BEARDED AXE.

Lot # 3004 (Sale Order: 4 of 582)

Bearded axes are most commonly associated with the Vikings, and have been recorded as early as the 6th century. Their distinct "beard" is formed by removing metal from behind the cutting edge, lowering the overall weight of the weapon, and allowing for additional uses such as hooking an opponent's shield and pulling it out of position. This example has a 7" cutting edge with a tapered socket for shaft and a touchmark resembling an "E" near shaft. Haft is slightly curved and has a flat area along spine just behind socket. CONDITION: Axe is in excavated condition with with heavy pitting throughout that has formed a rich chocolate patina. Deterioration is visible in several areas, with one small hole in the axe head that goes completely through, and missing several pieces around socket. Shaft, of a more recent vintage than the axe, with some grain separations and chips throughout; one set of chips and cuts along the spine looks as though it might have been intentional as part of a design. This is a very attractive example of one of the most utilitarian axe designs. EMW Blade Length: 7" Overall Length: 25"

16TH CENTURY ITALIAN CHAUVE SOURIS.

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 6 of 582)

An elaborate form of the runka, the chauve souris is an elaborate polearm that features upward pointing "bat wings" which were used throughout Europe during medieval times. This polearm is similar in design to the ranseur and partisan, but is distinguished by its single edged bat wings which were used for slashing. This example is in the Italian style and features a hand forged 19" central blade from base to tip, that is flanked by two bat wings that measure 8" from base to tip. The blade is mounted on a rounded wood haft that measures approximately 79 - 3/4" in total length and is topped with a fabric collar that measures approximately 9 - 1/8". The rest of the haft is adorned with hand made iron decorative tacks. The construction is consistent with polearms that date to the 16th century and similar examples are pictured on page 176 in George Cameron Stone's "A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration, and Use of Arms and Armor in All Countries and in All Times". The fabric collar appears to have been added later, as the tacks are of a different construction. CONDITION: The blade exhibits various forging flaws and heavy pitting throughout as well as evidence of cleaning. The central blade remains somewhat sharp and exhibits various chips and indents along the edges. The haft exhibits various handling marks and wood loss in some areas. Overall good. PROVENANCE: John K. Lattimer Collection. JLD This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Blade Length: 19" Overall Length: 103"

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 7 of 582)

Circa 16th century Swiss style Lucerne hammer. As a combination of a bec de corbin and a war hammer, the Lucerne hammer's square pusher spike was very effective at spearing while the 4 pronged hammer was equally effective at defeating the defensive capabilities of armor. The Lucerne hammer was especially popular in Switzerland and saw service in the Swiss armies during the 15th through the 17th centuries. The top of the hammer features a square pusher spike blade which was inserted transversely and measures approximately 15 - 3/4". A split hammer that features four pronged spikes which measure approximately 2" each highlight the front. Behind the split hammer is a curved falcon's beak spike that measures approximately 5" and is flanked by one a 2" spike on either side. CONDITION: The iron components exhibit an attractive dark gray patina with scattered pitting throughout. The top iron rivet is damaged, but the hammer remains secured to the haft with no loose shaking. There are various scratches and chips in the haft, but they do not take away from the appearance of this polearm. This is a nice example of a Swiss Lucerne hammer that is ready to be displayed with other polearms. PROVENANCE: Formerly in the John K. Lattimer Collection. Overall good.
