Rear of backstrap is inscribed to Major Frederick Hardy, 84th Regiment. Hardy was born in Cork on Christmas Day 1830. At the age of 14, he was given a nomination for a commission in the Army, but was not actually given a commission until November 23, 1849, when he was gazetted to an ensigncy in the 84th Regiment in India. While in India, he saw action during the 1857-1859 Indian Rebellion where he was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1857, and was awarded the Mutiny Medal for his service, with two clasps: "Lucknow" and the "Relief of Lucknow". The 84th would return home to the UK in 1859, but before leaving, a General Order was issued thanking the 84th for their services during the campaign and ordered a salute be fired when the unit embarked on their journey home. Upon their return home, every officer, non-commissioned officer, and man was presented with a pen knife by the Cutlers Company. Captain Hardy was appointed Aide De Camp to Brigadier General Russell of the 3rd Infantry Brigade at Aldershot in May 1860. In November 1864 he obtained the rank of Major by purchase and rejoined the 84th. In May 1869 he was promoted by purchase to Lieutenant Colonel, and was promoted to Brevet Colonel in May 1874. Colonel Hardy left the 84th in December 1877 to take command of and organize the 51st and 65th Regimental Depot. In 1882 he retired on half pay. In April 1885 he was promoted to the rank of Major General, even though, due to family commitments, he was unable to accept the command he was offered. On June 28th, 1907, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), which is second only to knighthood. This Colt 1851 Navy is complete with Colt partitioned wood case with factory green velvet interior. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining nearly all of its period finish, with the exception of small areas of gold and silver inlay missing and minor handling marks. Grips show no major cracks. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright with sharp rifling, possibly unfired. Case is very good, with some scattered minor age related splits near hinges and laminate joints. A very interesting and attractive Colt 1851 Navy inscribed to a well-respected British officer. (C) WINCHESTER DELUXED MODEL 1892 TD WITH SCOPE AND FACTORY THREADED BARREL.

Lot # 2265 (Sale Order: 179 of 517)

Manufactured in 1908. This deluxe features a full octagon barrel, take down, half magazine, German silver tip front sight, semi buckhorn rear sight and sports a period unmarked 3/4" tube scope with Malcom type adjustable mounts. The deluxe stock features a hand cut checkered pistol grip with Winchester cap, butt plate and matching forearm. There is a letter from Cody stating that the magazine was shortened as the Maxim silencer would not fit with a full magazine, thus the half mag with the tube hanger cut still present. Both the barrel and receiver have the PW proof with the two line Winchester barrel legend on top. They surmise that the gun was returned to factory to fit for Maxim. They also surmise that scope was probably installed by factory. Of course, none of this is documented. The gun has been restored. CONDITION: Excellent as restored showing light handling only with some light stock dings and impressions. The checkering is sharp, the grain is brilliant and exhibits the piano type finish. Bore is bright. The standard cross hair reticle is clear. Any competent gunsmith could add a near full length tube to allow for the Maxim, install a tube hanger and you would not have to fill the hanger cut or refinish. Cool gun and any deluxe 92 is scarce. Barrel Length: 24" Caliber/Bore: .25-20 WCF FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1892 Paperwork: Information Serial Number: 419600

(A) FINE RIGBY CUSTOM WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 LEVER ACTION SHORT RIFLE.

Lot # 2267 (Sale Order: 181 of 517)

The Model 1876 was chambered for the largest calibers available in a lever action rifle in 1879 when this rifle was made. British officers stationed in India at that time found the 1876 to be the perfect weapon for Tigers and many were purchased for that purpose. Given the amount of surviving British proofed 1876 Models, the short round barrel rifles with short magazines seemed to be the preferred style. The big .50 was introduced in 1879 but up to that point, the 45-75 was the beefiest cartridge available. Research states this rifle left the factory on December 31, 1879 as a standard round rifle. It was obviously shipped to John Rigby of London where it was altered to a 22" barrel with a scarce 2/3 magazine which enabled the hunter two extra rounds. The left side plate is engraved " J. RIGBY & CO 72 ST. JAMES'S ST. LONDON" The frame and barrel bear British proofs. A three leaf folding express sight was added with standard dove tail front sight. As was customary with the Brits, it appears is was finished by them at time of alterations as there is blue over the engraving. The frame exhibits a mirror bright high polish finish. The stocks are standard walnut with a trap door rifle butt plate. Top of barrel retains the crisp two line Winchester legend. CONDITION. Excellent. Frame retains at least 85% bright blue. The thumb print dust cover is grey patina and appears as if the finish flaked off due to finishing process. The loading gate still retains majority of the peacock nitre blue. The barrel and tube retain at least 80% blue with scattered handling marks, some patina bleeding through and thinning. The hammer and trigger still retain generous case colors. The stocks are proud to metal, solid, with scattered dings and abrasions. Action is fine. Bore is well defined. A great example of a British empire Tiger rifle. Barrel Length: 22" Caliber/Bore: .45-75 WCF FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1876 Paperwork: Factory Research Serial Number: 6530

(A) A HISTORIC WINCHESTER 1873 .44-40 LEVER ACTION RIFLE USED BY CHIEF RAIN IN THE FACE, WITH OUTSTA

Lot # 2271 (Sale Order: 185 of 517)

Chief Rain-in-the-Face, born Ite Omagazu, apocryphally earned his name after a fight with a Cheyenne boy where the blood looked like rain on his face. Chief Rain-in-the-Face first fought against the whites in the summer of 1866 when he participated in a raid against Fort Totten in what is now North Dakota, and in December 1866, he participated in the Fetterman Massacre near Fort Phil Kearny in present-day Wyoming. His first encounter with George Custer came during the Black Hills War, when he killed Dr. John Honsinger, Augustus Baliran, and Private John Ball, all of whom were attached to the 7th Cavalry as the senior veterinarian, sutler, and private, respectively. Rain-in-the-Face returned to the Standing Rock Reservation, where he lived until 1873, when a scout named Charley Reynolds visited the Standing Rock Agency and heard Rain-in-the-Face boasting about his participation in the ambush. When Reynolds reported what he had learned, General George Custer ordered Rain-in-the-Face arrested and dispatched his younger brother, Captain Thomas Custer, to take him into custody. Thomas Custer took Rain-in-the-Face to Fort Abraham Lincoln and incarcerated him; during this time, Rain-in-the-Face legendarily told Thomas Custer that he would kill him and eat his heart. Three months later, Rain-in-the-Face escaped and returned to the reservation, then fled to the Powder River country. In the spring of 1876, he joined Sitting Bull's band and traveled with him to the Little Big Horn River in early June. At Little Big Horn, Rain-in-the-Face allegedly was the one who cut Thomas Custer's heart out of his chest, took a bite, and spat out a piece of the heart, fulfilling his earlier threat, although other accounts indicate that Rain-in-the-Face did little to no fighting, as he was severely crippled by a lifetime of combat. Some contemporary accounts also claimed that the war chief had personally dispatched George Custer as well, but in the confused fighting, a number of similar claims have been attributed to other warriors. Late in his life, in a conversation with writer Charles Eastman, Rain-in-the-Face denied both the killing of George Custer and the mutilation of Tom Custer. After the Battle of Little Big Horn, Rain-in-the-Face joined other Hunkpapa as they fled north into Canada, spending the next several years in exile. He eventually surrendered in 1880 at Fort Keogh, Montana, alongside Spotted Eagle's band, and the following year was transferred to the Standing Rock Agency, Dakota Territory, where he later became a reservation police officer and lived the rest of his life. This rifle belonged to Rain-in-the-Face during his exile, and was likely procured for his own protection, as he and Sitting Bull had a disagreement of some kind, and Rain-in-the-Face went to Spotted Eagle’s camp, where he was tolerated but not welcome. The man who accepted his surrender was Eli L. Huggins, an American Brigadier General who served with distinction during the Indian Wars, earning the Medal of Honor at O’Fallons Creek, Montana, where he “surprised the Indians in their strong position and fought them until dark with great boldness”, per the citation. As he was so well regarded, during the closing of hostilities, Huggins was selected to parlay with Spotted Eagle and try to convince him and his band to return to the United States and settle on government-assigned reservations in exchange for clemency. A poor hunting season and dwindling supplies meant that Spotted Eagle did not reject the offer outright, and took some time to consider the offer, during which Huggins camped near Spotted Eagle, and met Rain-in-the-Face by chance when Rain-in-the-Face returned to camp. Huggins took the opportunity to speak with the Chief and shared with him some of the gifts of hardtack, sugar, and coffee that had been given to Spotted Eagle, as Spotted Eagle had distributed the gifts amongst his people, excluding Rain-in-the-Face. The gesture won Rain-in-the-Face’s confidence, and when the band departed for Fort Keogh, Rain-in-the-Face surrendered this Winchester to Huggins. Click here to see the full description.

(A) AINSWORTH INSPECTED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY CAVALRY REVOLVER.

Lot # 2281 (Sale Order: 195 of 517)

Manufactured in 1874 and is one of the first 8000 Single Action Armies contracted for the U.S. Government. It was inspected by Orville W. Ainsworth. Ainsworth was the first principle sub-inspector for these guns. It has all of the early characteristics: single line barrel address in script, two line patent dates, bullseye ejector rod, single small U.S. cartouche on the left grip, and serial numbered ejector rod housing. Very few had this feature. There is a small A inspection proof on the bottom of the barrel, the side of the cylinder, on the trigger guard under the serial number, on the bottom of the grip and on the top of the backstrap. A U.S. is stamped on the left side of the frame. Matching serial numbers on the barrel, ejector rod housing, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, and the back of the grip. There is a 533 bin number on the loading gate. The screws show very little wear from disassembly. CONDITION: This gun retains some of the original factory-applied blue finish in the protected areas, with the remainder of the gun turning a pleasing gray/brown patina. There are some traces of the case color on the frame and hammer. The grip shows some honest wear and fits the gun very well. The bore is good with well defined lands and grooves. This would be a great addition to any collection. Barrel Length: 7 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Serial Number: 4252

CORRECTION: Ejector rod housing, screws, and the loading gate are replacements. Grips are repaired; they appear to have been separated at one point and reglued.
