a gray patina, with areas of scattered pitting and other blemishes. The brass hilt exhibits the correct reddish tint that is commonly encountered on Confederate brass as a result of the addition of excess copper. The bayonet is complete with its period leather and brass scabbard. the scabbard features its original brass throat but is missing the brass stud. Other examples of Boyle Gamble & Mcfee bayonet scabbards have a leather drag, while this example has a brass drag. The brass drag is hollow, and when looking down it reveals a hole in the leather suggesting that the tip of the leather drag had been cut off and replaced with the brass drag. The patina on the brass drag is consistent with the patina on the throat and it appears that this bayonet was altered in order to reinforce the scabbard in the field. There is a 1/2" crack in the brass drag. This example features a desirable Confederate B.G.& M bayonet adapter that completes the set. These adapters were designed to provide a lug for the barrel of rifles manufactured without an integral bayonet lug affixed to the barrel. The adapter is marked "BG&M / Richmond Va / Pat Sep" (should finish with "2, 1861") on the side and the number "42" is clearly visible on the lug. The adapter exhibits a nice patina with a few scattered blemishes. This is a complete example of a sought after Confederate blade. CONDITION: Good. Lot # 3011 (Sale Order: 11 of 385)

Early style quillback blade and flaring false edge. Gilt brass hilt with triple-wire bound, sharkskin grip, lion pommel, guard with Gothic arches and crowned naval anchor on exterior, folding reverse counterguard. Blade etched with floral, naval and royal motifs including crown over a fouled anchor, lion and “honi soit qui mal y pense” garter. Maker name on reverse: “Drury/32 /Strand/London.” Guard interior engraved in Gothic lettering: “This sword belonged to / Commander Henry Taylor R.N. / born March 17 1793 died at Surbiton / Dec 3rd 1866 he served in 1814-1815 & was present at the affairs of / Zara Adriadic [sic] Baltimore & Potomac / Robert Curling / executor to will of Henry Tryon, R.N.” Tryon’s career is summarized in Coburn’s United Service Magazine and elsewhere. His obituary and notice of Curling as executor appear in contemporary newspapers. Born in 1793, he entered the navy 14 January 1809 as a junior officer on the HMS Sirius, then undergoing repairs at Chatham. He sailed with the ship for the Cape of Good Hope and Indian Ocean in February, was at the taking of several French vessels, the September 1809 capture of St. Paul on Reunion, and the taking of Reunion itself in July 1810. In August he was in the battle of Grand Port at Mauritius, resulting in the destruction of the Sirius, was present when Mauritius fell in December, and “brought to England” (presumably as temporary commander, but at least as crew member) the prize ship La Manche. In May 1811 he joined the HMS Havannah, serving in the Channel and then taking part in the 1813 Adriatic Campaign, where he was wounded in a cutting-out action (a boarding attack by small boats) at Tremiti and received a gold medal from the Austrian government for actions in the Anglo-Austrian siege and taking of Zara. In 1814 he was with Cochrane’s fleet in the attack on Baltimore, which puts him on the scene for the bombardment of Fort McHenry and the composition of the Star-Spangled Banner. He was subsequently wounded and captured in December during another cutting-out affair on the Potomac. He was freed with the declaration of peace shortly afterward and in March 1815 promoted to lieutenant. In the postwar period he served as an Admiralty agent in 1837 and was ranked as a retired commander in 1864. He lived for a time at Deal, County of Kent, and died at Surbiton (London) 27 November 1866. CONDITION: Very good. Guard shows gilt finish. Lion pommel nicely detailed. Blade with good edge and point. Etching thin, but visible as muted silver against thin gray throughout. No scabbard. SR Blade Length: 29" Overall Length: 34 - 1/2" Paperwork: Bio of Henry Tryon

FANTASTIC, COMPLETE, ID'D USMC PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION UNIFORM GROUPING.

Lot # 3025 (Sale Order: 25 of 385)

Outstanding US Marine Corps Philippine Insurrection Uniform Grouping that is identified to Ernest Franklin Dennis. Born on February 22, 1879, Dennis grew up and lived in West Virginia. Dennis enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 8, 1900 and served a duration of 5 years, concluding his service on June 28, 1905. The grouping is superb, as every piece with the exception of the Pattern 1897 hat with the desirable white cover is named to Dennis, as he did not appear to be shy when marking his possessions. The lot consists of (A) Dennis' Dress blue tunic which is named to him in 2 places, twice in the collar with white paint, and his name is also written in the left sleeve. The tunic retains all of its original USMC buttons. There is a period repair to the left sleeve, and various moth nips, but the tunic is otherwise complete. (B) Dennis' dress blue trousers which are named to him in various places around the waistline. The trousers are complete with all of their original USMC buttons. There are scattered stains and moth nips but the trousers are well preserved overall. (C) Next is the rarest piece of the lot, which is Dennis' wool 5 button undershirt. These shirts are incredibly rare and sought after. Although many of these shirts survived the humid temperatures of the Philippines, not many survived the test of time and they are seldom encountered. The shirt is named to Dennis inside the collar, like his other uniform pieces. Only 3 buttons remain on the shirt and even though they are mismatched, they appear to have been sewn on the shirt during the period. There are 2 repairs, one is an approximately 8" tear that on the side and another 3" tear on the lower front. Both tears are repaired with the same thread and appear to be period. The shirt does exhibit heavy mothing, especially near the bottom, however, the shirt remains intact and durable. (D) Dennis' light blue USMC overcoat with scarlet red lining. Just like the tunic and shirt, this accoutrement is also named to Dennis inside the collar. The overcoat is complete with all of its original USMC buttons and is nearly untouched by moths, as there are only a few visible nips near the bottom of the coat. (E) Another rare pieces is Dennis' Pattern 1897 hat with the desirable white cover complete with a bronze EGA. The hat is missing its leather chinstrap but retains both of the side buttons. The brim has warped but there are no severe cracks or splits in the leather. The sweatband is stiff and there is little separation from the frame. There is discoloration on the white cover from aging. (F) Pattern 1892 epaulettes that are unsurprisingly named to Dennis. Both of the epaulettes are for the left shoulder, and when flipped it is revealed that each epaulette was manufactured by a different maker. Despite not matching the most important similarity is that they both exhibit evidence of Dennis' name on the reverse. Both epaulettes are complete and only exhibit minor blemishes. (G) M1898 canvas leggings that are both named to Dennis on the interior. The leather straps are stiff and the leggings exhibit tarnishing as they were most likely worn heavily during Dennis' time overseas. (H) Lastly, there is an extensive file of paperwork regarding Dennis' life from his birth in 1879 till his death on December 19, 1972. The file is mostly copies of service documents which include his enlistment papers, overview of his assignments, discharge papers, and more. There are even copies of his written account of his time during his time in the Marine Corps. There is one original document, which is his discharge document from 1905. This is an incredible named grouping to a Marine who served during one of the United States' smaller but prominent conflicts. Early US Marine Crops groupings are sought after and seldom come to market, especially groups that contain a uniform this complete with almost every piece being named to the same Marine. CONDITION: Overall very good. JLD

JLD
