Sumter Telephone Mfg. Co. Split Shaft Desk Set.

Lot # 741 (Sale Order: 41 of 714)

This is another slightly different Sumter split shaft model. It has a larger, unmarked transmitter and a very rare Sumter receiver with the unique ridge around the middle. If you remove the two screws on the top ring (just below transmitter) the shaft will split into two pieces. The patent on this desk stand includes the design for three different versions. Its purpose was to provide the portable telephone with a casing surrounding the central core and enclosing the switching apparatus which could be moved to expose the switches without interfering with the working parts. The preferred design was the split shaft. Size 11 - 1/4" T.

1915 Custom "Roycroft" Desk Set.

Lot # 742 (Sale Order: 42 of 714)

This is a beautiful Western Electric candlestick modified in 1915 under the direction of Elbert Hubbard, American philosopher, writer and entrepreneur at his Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, New York. Reports from personnel of the Roycroft Campus indicated that the number of phones that were modified like this one, were extremely small in number and were not intended for distribution beyond the confines of the Campus. These special phones included the trademarked Roycroft hammered solid copper base with the Roycroft logo displayed prominently. Matching copper Western Electric pony receiver and copper painted mouthpiece. Extremely rare. Size 12" T.

Western Electric 1904 No. 30-A Peg Dialer Phone.

Lot # 743 (Sale Order: 43 of 714)

Includes original switching system. Extremely rare Western Electric No. 30-A 100 station peg dialer. This was introduced in Queens, New York in 1902 and then about 40 other systems in small communities in the northeast. This small switching system exchange was Bell's answer to a dialing system, but it was only temporary. Most of the systems had to be discontinued when they outgrew the maximum connectible size of the system (100 lines). These were produced by Western Electric between 1902 and 1904. Bell discontinued the Queens system after 1904. It wasn't until 1916 that Bell bought all the automatic dial patents from Automatic Electric Company and then introduced a real dial telephone in 1919. Pictures also show the original switching apparatus. It has a glass cover, like a Pyrex dish. Very complex switching system and one picture of the elaborate wiring underneath. This is a museum quality telephone & switching system combination that has historical significance in the earliest days of the telephone. The telephone is rare enough but you may never find another original switching system. Condition (Very Good). Size 13 - 1/2" T.

Phoenix Interior Telephone Co. Pencil Shaft.

Lot # 744 (Sale Order: 44 of 714)

The catalog says "When you have a Sutton Patented Granular Carbon Transmitter, you have the 'Standard of Merit'. Guaranteed to give satisfaction in every case or money refunded. Sensitive and powerful for long or short distances; will not pack or change its adjustment." This candlestick has a marked transmitter (trademark logo), steer horn switch hook with an outside terminal long pole receiver. The scans are from an original Phoenix advertisement and an actual Phoenix catalog. The catalog image shows a "rope shaft" (left side page) that is very similar to this straight shaft candlestick. Size 12 - 1/2" T.

1894 No. 1 Speaking Tube Desk Set.

Lot # 748 (Sale Order: 48 of 714)

Western Electric No. 1 Speaking Tube Desk Telephone. Alexander Graham Bell’s first upright desk top telephone model. Equipped with the earliest form hard rubber marked transmitter face designed specifically for Speaking Tube use and a Code No. 129 unipolar low resistance watch case receiver with matching serial numbers. Telescoping shaft allows the user to adjust the transmitter height for ease of use. Speaking tubes were described in the Western Electric product catalog as Factory, Special or Interior telephones and advertised to provide excellent service, be neat in appearance and require little attention. This desk set was probably introduced between 1893 - 1894. It uses Western Electric’s larger, second generation potbelly base. The wider base was an improvement over the original narrow potbelly base. Fantastic, original condition and one of the rarest telephones in the collection. Size 13" T.

1903 Automatic Electric Co. Strowger Set.

Lot # 749 (Sale Order: 49 of 714)

Extremely rare, this is considered one of the first desk telephones manufactured by Automatic Electric Company. In 1903 the Strowger dial was redesigned to conform to a desk instrument. The finger wheel was designed with the sun's rays emanating from the center of the dial and that's where it got the name "sunburst" dial. The forked spear hook has rounded bulbous ends, not seen on the earlier wall instruments. The transmitter face plate and cup are of the earlier small diameter, plain, without markings. This 1903 telephone is taller , has a smaller domed base without a button, a skinny perch and outside wire leading to the transmitter. The scans are from an original ad and article between 1902 and 1904. The back plate is a reproduction but an exact match and the rest of the phone is original, including the base plate and the rest under the base. Size 12" T.

1900 Garl Electric Company Desk Set.

Lot # 750 (Sale Order: 50 of 714)

The very best thing about this unusual telephone (besides the fact that it is in remarkable condition) is the original advertisement that shows this exact telephone. It isn't likely that anyone today would remember or have any idea that this telephone existed, but if you will look at the ad first, you will see just how special and how rare this telephone is. It is a Garl Electric Company six-point intercommunicating desk set. This system accommodates connections between any two telephones and any numbers of pairs of telephones on the same system and allows them to converse simultaneously without interference. The transmitter is a granular carbon solid back, and the receiver is a unique double pole outside terminal receiver. All contacts and springs are made of German silver. Please see the scan of an original ad for this exact telephone from a publication back in 1900. Original coil and wires are in the base, everything is there except the inside of the transmitter is empty. You would never know it without opening it up. Size 12" T.
