Lot # 2001 (Sale Order: 1 of 900)      

These early Austrian cavalry pistols were often carried by Americans throughout the late colonial period. This example with rudimentary steel furniture, heavy barrel with flattened rib for sighting, oversize lock with bridled frizzen and swan neck cock. Barrel proof towards breech with "Brown" over "T" and "S". Steel sideplate with two side nails. Figured walnut full stock with steel band at muzzle and no provision for ramrod. Barrel has been shortened by an inch. Spurred steel buttcap. CONDITION: Well worn throughout. Stock with one significant split at the tail of the lock. Butt with fine worn patina throughout. An attractive early military flintlock pistol that possibly saw use in America. Action defective, bore is fair. Standard configuration with belt hook on the left side. Dated 1827. The lock has an extra hole in it for an incorrect replacement mainspring. Appears to be original flint, however we're not positive. CONDITION: All metal surfaces retain cleaned look to them with some pitting. Gun was possibly blued at some point. Markings are clear. Wood has some dings and handling marks, no cartouche. One of the rarer and more desirable secondary US martial pistols, Joseph Henry with 150 pairs in 1807 and 600 in 1808, delivered quantities unknown. Pistol with long barrel, deeply struck with proof on left side. Bolted lock, signed at tail J. Henry Phila. Lock stamped at center US. CONDITION: Barrel with minor pitting throughout, more significant at breech and touch hole. The lock has crisp markings. The frizzen and pan have pitting similar to breech, indicating that this may well be original flint. Hammer is a modern cast replacement of incorrect function and is loose on stud. Pinned walnut full stock with no visible cartouche, but no significant losses. Brass trigger guard and butt cap of typical 1807-08 form. Except for the hammer and screw, this rarity appears to be original. Ramrod with slotted tip, possibly the original. Bore is fair. (A) RARE MODEL 1817 US MARTIAL FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY SPRINGFIELD ARMORY DATED 1818.

With only 400 of the type 1 model 1817, this is the first handgun made in quantity at Springfield Armory. These later examples were made when Col. Robert Lee was the superintendent of Springfield Armory. The large and handsome pistol with round barrel, with viewed and proved marks, with eagle at left of breech, dated 1818. The bolted lock stamped SPRINGFIELD 1818 at tail, with eagle and US forward of the swan neck cock. Walnut full stock with remnants of cartouche on left flat. Steel side plate stamped T. FOY further engraved T. FOY and stamped once more T.F. CONDITION: Barrel shows minor pitting and staining. Steel mounts commensurate to barrel. Lock with crisp Springfield markings at tail and US eagle somewhat worn. Stock with minor split behind one side nail, otherwise full dimension with strong remnant cartouche. Ramrod appears to be the original, with proper slotted tip. Action works well, frizzen appears extremely stiff and pistol is likely an extremely well-done reconversion to flint. Bore is fair. With only 400 manufactured, these 1817 flintlock pistols are one of the largest and most handsome of all United States martial flintlocks. (A) A VERY SCARCE AND DESIRABLE OWEN AND EDWARD EVANS, EVANSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA 1808 CONTRACT PISTOL.

Though Flayderman warns that one must extremely cautious in acquiring one of these rare pistols, as many have been made from 1809 French examples, this appears to be an original specimen. The lock is properly marked EVANS just forward of the double neck hammer. Most importantly, the barrel has a clear P proof on left. CONDITION: The round barrel with even age has medium pitting throughout. The lock has medium pitting but clear EVANS marking. Hammer and frizzen appear to be the original. Top jaw and screw are an old replacement. Brass furniture with good color and only minor marks. Hammer retains an old lead wrap flint, possibly period. The side plate screws are heavily pitted. Walnut three-quarter stock shows considerable wear to left side, old repaired crack towards butt. No visible inspector's cartouche on wood. Ramrod is a very old replacement. This ultra-rare flintlock appears to be original flint. Action is good. Bore is surprisingly good considering external condition of metalwork. The stock shows no visible inspectors' marks. Small chunk missing from forend just behind stirrup rammer. Otherwise, stock has old coat of varnish. Action with very strong mainspring. Bore is good. A most unusual US martial flintlock pistol with characteristic of both 1819 and 1826 models, though the bore diameter is much larger than either standard issue flintlock pistol. Of standard configuration throughout. Barrel with clearly visible naval anchor, US over WN P, WN probably being a naval inspector. Lock and barrel both dated 1851. CONDITION: Stock with coat of old varnish and what appear to be ship's rack numbers rather than the usual inspectors' marks on the side. Barrel with crisp markings and no appreciable pitting. Lock is dark brown with minor marks. Stock is worn. Brass mounts show minor wear. Action is crisp. Bore is good. We believe this to be an original naval marked specimen. Revolver has standard 4" octagon barrel with New York barrel address, blue and case color finish with nickel plated trigger guard and backstrap with varnished one piece walnut grips. CONDITION: All legends are sharp and the stage coach cylinder scene is still sharp. There are still some flashes of blue on protected area of barrel but metal is basically a soft patina having never been cleaned or polished. The grips are excellent and retain the majority of their varnish. The straps retains 90% of their original factory nickel finish. Cylinder advances correctly. The rifling is sharp. The wooden case is period with maroon lining that has faded almost brown. The brass two cavity mold is marked Colt. All of the Colt color case-hardened finish is present on the receiver with rich blue on the cylinder and barrel with etched fight scene. The walnut grips are unchecked and in magnificent condition with a cartouche stamped on the lower edge.
