(N) HISTORIC WORLD WAR I FRENCH MODEL 1914 HOTCHKISS MACHINE GUN ON U.S. STANDARD PRODUCTS MOUNT (CU

Lot # 2027 (Sale Order: 27 of 667)

Historic and collectible World War I French model 1914 Hotchkiss machine gun in original 8mm Lebel on an original U.S. Standard ground mount. Only about 2500 of these mounts were manufactured and most were scrapped many years ago. This Hotchkiss is dated “1918” on right side of receiver, and “MITRAILLEUSE AUTOMATIQUE HOTCHKISS / BREVETEE S.G.D.G. / CALIBRE 8 M/M” on left side of receiver. Receiver, barrel, and barrel retention latch are matching numbers. Brass feed block is #43147. This gun's sight is marked for "D" ammunition which indicates it was probably a WW1 bringback gun and was never retrofitted for the later "N" Type ammunition. This model incorporates an attractive brass pistol grip and steel backplate handle for traversing this gun on its mount. Also included are seven 8mm Lebel feed strips with original "N" type red primer ammunition, and seven Japanese Hotchkiss brass feed strips. Note that the "N" type ammunition should not be fired out of this gun. Tripod traverse stops not present which does not affect serviceability. Attachment pin between tripod head and gun is a contemporary standard bolt. The French Model 1914 Hotchkiss machine gun is an extremely durable design and was used by both the French and U.S. forces during World War I. The heavy cooling rings on the barrel are an instantly recognizable trademark. These are great, steady firing guns. CONDITION: Overall finish and appearance is fine to extremely fine original smooth blue finish turning to a grey-brown patina with some areas of scattered light pitting. Operating piston and bolt appropriately in the white. Brass handgrip very attractive. Exposed portion of the operating piston has some brown patina. Tripod has undergone exceptionally fine restorative work and makes for an incredibly steady firing platform. Bore of gun is very fine with strong shiny rifling turning dark in the grooves. Bolt face extremely fine. Mechanics are fine. This is a full-auto only machine gun. For the World War machine gun collector/enthusiast this is about as attractive a package as one could hope for. The advent of availability of boxer primed 8mm Lebel ammunition has breathed new life into this venerable and incredibly accurate machine gun model. This cataloger has seen this gun in action and it runs well! THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. (N) HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON REISING MODEL 50 MACHINE GUN (CURIO & RELIC).

Lot # 2034 (Sale Order: 33 of 667)

Fine example of a smooth finish 14" barrel Reising Model 50 machine gun with compensator. Stock marked "MSP 4" which this cataloger can only guess at which State Police beginning with the letter "M" this might correspond to. Four 20 round magazines and one 12 round magazine is included with lot as well as one heavy leather sling. The Reising Model 50 is a quality built machine gun which was fielded in limited numbers mostly to the Marine corps during World War II because there were insufficient Thompson machine guns to meet military demand. The Reising has the intrinsic accuracy advantage of firing from a closed bolt on the first shot. Police departments took to the Reising, and a semi-automatic model was also produced in response to civilian private factory security demands. Today the Reising Model 50 has gained popularity as a well-made and fun .45 ACP entry level machine gun. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine to extremely fine original smooth grey commercial finish turning to a pleasing grey patina, particularly at the high edges. There is a 2-1/2" long sliver out of the wood at the top left edge of the stock midway between the rear sight and the ejection port area. This does not detract from the overall appearance of the weapon and does not affect the serviceability at all. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are fine with a nice strong recoil spring. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO & RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) ORIGINAL VETERAN BRING-BACK JAPANESE TYPE 96 MACHINE GUN (CURIO & RELIC).

Lot # 2041 (Sale Order: 40 of 667)

Extremely fine specimen of the Japanese Type 96 light machine gun as manufactured by Kokura in 1939, August. Visible serial numbers appear matching on barrel, receiver, lower assembly, charging handle, dust cover, and buffer, as well as barrel latch and safety. Accessories include one original 30 round magazine and an original 2.5x13 scope manufactured by Toko, as well as spare barrel serial number 40690 manufactured in 1940, August; bayonet and rifleman's leather belt pouch. Bipod and muzzle cover also present. The Japanese Type 96 machine gun bears a striking resemblance to the ZB26 machine gun. It fires an open bolt and was an effective full auto only automatic rifle. With practiced trigger control, the firer can squeeze off individual shots. The adjustable gas port was intended to defeat the problem of fouling, which it did, but soldiers also found that it could adjust the rate of fire. This model was preferred over the Type 11, which required oiling of the cartridges as they passed through the feed hopper. Japanese soldiers even preferred it over the later Type 99 Model due to its lighter recoil and convenience of removing the barrel by way of a lever. American veterans this cataloger has spoken to in past years stated "Wish our BAR had a 30 round magazine like the Jap Nambu machine guns did". CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine to very fine as brought back by veteran William H. Woodin from Burma who related that he acquired it in trade for a carton of cigarettes at the time. Very fine original smooth blue finish on metal parts with some wear at points turning to a grey patina at the high edges, and starting to fade to brown in some areas; lower assembly's metal furnishings, particularly the buttplate turning a brown patina. Barrel in gun has shiny lands, turning dark in the grooves. Bolt face is very fine. Mechanics are fine. Spare barrel bore somewhat darker but with distinct rifling. Optics are clear but could use a cleaning. Bayonet is fine. Belt pouch extremely fine leather with one strap parted and not present, and the belt straps somewhat chewed at the ends, probably by some rodent, yet still serviceable. It is a rare occurrence when a matching veteran bring-back such as this example surfaces. Knowing where and how this specimen was acquired only enhances the mystique of this machine gun. From the estate of noted cartridge collector and World War II veteran William H. Woodin. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO & RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) HIGH ORIGINAL CONDITION JAPANESE TYPE 89 GRENADE DISCHARGER (DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE).

Lot # 2042 (Sale Order: 41 of 667)

A fine representative specimen of the Japanese Type 89 grenade discharger with Nagoya Arsenal markings visible below serial number. Visible numbers are matching. Trigger slot dust cover intact and serviceable. Type 89 grenade discharger was a highly portable and effective weapon utilized by the Japanese in World War II. Americans coined the phrase "Knee Mortar" due to the curved baseplate, however utilizing this weapon against the leg would result in grievous injury to the leg. The Japanese made effective use of this weapon as both in indirect but more often a hasty direct fire weapon. The range is adjustable by turning a knurled adjustment knob at the right side. Many American soldiers wished the United States had provided something similar to them. U.S. soldiers took to using our own 60mm mortar in a like manner. Please note that original inert projectiles will be offered separately in a future Morphy's auction as part of an excellent and exciting offering of the grenade collection of noted cartridge collector William H. Woodin. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine original lustrous blue finish throughout, with some high edge wear at the muzzle and sprinkling of on underside of case plate (which nobody ever sees). Bore is very fine, as is face of firing pin head. Mechanics are crisp. A wonderful World War II souvenir in great condition. Suitable for any museum or discerning collector.
