(A) CASED PAIR OF ULYSSES S. GRANT & ROBERT E. LEE COMMEMORATIVE COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY PERCUSSION REV

Lot # 4001 (Sale Order: 1 of 631)      

(A + B) Manufactured by Colt in commemoration of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Left barrel flat of (A) is stamped "ULYSSES S. GRANT COMMEMORATIVE - NINETTEN SEVENTY ONE" with (B) being stamped "ROBERT E. LEE COMMEMORATIVE - NINETEEN SEVENTY ONE", with the Colt single line address across the top of the barrels. Only 250 for these match sets were made. Revolvers feature blued barrel & cylinders, case colored frames, hammers, and loading levers, with nickel plated trigger guards and grip straps. Cylinders are engraved with a naval scene as well as "Engaged 16 May 1843" and "Engraved by W.L. Ormsby, New York". Revolvers are present in a Colt "MATCHED PAIR" marked wood display case, featuring a velvet lined interior and containing a bullet mold, powder flask, disassembly tool, firing cap containers, and the case key. CONDITION: Excellent, with metal components retaining virtually all of their original factory applied finish overall. Frames retain vibrant case coloring, showing some small areas of losses as well as some very light spots of oxidation on gun (B). Mirror bores, exhibiting well defined lands and grooves throughout. Grips show few minor marks from handling and storage overall. Case shows some light external wear, with the top right compartment of the case having broken off on one side at one point. A attractive matched pair of commemorative Colt revolvers. Lot consists of: (A) Martially marked Remington New Model Army .44 percussion revolver manufactured 1873 to 1875. Blued 8" octagon barrel with 3-line "NEW MODEL" address. Blade front sight and frame notch rear. 6-shot percussion cylinder with safety notches between chambers. Revolver bears "C" condemnation marks on barrel, cylinder and frame, in addition to "W" inspector mark on barrel and "J" inspector mark on frame. Grips are 2-piece smooth walnut marked on left panel with inspector cartouche. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel retains noticeable portions of factory applied blued finish turning to brown patina. Frame has traces of blue with overall brown appearance. Traces of faded case colors visible on hammer. Grips have expected impression and light wear, partially obscuring cartouche. (B) E. Whitney .36 caliber Navy manufactured circa early 1860s. Octagon 7 - 3/4" barrel with E. WHITNEY / N.HAVEN" address. Pin front sight and frame notch rear. 6-shot cylinder with safety notches. Colt style loading lever. 2-piece smooth walnut grips with initials carved on right grip. CONDITION: Good. Cleaned bright brag patina on frame and barrel with barrel turning brown. Some evidence of cleaned corrosion. Cylinder scene worn off. Grips are dark with no major signs of distress, although have been backed with ivory spacers. Round steel barrel with blade front sight. Blued finish on the barrel, trigger, rear grip strap and cylinder. Case colored frame, loading lever and hammer. Brass front grip strap/trigger guard. Oil finished wood grip. Includes a custom made wood case with a green velvet interior. Also includes a powder flask, bullet mold, tool and key to the case. CONDITION: Metal retains 98% of its original finishes with light wear and scratches. Blade has some corrosion on it. Grip is excellent. Bore is shiny with crisp rifling. Tight hammer and cylinder. Good timing and lockup. Nipples show no signs of use. Mechanically fine. Case is fair, and is broken on the edge of the lid. Accessories are fine. Features include a blued 2" barrel, alloy frame with black anodized finish, ramp front sight, frame notched rear sight, as well as 2-piece Colt silver medallion checkered walnut grips. Revolver is accompanied by an original Colt factory cardboard box, which is hand-scribed to match on the bottom. Ejector rod head is a nickeled replacement. Grips are hand-scribed to match the frame on the interior of the panels. "12811" and "(Eagle Head) / S2" on inside of crane, "158032" and "(Eagle Head) / S34" on underside of barrel, under ejector rod. Gun was then heavily customized with frame engraved with near complete coverage of flowing scroll with hatch shading, which extends to cylinder flats (gullets left unadorned), backstrap, and trigger guard. Barrel with light scroll where it meets frame, with 2 lines of straight florals running to muzzle. Hammer has had 3 cuts done horizontally on hammer to aid in grip. Thick ivory grips with checkered panels and retained by a single screw through brass escutcheon. CONDITION: Very good, retaining the vast majority of the custom finish with some silvering and light patination to high edges and operational areas. Some minor marks from handling and use, primarily visible on right side of barrel. Barrel blue is starting to plum. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand.
