(A) ITALIAN FLINTLOCK HORSE PISTOL MARKED ON BARREL PIETRO MUTTI.

Lot # 2001 (Sale Order: 1 of 551)      

Long 14 - 1/2" barrel largely smooth with flattened band at breech for inlaid "PIETRO MVTTI" and floral decorations. Waterproof pam with simple line engraving, lock with florals, and filed cock with florals and geometric bordering. Wooden stock of full length with vacant ramrod channel that has a single reinforced ferrule and brass band reinforcement at muzzle. Carved stock with florals. Brass trigger guard with urn finials on both ends with faceted edges at transitions and engraved with florals. Brass buttcap with stirrups deocrated en suite. Brass thumbpiece depicting a silhouette with floral framing. Single piece brass sideplate with mounting hole for belt hook. CONDITION: Good. Metal is essentially a gunmetal grey throughout with brass a deep mustard. Ramrod ferrules are loose and need attention, excercise caution to avoid damage. Stock is good as sanded and refreshed with bumps and bruises throughout and some small cracks. Buttcap has some chipping to wood and is somewhat loose. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is very good with smooth oxidation throughout. Lot consists of: (A) French-made flintlock smoothbore pistol made in Charleville, France. This scarce Model 1763 flint pistol is marked "Libreville" instead of Charleville, which indicates it was made during the French Revolution when Charleville was renamed "Libreville". Smoothbore round barrel with large 2-band iron nosepiece. Original flintlock marked "Mve" "Rle" "Libreville". Walnut stock with iron furniture with "A" marked inside trigger guard. CONDITION: Overall good with metal turning a silvery patina. Wood has oil-soaked appearance with small crack near trigger guard and what looks to be filler around sideplate. Dark bore full of cosmoline. Good mechanics. Missing ramrod. (B) Rare French Cavalry pistol made in Brescia, Italy in 1807. Round, smoothbore barrel with tang dated 1807 and Italian and French proofs. Original flintlock with brass pan marked "Mve Rle De Brescia" Walnut stock with brass hardware with "II7" stamped on left side. CONDITION: Overall good with metal showing some pitting. William Parker is recorded as working at 233 High Holborn circa 1794 through 1841. Blunderbuss pistol measuring approximately 1" across the bell. Manufactured without sights. Octagonal barrel with turnings to smooth flaring at the barrel with turned cannon muzzle. Action signed with W. Parker and Holborn address in stands of arms. Birmingham proofmarks. Slabside walnut grip. English push on safety at tang. Ramrod, possibly the original, mounted in dual ferrules. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel possibly polished long ago as Birmingham proofs are soft. Action engraving crisp. Slabside grip is very good with a few pressure marks and bruises acquired over a lifetime. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand. Twigg is recorded as working between 1755 and 1792 and is highly regarded as one of the foremost gun makers of his time. These turnbarrel boxlock pistols are in identical configuration with turn off screw barrels, boxlock actions, simple line engraved hammers, English push on safeties. Right sides of actions with "Twigg" in a playful reserve and arrows at four corners, left sides with "London" and arrows at four corners. London proofs on underside of barrels. Slabside walnut grips. Trigger guards with single floral. Housed in a contemporary walnut case with blue lining with a J. Burch trade label in lid and accessories comprising Sykes bag flask, bullet mold with sprue cutter. CONDITION: Brass retains a pleasing patina with a few deeper bumps and bruises throughout. Grips are very good with a few bumps and bruises. Accessories are very good, flask with no seam separation and a few pings; spring with oxidation. Bullet mold essentially gunmetal grey. Trade label heavily foxed and stained. Buttcap with stirrups engraved with florals and geometrics. Cast and chased sideplate. Ramrods are a well executed facsimile and are part of the stock. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels have been heavily rebrowned, with engraving on one pistol heavily obfuscated. Stock carving is strong, one pistol has 2 small tight cracks in the wood. Brass tipped ramrod retained by reinforced ferrule decorated with silver. Brass wire inlaid throughout in geometric and floral patterns. Lock with water proof pan, roller bearing frizzen, and swan necked cock engraved with florals. Wrist extensively inlaid with silver with laurels and stands of arms. Buttcap with stirrups cast and chased with stands of arms. Sideplate with florals and geometrics. CONDITION: Good as carefully preserved. This gun is a reconversion from percussion. Appears to have been altered with a "drum" style bolster which was removed, a plug inserted into the hole and a touch hole drilled into the plug. Some of the lock parts are reproductions. "US/ JH/ P" marked on the barrel. Lock his well marked with standard Johnson markings and an 1837 date. Cartouches on stock are present but hard to see. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina with light surface rust and minor pitting. Markings are good. Stock has numerous glued breaks and repairs but is solid. There is a piece of wood missing from the top rear of the lock cavity. Hammer will not hold at full cock, but does hold at half cock. Bore has pitting. Lot of 2: (A) U.S. Model 1836 Martial pistol made by R. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut still in original flintlock condition with 1842 dated lock. 8 - 1/2" round barrel in .54 caliber with 1 piece plain walnut stock. "WAT" oval cartouche on left side of stock denoting inspection by William Anderson Thornton who inspected U.S. Martial arms from 1840-1861 with "JCB" sub inspector marking. CONDITION: Very good, with metal parts bright with moderate wear and moderate to heavy pitting throughout. Stock and cartouche are excellent and strong. Action works correctly and locks tightly. Bore is bright and excellent. (B) U.S. Model 1836 Martial pistol made by A. Waters of Milbury, Mass. that was restored to flintlock likely by a professional. 8 - 1/2" round barrel in .54 caliber with 1 piece walnut stock. Cartouches on left side are faint and indistinct. CONDITION: Good, with metal parts turned to a brown patina with moderate to heavy pitting overall. Stock is very good as lightly sanded. Action shows significant wear but appears to work correctly. Large 9" octagonal barrel with hooked patent breech and inlaid in gold on top strap "ADAMS LONDON". Horn tipped ramrod retained by single reinforced ferrule. Brass tipped ramrod. Silver forearm tip. Single set trigger with trigger guard engraved with a stand of arms. Trigger guard with pineapple finial. Tang engraved en suite. Lock signed "J & B / PARSONS" with fenced waterproof gold lined pan, roller bearing frizzen, English push on safety, and simply filed swan neck cock. Touch hole with silver bushing. Cock and lock engraved with florals and floral lined border. Bag grip with checkering at wrist. Vacant silver escutcheon thumbpiece. CONDITION: Good. metal has been cleaned in the European fashion over some old oxidation. One reinforcing ramrod ferrule chipped at mouth. Stock had a significant split at left side running from rear of barrel down to trigger guard before coming back up on right side to barrel that was repaired with old wood glue and now appears stable. Breech deeply stamped with three sets of triple fleur de lis, a Crown over an R, and a gold filled "FACR / DI / NAP". Stockel does not offer a maker name that uses this touchmark. Lock has same Crown over R and "A.P" roughly incised on interior. No provision for sights. Pistol was converted to percussion at one point, but drum was filled and redrilled with a new touchhole. Simple ramrod that feeds into a beaded mouth. Simple brass strap delineates wooden stock from horn nosecap. Simple brass furniture with curled tail trigger. CONDITION: Good. Metal has acquired a smooth patina throughout. Brass is a pleasing mustard color. Wood is very good with some handling marks and what appears to be an extra layer of protected varnish applied. One crack at ramrod mouth that appears stable and one split at wrist that runs completely through and was repaired. Horn with some insect damage. Action works appropriately, bore is good. Research into the markings should prove fruitful. (B) Prussian 1850 Cavalry pistol as made by Valentin Christian Schilling at Suhl and dated 1871 over the breech. Characteristic cannon muzzle, nipple protector, and brass furniture with ergonomic trigger guard. Simple notch and blade sights, breech with appropriate Crown proof and serial number, 1164. Lock marked "(Crown) / Suhl / V.C.S". CONDITION: Very good. Metal has acquired a nice chocolate patina with some oil staining to yellow visible in protected areas. Brass is starting to tone. Cock is an incorrect replacement that lacks the correct geometry to strike nipple. Stock is good with some marks throughout and some chipping around lock (including one rather large chip at rear), and along front strap of grip. Cock will not hold, may be an issue due to replacement, action otherwise works appropriately. Bore is very good with some oxidation throughout. The only difference is pistol shown is stamped "M" for Maryland. This example either was not stamped "M" on the barrel or it has been worn away. According to the book, 510 pistols were delivered to Maryland under these contracts. The round barrel is stamped "P" in a suken oval cartouche on top of the breech. The flat lockplate has beveled edges and is stamped "H. DERINGER / PHILADA" in the center. Brass standard 1813 style furniture including a semi-stirrup pommel cap. Stocked in plain walnut, wooden ramrod is probably a period replacement. CONDITION: Barrel has been polished bright and shows scattered denting and pitting, proofmark is faint. This pistol is features a brass barrel with Birmingham English proofs and the top of the barrel engraved "NEW - YORK" in block letters. The lock has a rounded tail and is stamped "H. YOUNG / & Co." in the center, features a roller frizzen. Lock is retained by a single screw with a small brass washer. Brass furniture includes a pommel cap and an engraved triggerguard. Plain walnut stock. Complete with its original wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Brass barrel retains a pleasing dark mustard patina. Lock retains a spotted brown patina and has excellent markings and functions well, cock is a contemporary replacement. (A) PRIMITIVE AMERICAN FLINTLOCK PISTOL SIGNED C. KLINE.

Lot # 2023 (Sale Order: 23 of 551)      

Last quarter of the 18th century. The thick walled round barrel is tapered and has a narrow top flat. The flat, hand-forged lock has a detached pan and the frizzen has been sleeved. The center is deeply stamped in block letters "C. KLINE". All of the brass furniture is primitive and is hand filed, including the brass pommel cap and trigger guard with a crude acorn finial. Stocked in plain walnut and complete with a replaced wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown finish with some freckling at breech. Lock appears to be in its original flintlock configuration and functions properly, markings excellent. Brass retains a pleasing dark mustard patina. Stock very good showing some hairline age cracks, minor chipping, and scattered marks from use. A very nice and large primitive American made pistol. (A) EXTREMELY RARE FLINTLOCK NAVAL CONTRACT BOARDING PISTOL BY J. HENRY.

For a nearly an identical example, see No. 89 on pages 188-189 of "Historic Pistols" by Smith and Bitter. The book states that very few of these pistols are known to exist and that they were made during the War of 1812 in Philadelphia on a small order of perhaps twenty pistols. The round iron barrel is stamped with a sunken "P" in an oval cartouche on the left side of the breech. The flat lockplate has beveled edges and a stepped-tail, stamped "J. HENRY" in the center. Brass furniture includes military-style semi-stirrup pommel cap, rounded trigger guard, and "S"-shaped flat brass sideplate with an iron belt hook. Stocked in plain walnut and complete with its original wooden ramrod with slotted iron tip. CONDITION: Barrel has been cleaned and retains a light grey surface with scattered pitting, markings are very good. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and functions well, some scattered pitting and very good markings. Brass retains a mustard patina with scattered marks from use. Iron belt hook shows scattered pitting and is original. Stock shows scattered marks from use and bruising, 1 minor sliver replaced along barrel, above lock tang.
